Curious to see how FS1 and the game broadcasters deal with the ugliness that might ensue. Will be very hard to ignore the sounds coming from the bleachers. For the most part, FS1 and the media have been treating Patrick Ewing exceedingly generously. I get it. Patrick is a basketball giant, most of these announcers and play-by-pay guys are old enough to remember Patrick in the NBA (or, in some instances played with or against him). And, I know oftentimes these guys talk to the coaches in advance. But, the announcers and commentators have been carrying significant water for Patrick Ewing and our program. Not a broadcast goes by where the COVID pause is brought up, and that's fair. Far worse are when guys like Dickie Simpkins, Pete Gillen, or Donnie Marshall tout Patrick as being a great coach. Or, how about Gillen asking what big guy wouldn't want to learn from Pat. Hmm. Maybe Wahab? That oft-used line from years past doesn't work anymore. And, how about the play-by-play guy who, last night (don't recall his name), said that Patrick wanted to get the team back to the glory days of when Patrick was playing, and Ewing was close to doing so. What? I realize these guys often worship/admire Ewing, and that's fine, but the level of commentary is largely detached from reality. To some extent I get it, especially on FS1. It's their job to tout the conference. I am sure when DePaul was awful all those years, the commentators didn't dump on them either, though I highly doubt the commentators sucked up to Dave Leitao. It's notable that when FS1 put up a graphic about "Head Coach" Patrick Ewing, there were 4 bullet points. One was the BET win last year. The other 3 were about him being in the NBA Hall of Fame, and his performance as a player. So, in short, I fully expect this treatment to continue. [The undercurrent I do not mention above, is that many of these commentators only know the team at a surface level, which also leads to erroneous commentary. But this is prevalent throughout sports media unless you get the top-notch commentators or play-by-play guys, and that's not happening at 8:30 pm on a Tuesday night.]

I'm sure alumni like the doofus with the Hire Pitino sign at last night's game will increasingly behave poorly at home games if the Hoyas keep losing. Ultimately the 18 to 22 year old young men on the team will hear the criticism more clearly than Ewing -- he's a former Knick for goodness sake. Barring a turnaround, it's inevitably going to get worse ... but hopefully Thursday night will be a respite from the overall season and a welcome McDonough memory. We don't have a lot of fans to begin with - you can disagree with the fans, but that doesn't make them not fans. Feel like "Hire Pitino", which is an implicit statement on the coach rather than an explicit statement is going to be quaint compared to what history (2004, 2017) says is coming in a week or two if this continues.

Curious to see what student turnout is for this game. Are we sure it’s going to be packed, especially after PE Jr.’s comments? The Thompson’s Towel fellows seem to have taken it personally. Not saying they speak for everyone but it is a window into how some of the students feel about this.
If it’s a bad showing at the game…that would speak volumes. Are boos out of the question if the game goes poorly? (Not advocating for them at all, just wondering)

I just feel sorry for the players. They must be getting very frustrated now. They need a win to pick them up. So Go Hoyas!!!

I'm guessing it will be a great crowd -- much better than bitter old men like myself who are re-living their glory days. There's definitely a core of students -- including the band -- that are generally providing positive cheering at the games. To someone else's point above, this is also a great college experience for students to pack McDonough and go crazy. I don't know too many current students who are huge basketball fans. There might be one or two on here, but the griping -- again including from me - generally comes from alumni. St. John's did crush Seton Hall in a rare on campus game in Walsh Gymnasium on January 24th similarly in front of 1,360 enthused Seton Hall students. I'm sure that most of those students will remember fondly the game on campus -- even if their team ended up on the wrong side of winning. Good points. I wonder though if it bodes better for the basketball program to have students supporting Ewing tomorrow night or booing him? Right now what is the best way to turn this program around? I'm not saying that students should pack the place and boo Ewing from the start of the game. Of course they should be cheering the team on. But if we are clearly being outplayed mid way through the second half and are down 15-20 is passively sitting there or just leaving early sending the right signal to Ewing and most importantly the GU administration? To me it says to the administration that the students aren't passionate about GU basketball and we can just accept losing seasons into the future. Whereas students reacting to a debacle on the court tomorrow night by booing would tell the GU administration to consider making major changes to the basketball program. I kind of hope that Coach Ewing's future doesn't impact the cheering for the Hoyas tomorrow night ... in any direction. Georgetown underclassmen are generally not as emotionally invested in the team and program as alumni and longtime fans. It's not like any current students know what's its like to root for a great Hoya team during their school experience. I'm hoping tomorrow is a competitive game and the focus is on the court -- and for our players. The boo birds will be there on Sunday for the Providence game ... it will be a nice outlier to have a sold out game full of positive cheering students.

We lost to SJU by 19 pts and only because in the second half Anderson had his playmakers keep the ball around mid-court until the last 10 seconds of the shot clock. A team that flies around the court was holding the ball in the half-court. We weren’t pressuring the ballhander or fouling. So, basically, Anderson took pity on Pat. Maybe Pat didn’t notice and thought we were in the game until late in the second half…

Are boos out of the question if the game goes poorly? (Not advocating for them at all, just wondering) Do we think that most students are aware of or care what Patrick Ewing Jr says? I'm guessing not. Also, I understand that student season ticketholders were given priority and that all of the tickets have been distributed. Remember: this is a college basketball game with college athletes. All of the attendees at the game are going to be the players' college classmates. Why in the world would Georgetown students boo their classmates? This is Hoyatalk and this is a place where we can all act like experts on all things Hoya basketball -- we are among our fellow fanatics. I'm not too old to remember going to games as a freshman and just having a great time with my friends. Let's hope that it's a great atmosphere and that the electricity in the air propels a hot shooting night. I will be the first curmudgeon to rule out the likelihood/feasibility of an on-campus arena, but let's enjoy it for one night.

(Not advocating for them at all, just wondering) I'd guess most students aren't aware of Ewing Jr. or his comments on fans, and a high percentage of those that are aware didn't think twice about it. I would expect a big student turnout. It's a pretty quiet time of the academic calendar, it's very easy to get to, and unfortunately a mass indoor gathering on campus has some novelty for the current students.

Another chance to slay the dragon! Flip that script! The fellas just have to keep plugging away, there has been steady growth individually and team-wise these last few weeks, they just have...to...close...one...out...
How great was it to see Dante's performance last night? That level of play from Dante is absolutely essential for this team to get to where it's going.
I would very much like to see more O from Don early, Collin snap out of his funk, and more post possessions for Tim and Ryan. Just cuz, you know? They need to touch it down low to grow. Those two could be a problem for folks real soon.
I'm gonna try and masquerade as a student and get in tomorrow night! Gonna be a hoot!
LETS GO HOYAS!!!!!

It was a slight improvement but he still has a long way to go

It was a slight improvement but he still has a long way to go Five assists, one turnover works, as does a couple of nice moves to the basket. No way he should be leading the team in FG attempts, however. We were done in last night by a couple of very long stretches with little or no points, but I blame that on the scheme, not necessarily Dante. We cannot not go five minutes without a basket.

FWIW, my son (a freshman) will be there. He has season tix and is excited to no have to schlep down to the Cap Arena. He told me he and his friends are going early to get in line so they're sure to get in. He's not a huge sports fan, but he loves the Hoyas. He has a few of the players in his classes and talks about them, how they're really nice and funny. Bottom line -- he cares about the team and wants them to win, of course. He also resists badmouthing the team and coaches, and when I am down about the team, his usual response is "We'll get 'em next game!" He knows most of the history (from his old alum dad) and about the glory days. He was hoarse from screaming at the Syracuse game and got a little taste of what's possible, at least in his mind. I don't see him and his friends booing Ewing and certainly not the players -- they're his classmates and dorm mates and he knows how hard they're trying.
He will be screaming for the team to beat St. John's big time. When I told him they used to be the Redmen, then the Red Storm, and now we're seeing and hearing more & more the Johnnies (?!?). He's totally amused by that, and by the old chant from opposing crowds, "What the hell's a Hoya!"
Hoping and then hoping some more for 40 solid minutes from our boys and our first conference 'W'. Let's go Hoyas!

This game will either take some pressure off this pending implosion in a win (probably take more pressure off than what’s fair but I digress) or could be the silver bullet that finishes things if it is another turnover heavy performance, I hope beard and Ryan play more and hopefully we get the win because this is as much of a “home” game as it gets

For me, tonight isn't about what we think about the coaching staff, and one win wouldn't change my long term view. Tonight is all about the players. Despite whatever we think about their performance, they're 100% giving it their all out there and they deserve a win. I'm hopeful we have a real home court advantage, a loud, fun atmosphere and a rare opportunity to show what an on campus arena could feel like and how drastic that environment would be from our current situation.

GAMEDAY!!!
Agree with others that SJU presents a matchup problem for us. We will need to up our intensity and try to outhustle one of the more intense teams in the conference. We can't let them get a lead because the press won't be as effective as this team. I liked out effort against SHU, we almost ran an offense at times, and we shared the ball. Do that today and we have a chance. Running out of chances to win one without a miracle steal so if we can some how overcome SJU's athlete's tonight, it may help.
Congratulations to the students on having a BE game in McD. I expect the atmosphere to be rocking and everyone in on the party. This is your time to shine and show the naysayers that the students still support their classmates no matter what happens on the court.
GO HOYAS! Beat down Johnny Thunderbird!!!

Fond memories of McDonough: proud member of the "Animal Section" in 69-70 -the NIT team. Charley Adrian, Artie White and Mike Laughna could play on any Hoya team IMHO, though Artie was a bit of a head case. We did pack that place and it did rock!
Edit: Apologies, and thanks for letting this geezer take a trip down memory lane...

No, but he was very much in line with the player we saw at the end of last year. I think fans are suffering from the same desire the players are, to right all wrongs with one drive to the basket or deep three. What we saw from Dante was a simple return to good form. Hopefully he keeps it going tonite, and the others can join in. The guys are inching closer and closer to the breakthrough, tonite is as good a night as any! LETS GO HOYAS!!!
