Maryland trying to get that REAL early jump on finding a coach who is younger and can keep the DC kids. Wouldn't be surprised to see Mike Jones somewhere on that list. Interested to see who else they look at though Jones (Va Tech, not Greensboro) would hopefully be too smart a choice and not a big enough name for UMCP.

www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/32779473/maryland-terrapins-men-basketball-coach-mark-turgeon-steps-10-plus-seasons“He led the Terps to a 226-116 record and five NCAA tournament appearances in the past seven seasons, and he won a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship in 2020… The Terrapins reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season before falling to Alabama to finish 17-14… The school said the decision for Turgeon to step down was a mutual one, and that a national search for a new coach would take place following this season…” Better record than GU during the same period… various tournament appearances… regular season title… If a Thompson or Ewing had that record at GU, some of you would give him a lifetime contract. At Maryland, that record gets you fired. Hopefully seeing something like this so close to home will make the powers that be at Georgetown realize what we’re currently putting up with…

I'm assuming Maryland made the move now to avoid Turgeon pulling another "Turgeon" meaning his teams would suffer some bad losses in November, then turn around and upset 2 or 3 highly ranked Big 10 teams and make the NCAA tournament as a 6 or 7 seed, which would justify him keeping his job!! There's no doubt that Maryland would have done that again this season, and the boosters weren't going to let it happen again.
I agree with MCIGuy and iowa80 about Turgeon being the coach made things easier for Georgetown because Turgeon couldn't recruit local 5-star players and he didn't appear to be a good enough X's and O's coach to have Maryland in the top 10 every year like Gary Williams did for a period of time.

The fans chanted “Fire Turgeon” after they lost to Virginia Tech at home, on national tv, on Len Bias night. That was the final nail. He lost the team. Giving the reigns to Danny Manning for the rest of year would be an interesting experiment. Maybe he can turn things around with this fairly talented group and he becomes the long term plan Is a “Fire Ewing” chant a possibiy at the Cap One empty cavern? As a poster who went to the last game wrote, there were only ushers, security, media, some band members and some cheerleaders, plus about 40 students that went to the Longwood game. Austin Freeman put attendance at 500. If we lose at SC, expect attendance to be even worse for the midweek UMBC game.

Even if we win at SC, don't expect attendance to be much higher. 8:30 tips don't help

Wasn't Terrance Williams local? Of course, his commitment to GU didn't last long.

III didn’t really deserve them either but he wasn’t on Hoya Mt. Rushmore like Pat.

Unfortunately, nothing at GU moves without pressure. Then again, if a fan yells “Fire Ewing” in an empty cavernous Cap One and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Wasn't Terrance Williams local? Of course, his commitment to GU didn't last long. His parents wanted him to go to Georgetown he had no interest in staying near home. He was rather vocal about it after he decommitted. His parents spoke up and said it was their wish for him to stay near home.

The signal I get from this is that Maryland isn't screwing around and intends to go hard for a top-flight guy, no matter what it costs. This only intensifies the pressure on PE to win now, but the product is still in development. Here's hoping.

There's a large contingent of MD fans calling for Rick Pitino.
LOL.

Maybe a Pitino (or other top-notch coach) at Maryland can land some local recruits, make staying local cool again, and we can ride the wave to pick up the second-tier local guys. Really grasping at straws here.

Isn't this Qudus handler who's posting this tweet? Karma. In a nutshell Q got Turgeon fired.

Really grasping at straws here. I don't know about that, but we could count on Pitino to have some local recruits escorted to College Park.
