Potentially not good from a Georgetown perspective. Maryland under Turgeon has been arguably more inept at DMV recruiting lately than Georgetown. A lot of DMV guys are always going to go elsewhere, but at least GU got Pickett and appeared to be putting in more effort locally. Kim English doesn't have a long track record, but may be the worst case scenario for GU given his local recruiting success at Mason. There is no logical target with Terp connections nor are there any hot mid major candidates nationally a la Porter Moser last year.
As far as Wahab, he'll never get as many touches anywhere else at the high major level as he was getting at Georgetown. But it can't get much worse for him with Manning this season or anyone else going forward compared to being benched by Turgeon against mid majors. Unless facing guys like Cockburn and Dickinson in the Big 10 further exposes or demoralizes him. It didn't even take 1 semester to prove what a bad mistake Duval Simmonds made in engineering this transfer.

And that is how big time basketball operates. You mean after 11 years?

Any chaos at UMCP is worth a toast, but I suppose there’s always a chance they find someone better than Turgeon. Can’t have that. This is why I always wanted Turgeon to have enough success to stick around for awhile. Agreed, the best case for us is that Maryland has a coach who focuses his recruiting nationally instead of locally, and who is just good enough to not get fired. Turgeon and staff did pull some solid local players over the years, but he was certainly not the worst case scenario for us. Will be interesting to see where this goes. Meanwhile we have at least one open spot on the roster after King's departure and they have at least a couple players worth a look (and that we recruited previously).

I knew he got a lot of heat from the Maryland fans, but did not realize he was in real jeopardy of losing his job. Danny Manning had a chance as a D1 head coach already, and that did not work out really well for him so he might just be keeping the seat warm for the next coach. Should be interesting to see if any of the current Maryland players transfer before the the end of this semester. Could they play in the second semester of this season? Not sure what the rules now. They have some really talented players and should be a much better team. I guess that is why the fanbase was so upset at him!!!!!

And that is how big time basketball operates. You mean after 11 years? When the writing is on the wall and it's time to go you make the change. It doesn't matter if you made the tournament the previous year or not. It's about how the program should be performing versus how it is.

OK, I'll put my football helmet on for this post. emotions aside, could/would Q consider coming back for the last semester? Has he burned too many bridges?

Thought this would happen during the past offseason. Very surprised by the timing.

UMCP is honoring the entire contract. I'm thinking alumni pressure (and money to fund the contract terms) came down on the Maryland Board of Trustees; they wanted no public spectacle...just "here's your money and don't bother showing up here again."

This is not good. They get a headstart on the coaching search and whoever they get will recruit better and probably be a better coach.
Hope they don't get Ryan Odom.

www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/32779473/maryland-terrapins-men-basketball-coach-mark-turgeon-steps-10-plus-seasons“He led the Terps to a 226-116 record and five NCAA tournament appearances in the past seven seasons, and he won a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship in 2020… The Terrapins reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last season before falling to Alabama to finish 17-14… The school said the decision for Turgeon to step down was a mutual one, and that a national search for a new coach would take place following this season…” Better record than GU during the same period… various tournament appearances… regular season title… If a Thompson or Ewing had that record at GU, some of you would give him a lifetime contract. At Maryland, that record gets you fired.

The fans chanted “Fire Turgeon” after they lost to Virginia Tech at home, on national tv, on Len Bias night. That was the final nail. He lost the team. Giving the reigns to Danny Manning for the rest of year would be an interesting experiment. Maybe he can turn things around with this fairly talented group and he becomes the long term plan
