Guys flex like that because the intimidation no longer exists. Old Hoya teams (or NYK/Detroit Pistons) didn't need to talk. They'd just beat you up and knock you on your butt. The closest thing to "intimidation" these days is the "threat" of being dunked upon which, IMO, is a MUCH bigger deal to players these days than it should be.

Guess I’m an old fuddy duddy. I just don’t like it, but in no way am I attempting to characterize the young man based on those antics. I come from a hockey background where that type of attitude gets you a beating haha.

Being a Hoya fan in Canada, that kind of behavior in hockey will absolutely mean you have to drop the mitts at some point and fight -- probably more than once! That being said, I think Denver is going to be a great player, and his on-court attitude at least reflects that he's confident on the court. I'd still take that over someone who is hesitant or scared to take a big shot.

This is one place where I want to keep some of Big John's approach. Some mad looking Hoyas? Absolutely. A barking and flexing Hoya? I think he would have shut that down in no uncertain terms. Hoya Paranoia loses its intimidation when there's braggin' and boastin'. Gives the opposition something to resent and motivation to up their game. You want them to fear you not think you're all about you jerk. You'd never see Sleepy or Reggie flexin' or barkin'. Bothers the opposition more when you act like you've been doin' it all your life. Let's let our hard-nosed play speak for us. We can bark & flex in the locker room or on the bus. bg79 everyone talks crap on the court in their own way. I guarantee you that Sleepy and Reggie let the opponent know that they were giving them the bizness. Some people are in your face and some people say little slick comments. As the opponent you hate it either way. Zeke - absolutely. Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but trash talking has been around forever and is effective at getting under your opponent's skin, but since it's usually under the radar or in a close encounter, it doesn't show somebody up in front of thousands of people and maybe light a fire under them as a result. The way MJ and Bird used to jab was part of the game and maybe achieved the same thing as flexing and barking but kept it on the court (most of the time). Maybe I'm wrong, don't know. I also come at it as a parent of kids who play sports. When they talk about players flexing and barking (pounding their chest, on field celebrating during the game, etc.), they want to play harder and shut the guy up. So I've always preached that they act like a great play is normal for them, like they've been doing it forever. To me, that gets to me more than them screaming it at me or my team.

I agree with this personally (realizing it's not for everyone) but that is how I approached sports as an athlete and encourage my son to do so...the Barry Sanders approach where after a TD he just handed the ball over to the ref..."act like you have been there before".

I personally use to give it both ways when I played pickup games. I don't really care how you talk junk to me as long as you can take what you give......

Never step over a player or stare at your opponent. No need - just let your game speak for you. Never understood trash talking - what's the benefit. I recall Pat Riley leveling fines to players if they helped a opponent off of the floor. How did this help the Knicks??

Saw a Georgetown game on TV when I was 9 when Iverson was a Hoya --- immediately hooked, and have been since.

We I was in my youth (46 now) I discovered the 70/30 rule of talking crap on the court. Not exact but about 70% of players you can talk them off their best play. About 30% you talk into playing better than normal or they still play well through your chirping. I liked my odds. In my 30s it was more for fun. All of my friends and associates in my adult balling group talked crap on the court to each other.

I lived in Ottawa until a couple of years ago. I moved to the Gulf Islands in BC. I am originally from Georgetown Ontario. Sleepy Floyd playing for a school sharing a name with my hometown grabbed my attention and then a recruit named Patrick Ewing sealed the deal.

And just to add to that as well, I recall the Lakers winning the next four games of that series. Not that the stepover had anything to do with that, the Lakers were just the far better team, and AI couldn't go for 50 every game.
