The Associated Press did not release an updated poll after the completion of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. If it had, I think it’s safe to say that Gonzaga would still be ranked #1, as the Bulldogs’ win streak has now hit 27, entering tonight’s second round game against unranked Oklahoma...make that 28, now, after Gonzaga defeated Oklahoma.
The Pacific 12 Conference still has five teams alive in March Madness, going into today’s games, and has not had a team eliminated at this writing. Conversely, the ACC and Big Ten have both come up very small thus far, although Eastern Lower Canada Community College has, unfortunately, bucked the trend up to now.
Big East Conference (4 bids;2 1 0 still alive): #18 Villanova, #19 Creighton
American Athletic Conference (1 bid; 1 still alive): #6 Houston
Atlantic Coast Conference (7 bids;2 1 0 still alive): #14 Florida State, Syracuse
Big 12 Conference (7 bids;3 1 still alive): ##3 Baylor, #12 Kansas, Oklahoma
Big Ten Conference (9 bids;3 1 still alive): #4 Michigan, #8 Iowa, Maryland
Mid-American Conference (1 bid;1 0 still alive): Ohio
Missouri Valley Conference (2 bids;1 0 still alive): #17 Loyola (Illinois)
Pacific 12 Conference (5 bids;4 still alive): #22 Colorado, #23 Southern California, California Los Angeles, Oregon, Oregon State
Southeastern Conference (6 bids;3 2 1 still alive): #5 Alabama, #10 Arkansas, Louisiana State
Southland Conference (1 bid;1 0 still alive): Abilene Christian
Summit League (1 bid;1 0 still alive): Oral Roberts
West Coast Conference (2 bids; 1 still alive): #1 Gonzaga
Games are being played at Butler University’s Hinkle Fieldhouse, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis’s Indiana Farmers Coliseum, Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil Stadium, all in Indianapolis IN.
Last minute modifications and cancellations may occur, and I will attempt to update this missive whenever I learn of tournament schedule changes; no warranties of accuracy, express or implied, are made.
