So umm...what happened in that players only meeting that Bile referenced in his postgame Provy comments? - So there's really two ways to attack a small team. You can either match them and go small (which I had suggested)...or you just double down on your size. Credit to the coaching staff for that gameplan. We held them to very few offensive rebounds and didn't get punished on the perimeter as a result. Very well done
- Man I just don't quite get Bile. The first half was pretty much a reversion to what we had seen all year, he was 1-5 with 2 points and forcing shots. I mean two of his shots were blocked directly into Tim dunks. And then he morphed into the ultimate glue guy, defensive stud, flying around doing all the little things. It was basically a freshman year LeBlanc redux. He had 4 steals, 3 led directly to layups and would've been 4 but Jefferson grabbed him. And I guess that steal of Bishop was just considered an offensive rebound but that was basically another. If he's going to do those little things, get steals, rebounds, you can live with some forced shots. We forced Creighton to turn the ball over 1 out of every 5 possessions. That was the difference, and while they threw the ball around a little bit, our size affected them and again that was Bile. What an effort
- Blair's development in his ability to read the pick and roll is really impressive. Just some beautiful skip passes, handled the blitz nicely. Some really nice play designs to get guys open looks too.
- We basically forced Creighton to abandon their defensive gameplan and switch every screen. That forced us to go more inside in the 2nd half, and again kudos to the staff for making that adjustment. Even when they tried a zone, Ewing dialed up a play he uses against Cuse to get Bile a nice little bunny in the paint. Everything clicked
- I was waiting for a team to just force Wahab to his right shoulder, and not surprised that came from McDermott. And that led to 2 quick travels from Wahab. But he adjusted and we finally saw a move over his right shoulder to finish with his left hand. Need to do that more consistently to keep teams honest so he can get back to his left shoulder. Baby steps
- It was one of the few shots Pickett missed...but Dante splitting the double team on a pick and roll and hitting the man in the corner for a 3 is the good stuff. Was able to draw some fouls driving to the hoop today as well. Progress
- Here's a simple block / charge rule. If the contact doesn't stop the offensive player from yamming on the defenders face, it's probably not enough contact for a charge. We got the ball right back on a similarly funny Carey "charge" but man Pickett deserved better
- I'll fully admit I was in the find 5 minutes camp, not going to deny it. But if the team is winning, then yea I'll keep my mouth shut on that. Sibley was honestly the most important piece of that so happy he's still in the rotation.
Amazing team win, kudos to everyone involved for continuing the grind
You know we have a pretty big team. Wahab (6-11), jamorko (6-10), Bile (6-7), Jayvon (6-3), and Dante (6-0)....then we bring I Sibley (6-8) to go with Jamorko...Tim (7-0)..he's playing more under control and is massive, and then Don Carey at (6-5) and shares the point with Dante and Jay on. I like it! What do you more observant folks think?

This win felt good! Instead of fretting that they would disintegrate, I was believing they felt confident, and they were. It made my day!

I still wonder what the conversation was in the team-only meeting. Whatever it was, was good!

Anybody else notice Wahab shooting jumpers from 15' instead of only camping under the basket? He's diversifying his game!

I was in bed. This looked like a great win. Hope it’s a sign of meaningful, long-term change. In bed? I hope you weren't sleeping too.

I like it! What do you more observant folks think? For me personally, it's all about what you're sacrificing by having the size advantage compared to what you gain by it. Bigger normally means slower, but Bile and Pickett aren't having any issues keeping up on the perimeter. So basically you're getting the benefits of the inside size advantage without sacrificing too much considering you have to respect their jumpers so there's no spacing issues either. Sure we gave up two pick and roll dunks, but that will happen from time to time. That this lineup forced the most turnovers we've seen is interesting, if that's sustainable you've got something. The other thing that's sticking out is our offensive diversity over the last two games, if that's the right phrase. Against Provy our ppp was 1.12, vs. Creighton it was 1.15 so very similar. But we went about getting there VERY differently. Against Provy, 6-23 from 3 but killed them on boards (41% O-rebounding rate) and didn't turn the ball over. Against Creighton, the turnovers creeped up a little and we only grabbed 25% of O rebounds...but went 10-21 from 3. Not pretending we're some matchup proof behemoth, but having different ways to score definitely helps survive different matchups if you can pivot when something isn't working.

I like it! What do you more observant folks think? I'm neither observant nor smart nor more frequently right than average. But I think the thing with height is the obvious: It's beneficial if you can take advantage of it. It can be an encumbrance if height means you aren't as good in other areas (like quickness; shooting; mobility) and teams can take advantage of that. Jamorko can certainly handle staying with a four on the perimeter; it's when he faces a three that he can struggle. We did an outstanding job early in the game of taking advantage of our height. Creighton (like Nova) tries to front the post and give weakside help to avoid the lob (applying pressure on ball to make the entry difficult). But if you throw the entry pass from the middle, it's really hard for the D to provide help. That's what we did. It's a pretty hard pass to throw accurately and the spacing and timing has to be right. But we obviously had worked hard on it and we executed it really well. So...kudos for using our height effectively. To me, the biggest thing is that Wahab was very infrequently taken advantage of on the perimeter on D. Sure, it happened a few times, but that's OK. We mainly played a drop PNR D (Raftery commented on it). And it mainly worked and avoided lots of rotational issues. Most of their threes came from Dante and others (mainly Dante) over-helping and leaving the corner three open. (Or off offensive boards or transition...again, that's bound to happen some.)

One last coaching point I noticed. Midway through the 1st half we ended up with a lineup on the court without Blair or Pickett. It immediately resulted in a turnover as Harris and Carey failed to execute a dribble hand-off and Creighton got a breakaway the other way. Ewing caught it immediately and called timeout to get Blair back on the court.
Nobody is going to be perfect, but he quickly noticed the issue, called timeout, and adjusted immediately. Those are the things that save games from snowballing against you.

The other thing that stood out is how much the defense improved in the last two games than before the break. Even Blair is picking up good footwork and positioning, which he hadn't picked up in the 3.5 years prior. Way to go Blair! Also Blair's 6 assists were great to see (still not close to being a point guard, but involving teammates more and finding the open players is good). I thought when Dante first went to the bench and Blair played point, he did an excellent job.

Anybody else notice Wahab shooting jumpers from 15' instead of only camping under the basket? He's diversifying his game! I liked that and he also had an up and under move in the post at one point for a basket. I think he really needs to further develop a few of the counter moves that will play off of his right handed jump hook that he is always trying to get to. Teams have scouted him and they sit on that move and make it hard for him. If he can occasionally fake that and spin the other way, of do that up and under move, it makes him a much more effective post player. Expanding his game to taking and making a few 15' jumpers will help not only him but help the entire team as it opens up more offensive options. The one thing that became more obvious last night is that for all off Q's skills and positive physical traits, he really is not much of an explosive athlete. He does a great job blocking shots with his length and timing, but he does lack that quick jumping ability. On offensive he doesn't get much lift on his shots around the rim. He gets way with that because of his size/length, but if he could get more lift on those shots I think he would be more effective and he would become almost unstoppable when he gets that low position.

Popped us back up to 85th in Torvik's rankings. I'll take that, given the early season struggles. barttorvik.com/#

Dante: it’s nice to see pg who plays within himself and is unselfish. Super quick and fun watching him split double teams. Doesn’t jack up hero shots and manages the clock well. I don’t miss Akinjo at all. The only thing I miss about Mac is he would be guaranteed to be the go to guy to dribble drive and draw the FTs at the end of that game. We didn’t really have that guy last night and had to settle for a lousy Pickett pull up J instead.
Chudier: Love his tenacity, defensive presence and ability to finish at the rim. I don’t miss Leblanc anymore.
Qudus: You can tell he’s putting in the work and continues to add to his game. A better big east center than Yurt7 in my mind.
Ewing: the lineup change, use of bench and defensive strategy made so much sense last night. I loved his energy on the sidelines throughout the game.
Carey: I trust him in clutch moments like the last play of first half. Great body control and finishing ability.

Good point about Carey, that bucket at the end of the half to stem the tide and get our lead back to five was important, turned down the excitement level in the arena heading to the break.
