If we can play with confidence for 40 minutes instead of 35 there is no reason we cannot win both of these games. But let's start with one.

Guard Champagnie! Think we may matchup okay here with Jamarko.

Much better St. John’s than last year even without Figueroa. Tend to be inconsistent for stretches but still more depth and better suited to their coach’s style of play.

TO's will be the killer in this game. Their freshman PG, Posh Alexander, has looked really good in this system. Champagnie is a beast and Vince Cole is invisible for ten minutes, then hits like three shots in the next minute.
Our TO concerns are going to make or break this game. They don't shoot it well from deep so we can pack the paint, but if we give them fastbreak points or just easy points off of our TOs, our halfcourt defense won't matter. Neither team is particularly effective in half court offense, so if we can not turn the ball over and force them to take shots in the half court, we could get out and get better looks than they will.

Big comeback game from Blair time. He's been shooting efficiently but didn't take over last game like he could have. If the Harrises can break the press well, he'll get a lot of open looks and hopefully heat up.

Our Hoyas need to find a way to get some FT attempts. Hard to win when the opponent is getting 5-10 more free points at the FT line

Our Hoyas need to find a way to get some FT attempts. Hard to win when the opponent is getting 5-10 more free points at the FT line Hard to get to the line when you don’t have players who can drive to the basket and force contact. Mac was good at this and took it to the rim without fear of mixing it up. By the way, this also led to injuries. For example with Blair, you are not drawing fouls if you finish your drives with floaters and not at the rim.

This year's team is unlikely to see the FT line much at all unless it develops more of an attacking style. Perhaps the two Harris kids can do that, but thus far it seems the only players to draw fouls have been the two posts. Blair can expect more of the tight in your face defense he saw from Nova. Right now it is not hard to figure where the offense is coming from. Guard Blair closely, try to matchup with Pickett, double the post and take your chances with everyone else. Time for the senior transfers to step up. Carey needs to become a factor. More control from Harris and Bile or else use a very short leash and give freshmen the chance to learn. Wahab needs to become a more consistent threat and when doubled he needs to kick the ball out. Entry passes to either post seem to bring the flow of the offense to a complete halt as everyone watches while the posts tend to hold the ball while trying to make the same back to the basket move--a baby hook shot that goes in a little more than half the time. It was so much more enjoyable at the end of last year watching the ball movement on offense and seeing players functioning as if they were a coordinated unit. Cannot overstate the value of Mosley and Allen to that team. Expect the team to struggle mightily today on defense--what's new--particularly with the pace that St. Johns will try to impose.

I think Carey becoming a secondary scoring option will be critical towards our success going forward. I had high hopes for him and so far the returns are mixed. Has looked good in stretches but other times he’s invisible. Also really can’t seem to create his own shot off he dribble at this point.

Simple answer: add a bunch of down screen through sets to the usual option of side-to-side and skip passes to get him and others open shots. Our offense hadn’t done that much yet but mixing it in and becoming a little less predictable will help.

Carey looks like a really good open shooter, and he seems to be able to make a one-dribble move on a hard close out to get a clear pull up mid range jumper. But that seems to be the complete extent of his offensive game. On a team that could break down a defense off the bounce or through post up/double/kick out - he could be a very valuable piece. On this team - unless the point guard play improves dramatically, his impact will probably be fairly limited.

We can't even get Jamorko enough touches, and Carey is the 5th option (Q = option #1, Blair, JaMorko, Point Guard, Carey = option #5).

Also Q needs to pass it out quicker from the double/triple team in order for Carey to get more touches and involved in the offense. Too much time comes off the clock when Q holds the ball against the double team.

Too much time comes off the clock when Q holds the ball against the double team. I agree, but the spacing we use often leaves Wahab double or triple teamed with nobody to pass to. See the attached photo. While he's not double teamed here, there are many similar instances where he is. The offense needs better spacing. Attachments:

I dunno that photo looks like they are trying to isolate him one on one with the defender. If Q goes to his left away from the middle it's a one on one situation with nobody on Nova who can help out.

Agree we have shooters more than “attackers” but our veteran scorers (Pickett, Blair, Carey) need to be more savvy about drawing fouls. Pickett has 58 field goal attempts and only 5 FT attempts, Blair 74 FGA and 16 FTA, and Carey 36 FGA and only 2 FTA. These are veterans that need be able to pick their spots to initiate some contact (if necessary) and get to the line. Too often we are just trying to get shots up as quickly as possible.
