I think we need to give Ewing and staff credit for assembling a stopgap team to give the Hoyas a respectable bridge from the disaster of last years defections to next year's top 20 class. I am not throwing this year in the trash bin, but my realistic expectations are not that high. lets look at what they did. (1) Just as in his first year they needed a pg to run the team so they worked their butts off and found an underrated 3 star guard from Tennessee, Dante Harris. I think we all now see this kid was greatly underrated. I now believe his coach who said he was the best high school pg in the the state of Tennessee. (2) They knew Dante would need time to adjust to division 1 college ball so they went to the transfer portal and found a serviceable senior pg in Jalen Harris that could steady the team until Dante could make the adjustment. Jalen has been a little more erratic than they thought but Dante has ben ahead of the learning curve so it is working out. (3) They needed a big forward to spell Pickett when he tired for rebounding and scoring so they went again to the portal and found Bile. He like Jalen has been erratic but has potential to be that stopgap big forward. If he accepts his role he can be very effective. His role should be a Boubacar Aw type forward. He should be a rebounder/defender forward. Take the 3pt shot only when teams overplay the double team on Wahab. (4) They needed a scoring guard to replace McClung so they went to portal and got Carey. He was nonexistent until yesterday, but now we know he can be a considerate contributor if he takes the initiative and shoot the ball when open (5) Also they have recruited two players in Clark and Berger who can play either small forward or big guard. We all were pleased with Clark from game one and saw his potential, but now from the last two games we see that they may have struck gold in another underrated player in Berger. Holloway right now is the only player we have not had the chance to see his potential. Again this team will not win the BE tournament or maybe not make the big dance but it also will not be an embarrassment to this storied institution, and given the events of last year that is a testament to Ewing and staff. In Holloway's few minutes, I've seen he can be very physical also make a real good drive off the dribble in Game 1. He seems like he closer to 6-5 1/2 then 6-7. But he will be a decent bench player for 4 years.

Paging Double97, where are you? Has the cat got your tongue? Oh dont worry, I'm sure he has something to nitpick. Game definitely wasnt perfect so "fire ewing"... It was a good, exciting game against another bad team. I’m glad they won and would love it if we were able to look back and say this was a turning point for this staff but I’d be surprised if that was true. I still think these guys stink and we’d be better off going in a different direction ASAP.

I have seen where some people have said St John's is a bad team this year. I am not sure I agree with that. They do turn the ball over and can be undisciplined sometimes, but they play very hard and have some interesting athletes who are going to do well in the system they run. It doesn't appear they will do well in games when they need to run a lot of half court sets, but the way they play I am not sure how often they will end up in those games. They could use some more size to help on the boards also, but seem to overcome that with guys going aggressively to the glass for rebounding opportunities. The freshman point guard is a good player who is only going to get better as the year goes on.
I am not sure what their record wile at the end of this year but they are going to give alton of teams trouble that are not comfortable playing at a fast pace. I would not be surprised at all to see them end up near .500 in the conference.

Checking in with the Johnnies, they are heartbroken that they lost the game. They kind of feel like I suppose Trump feels losing to Biden--there is no way that should have lost to a cellar-ranked team like us. They are going to come out snorting fire on Sunday. We had better be ready.

They have lots of athletes but not a lot of shooters. I think that their coach hurts his team with his undying commitment to the frenzy approach. It works well for much of the game but if you are up 7-9 points late in the game you might consider taking more time off the clock when you have the ball. It's been a problem for them a few times this year. They gave the Hoyas chances to keep coming back in the second half--and this time the Hoyas did.

Happy with the win! And I’m sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but how in the heck did we allow them to tie up the game on an inbounds play with 0.9 seconds left? Thank God we won or that really would have stung.

There is zero excuse for a senior to get outworked, outpositioned, and rooted our underneath the goal with .9 seconds left and your 7 footer with hands high denying an easy lob.

Alexander looked excellent. Champagnie looked unstoppable. But, BYU put them in a half court game and beat them bad. BYU was in control the entire time. They even showed that in this game. They had runs where they looked dominant and then they had runs where they looked awful and the Hoyas looked incredible. Their style may hurt them some games, but it will help in others.

He's a grouchy guy. I don't think he ever enjoyed one thing in life...the bees, the birds, ice cream....nothing! If you walked up to the guy and said how you doing sir, my isn't it a beautiful day. I betcha he would reply with bah humbug! This guy doesn't like Ewing, he doesn't like the staff, he doesn't like the ball players, he doesn't like milk and cookies. He doesn't like anything!

Qudus has to share the blame with Blair for that basket. Before the inbound pass and while the ref was holding the ball, Pickett kept pulling Wahab’s shirt to move him to his left to place him between the basket and the inbounding player. Qudus just moved back to the right. Qudus has to follow the leader.

This game left me wrung out. Terrible rebounding and more bad turnovers. And we can't blame Q for the rebounding, as he can't be everywhere and do everything. None blocks was damn impressive. Other things to note:
D. Harris has to be our starting point guard going forward. He may not have been perfect last night, but under the circumstances, he was outstanding. Carey is not a point guard. He may have had to play it in a pinch last night, but it didn't work out. Berger looks like a shooter, which was his rep. He has to keep getting minutes. Someone wrote earlier that Bile is a black hole. I pretty much concur, but he still looks like our best option off the bench at the 4.

As bad a job as Juggy did on his man Qudus shuffled 3 feet to the right as the inbounder looked corner and then got flat with his angle getting back in position. Thanks for pointing out.

Posh Alexander is a heck of a player. Perhaps Dante & Posh will battle for years ....the pass Alexander made was incredible on the game tying play. Was there a defensive scheme problem & poor positioning? Yes. But I had to re-watch that pass a few times because I couldn’t believe it didn’t hit the baseline. Posh Alexander threaded the needle there.

In the opening minutes, Q blocked an SJU layup attempt and pinned it against the backboard. For some unknown reason, this was called a goal tend, though it looked like he got it before it hit the backboard, on the way up etc. Had it been called the clean block it looked like, Qudus would have ended the night with an extremely rare Big Man Triple Double - 17 pts, 10 rebs and 10 blocks. He was ROBBED! Confident that hasn't happened in a while for the boys in blue and gray. Wahab is shaping up to be a major asset, going to be a lot of fun watching him match up with Watson, Theo John and the super mobile guys like Freemantle and Mamu. Coach has experimented with small lineups, BIle at the 5, but we are a better team when we can keep Q going, both ways. He is mobile enough to get to the wings and cover the stretches, just has to keep working on the schemes, switches and block outs.
For me, the other story is D Harris. Obviously we got a lot more than many suspected with him, swagger being the most important intangible, speed and outside shooting being the most important measurables. As noted above, years of battles between Dante and Posh could be fascinating, both small scale exciting hoops games and big scale if the teams trend well and we get back to very relevant, very big games between the squads at home and at the Garden.
Finally, Creighton got beat by Marquette last night and will be hungry. Their game with SJU Thursday should be exciting, great wing match ups, not a lot of post-up action, fast, small ball action. SJU is going to want it, at home at Carnasecca Arena, after the loss to us, but so is Creighton, not wanting to get killed in the rankings with a two loss week. Hopefully it crushes St. John's soul, but I have been saying that about just about everything since 1984 and I no longer actually expect it to happen. They will be ready for us Sunday and we better be ready for the road.

Pretty sure that first shot hit the board before Q got it, looked like goaltending at the time. But he still filled the box score pretty well.
