The problem I have with it is that those of us undergrads who still live in University dorms really CANT make it to these games during the semester break, because the dorms are closed. Its not a matter of people not being interested enough and choosing not to go, its that there really is no option. I'd love to come back 5 days early to attend a UConn/Duke game, even if there were no busses and I needed to walk to a metro station or take a cab to MCI, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. However.... I'd have nowhere to sleep! Last year the University didn't reopen the dorms until noon on the day before classes began, which left a very small window of time for us to come back. I'm not sure how things work with the apartments, and if you can move back in whenever you see fit. But I do know that if a game is held over winter break, virtually the entire freshmen class is SOL (unless they live nearby) because they all live on campus and are not going to have an open dorm to return to. It also means that a sizeable amount of sophomores and juniors-- those who live in McCarthy, Kennedy, Reynolds, Copley, LXR and Village C East-- likely would be unable to attend as well. I'd guess that the absence of these thousands of potential spectators would have a significant impact on student section attendance (and volume). This is especially unfortunate when Duke (or UConn or whoever) has a really large contingent of fans at MCI... That CAN'T come across too well on TV.
I don't blame the athletic department for "screwing over" me or anyone else. I just think it's unfortunate that so many people will be unable (not unwilling) to come with the dorm situation the way it is.
