Just did some lineup checking and found that pretty much any 3 guard lineup assuming Mackinjo with Jessie and Josh was our best performing scheme all year. There were obviously some that did better than others and the current one of Mac, James and Jagan is actually the worst combo assuming Mac and James are sure starters. Putting Jahvon or Greg in there for Jagan has done much better but again limited samples with those. They all outperform 2 guards and anyone else we could reasonably play at the 3 though. I do admit my fault in thinking that putting Kaleb in that spot would work. The haters can rejoice.

get govan involved early. get him some shots and keep him engaged on both ends. SH will double him but pat still has to find ways to get the ball to him. we also could get some easy baskets off the double team. govan HAS to avoid the fouls 25 ft away from the basket while he's trying to 'defend' the high screen. we don't play much zone so it's up to him to play smart and avoid foul trouble.

I'd imagine Jessie will have plenty of friends/family in the building. Here's to hoping he goes all-out for them.

Might be a painful pre-game, but ESPN U is showing the 1996 BET final at 11, Iverson and Page's Hoyas v. Ray Allen, Travis Knight's Lying Cheating Whoring Huskies

I don't know if he views it this way but I think this game (and this tourney) will make or break any dreams Govan has of an NBA career. If he comes out strong and fearless and takes It to the SH bigs he may impress NBA scouts present at the game. But if he gets stuffed like he did last game against SH and plays tentatively then I expect it to be a long night for him and the Hoyas, especially if we keep trying to run our offense through him. Also, let's not forget Willard has a formula for winning the BET. The Hall surprised everyone several years ago when Whitehead dominated and they won the tourney. It wouldn't surprise me if he tries the same with Powell. I think the key will be limiting Powell to less than 30 points.

I'm leaning to getting Akinjo and Mac going early. We basically have 2 plays for Govan 1) Clear out one side of the court, Govan posts and one of the guards attempts to feed him the ball and 2) Govan throws a pick and we try and get him the ball for a 3. Every opposing team knows the play is coming and we tend to force the play even if it disrupts the flow. Mackinjo have both forced (primarily Mac) the post pass recently for turnovers. I think the lengthy benchings is in the back of their minds they run the play even when it's not there. If Akinjo and Mac get going early, that in itself will open up the game for Jesse. Should be interesting which way PE goes..

Our team is not consistent or good enough to boil the offense down to "we need to get X player going early." The offense needs to execute properly. We need ball movement, crisp passing, movement off the ball, and we need to avoid turnovers. We need to get all of our players solid, open shots, be it Akinjo, McClung, Govan, or others. We don't have a player like Howard or Ponds or Powell where you can expect the player to score 20+ every night, so we cannot plan that way.

Vince Young says hello (admittedly, football is different).

Rebound and play strong team defense. The rest will fall in place, this team has no issues getting the ball in the hoop (even when shots aren't falling).

Defensive boards Ball movement Free throws (missing front end of one-and-one basically means turnover) Beat full court press (no more end of game like home vs. St. Johns)

This game is wholly dependent on which Jessie shows up. Our success will depend on him, since he's still the focal point of our offense by playing down low. Here's hoping we get the good Jessie!

Tend to agree with this. Fighting to establish solid post position down low is something to look for early. A lot of his missed shots recently were lengthy, awkward 2PFG where he was fed outside the lane and tried to force up difficult attempts. Get down low, big fella, and establish the post!

Good point, why feed Jessie when he hasn’t established solid position down low. If he isn’t “down low” it results in forced awkward shots that don’t go and lead to bad Jessie in a funk. He has to want it.
