Powell gave by far the best performance against the Hoyas of any player this season. If I were a Seton Hall fan, I would be scratching my head about the way they opened conference play. They played tough and well in December, but looked pretty lethargic once BE play started. It does seem that they returned to form just in time for a run. To me, the most difficult thing to swallow about last night was not the defense, but the rebounding. The Hoyas just gave up and watched. Hey it was his Tre Campbell moment. Sometimes these things happen. Tre Campbell had another moment last night hitting 5 of 5 three pointers and 19 points against the number one team.

While I appreciate Ewing's candor, why isn't the team ready to play? The sports journalists did not ask of course. I am a huge Coach Ewing fan, but part of coaching is making sure the players are ready to play. I don't have an issue with him stating the obvious after the game last night, but I think everyone (players and staff) need to share some of the burden for not being ready to compete right from the tip last night. Everyone knows how important these games are, and someone like Coach Ewing and his staff need to find a way to instill that urgency in his guys every night. The team can compete at the required level, and they did for some stretches last night, but they feel behind early and gave Seton Hall a bunch of confidence and could not claw their way back. Hope it is a learning experience for the entire program.

The Seton Hall play of the game was early when Powell had the ball late in the shot clock with Pickett guarding him tightly. He pump faked knowing Pickett would try to block and drew a foul with the shot clock expiring. That play was so savvy....using our desire to play tough defense against us. The shot clock winding down only helped his play.

The last three games are a good example of why this team is not ready to be a tourney team.
* Villanova had a bad game and we played okay, but couldn't hit enough shots to take advantage of it * We outplayed Butler but watched as they made hard shots and we missed them * We sucked against Seton Hall but also watched as they hit their open shots, and we again missed.
This team can't possibly win when we are missing our open shots from three and when Jessie is completely ineffective inside. We only have three guys who can create a shot; if Jessie is not effective, like in the Butler game, we simply do not have enough bullets.
We simply aren't good enough or consistent enough to weather bad shooting runs in the games we play well. And then we aren't consistent enough in effort and execution to not drop a load like Seton Hall.

I probably missed this in the prior 25 pages but was Mourning out because of injury or a healthy DNP?

The guys get 7 days off, and I believe Mac and Akinjo are worn down. You can tell me they played all year round in AAU, but the mental, physical toll of BE ball, the travel and remember the need to attend/pass class is new to 3 of our starters. You think they were flying home from an AAU games at midnight when they were in HS and waking up for class later that day? So yeah, I beleive in the freshmen wall. This break is a positive and looking toward a big opponent at home like Nova is good for motivation.
SHU is a good team. They beat UK (despite a UK half court shot to send it to OT) and won at Maryland. What chance do we think the Hoyas would have in those games? SHU is better than us, and we were playing on their court. We had no reason to expect a W, we had hope but I think we are acting like we lost to a bad team. Powell is a talent.
I can also stay positive because it's become clearer to me that next year is going to be MUCH better. You replace Govan with Yurt7, that is a bigger upgrade than I previously thought. Maybe Govan was trying to prove Ewing's Sirius radio comments correct about not wanting to play defense, but he had an awful game and we simply cannot over come that right now.
We have 3 rim protectors coming in for next year and if I asked what the biggest need on this team was for next year - that is it. Yes, our gaurds need to improve their defensive positioning, they are 18-19 year olds, they can learn new tricks. But, I have no doubt that a few big shot blockers will make a huge difference.
Finally, let's not forget Akinjo was added well after the season ended. I am certain there will be fallout from the usual coach firings and grad/regular transfers. That marketplace is HUGE and growing. Ewing will be all over it, I am certain. This team is more attractive returning 4 straters and Yurt7 than it has been in 4 seasons.

Manuel left their program but he was listed as the #17 Center by Rivals... His not being at SH helps the point Smokey was making... The point was made regarding "last night's players" and that guy not only didn't play but isn't even a member of the team. So I'm supposed to find the rest of the info credible? Not an attack on smokeyjack, because it is entirely possible he's got a valid point to be considered, but as soon as amazingly inaccurate data is used to make that point it all goes down the drain as far as I'm concerned. Sorry to have posted “amazingly inaccurate data.” I don’t know who has or has not left SHU’s roster and frankly don’t care. I know they have successfully signed 4 4-star players according to the largest sports reporting entity in the world who could be on their current roster compared to the seven who actually are on ours. I removed Derrickson, Sodom and Walker from our list, because they were 4 star recruits who are no longer on our roster. By any measure you want to use, we have more talent and are having less success. Call me a hater. Spin that any way you want or whatever. I think we stink. I think our ROI is among the worst in the country. I think having a top 20 school in the basketball-rich capital of the free world should equate to a vastly superior product to the one we’re watching. I live 5 minutes from a small school named Villanova doing quite well with a similar profile and far less annual spend. And I absolutely think the coaching staff shares the burden of culpability for the trash product we’re putting on the court.

Program improvement is a long-term situation. Last night was a setback, but we are less than TWO SEASONS in here. No reason to panic at all.

I really think you guys are overselling rim protection. Sure, it would be great to have a great defensive center with some rim protection. A plus defender at center will help, but it's not going to change the fact that our guys are clueless on rotations and have no idea where to be. Is it going to prevent wide open threes when our guys get lost? Of course not. But it’ll prevent ridiculously easy layups and putbacks like the ones Seton Hall was getting last night.

They also have Taurean Thompson who was a 4 star, but I don't think he played last night. Espn is the worst ranking system by far. We both have 3 consensus top 100 players (excluding Yurt and Obiagu) www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/georgetown/2019.htmlwww.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/seton-hall/2019.html

And I absolutely think the coaching staff shares the burden of culpability for the trash product we’re putting on the court. No hate or "spin" but I do think you are discounting experience level as a factor. For example, take the primary reason Seton Hall won last night, Powell, vs a major contributing factor to why the Hoyas played poorly, Akinjo, and compare their stats for their freshman year. Granted that Powell played 33 games his freshman year and Akinjo has played only 25 so far. Powell: Points- 10.7 FG%- .392 3ptFG%- .332 Assists- .9 Turnovers- .97 Rebounds- 2.2 Minutes- 23.8 Akinjo: Points- 13.1 FG%- .348 3ptFG- .375 Assists- 5.1 Turnovers- 3.12 Rebounds- 2.8 Minutes- 30.9 My point is, Akinjo is a freshman and Powell is a junior with 60+ extra college games under his belt than Akinjo has. That makes a huge difference. Look how far Powell has come from his decent but underwhelming freshman year stats. And when you look at the comparison is it too difficult to believe that Akinjo might be playing the same role for the Hoyas in a season or two that Powell displayed to us last night? Experience level is a huge reason why the Hoyas are up and down this season.

Myles Powell was way more efficient (112.2) as a freshman than Akinjo (99.5). Powell shot 52.1% from two, Akinjo 32.9% (and Powell was even better in league play at 62.8%, whereas Akinjo is at 18.6%).
Akinjo does have a much better assist rate than Powell did, but Powell's turnover rate was almost half Akinjo's, and Powell was a better offense rebounder, and similar on defensive rebounds.
Point being, Powell showed a lot of offense potential as a freshman, too, and as a shooter, Powell was better. Akinjo is probably a better distributor though.

Part of the reason why these comparisons aren't really great imo is because they compare complimentary players to primary players. Powell was efficient because all he had to do was catch and shoot. All of his offense was created for him. Hard to turn the ball over when you never have to handle it.
I don't know how many 2's he took but I'm guessing it wasn't many. He was a a catch and shoot 3 guy mostly.

The players that Georgetown relies on to play a similar role are still major works in progress.

This one really took the wind out of the sails. I had a good feeling going into this one--oh well.
Expectations are lowered now, so I hope they go out there against Nova feeling loose and playing with house money.
I still feel good about this team and the direction its going. Lots still needs fixing, but I'd imagine that similar to how Pickett's D improved dramatically from last season to this, the current crop of frosh will work hard on their D as well to make sure we are a much more balanced side in 2019-20.

Especially hard to compare when they play different positions and Powell played on a #9 seed tournament team with a very strong Junior class. His role was supportive as a three point specialist, with 2/3 of his attempts being from three and 24 minutes a game. Akinjo has a lot more more on his plate.

Guess I would have rather played the walk ons when they were gassed. And Jessie was the first one back if I recall. Should have been the last back. Would have liked the message he sent if the backcourt and Jessie never returned...as I think about it other than that inexplicable turnover on that offensive board Pickett was at the back of the deli line as to why we lost. I don't understand this Jesse hate. He was no worse on defense than the rest of the starters and only he and Pickett played worth a damn on the other side of the ball. It feels like we deflect a lot on this board when our freshman guards the bed! I wanted Jessie AND the backcourt to sit.
