Don’t let him/her bait you. He’s got nothing positive to say about coach or Mac. Win or lose, the same negative shtick. Now it’s Akinjo.

Doing too much and getting into a personal battle with the opposing pg aren't necessarily the same thing though. One is mostly driven by ego, and the other mostly driven by a desire to win. Ponds is a Junior and every game he plays there are instances where he is trying to do too much. He's good enough to make some of them, but he takes at least a few ill advised shots every game. You work with kids like that to minimize it imo, but It's the nature of the beast. It's part of why they are who they are. This is correct which I said Pat has to reign him in this game more so than others. He will undoubtedly go at them 1 v 1 a few times in the game and that is fine if it keeps him engaged. If he does it repeatedly he has to sit. That to me means minimize it. He had been getting a little better but last game he regressed a little bit. He has an incredible competitive spirit and this game will likely bring that out of him more than most this year. If he tries to do too much this game it will hurt us more because of the quality of their guards and the likely flow of the game. You beat St. John's the same way you beat us for most of the season before the last 2 games. Slow us down on O and make us work on D. If we play that reckless 1v1 style which is essentially how St. John's plays we likely lose because right now their players are better than ours. I mostly agree although I think Pat has done a good job sitting him down when he starts to try and go at it alone. People will focus on the end of the game, and the 6 turnovers, but I thought James had a pretty good game against Butler. He absolutely dominated the first 10 minutes, set the tone, and was a big reason why Mal got off early. After that stretch I thought there was no doubt we were the better team if both teams played to potential. At the end of the game he wasn't good, and that will stick in people's memory, but the game was pretty much already decided by then.

I think we should temper expectations as relates to the crowd. GU is still on break, so there will be no student section. We might still have a good non-student crowd, but the atmosphere would be better with a student section. While it won't be the same noise/atmosphere of a full student section (as you mentioned), the student section(s) were nearly full during the Howard game for the "student for a day" promotion. 7,519 was the listed attendance, so hopefully there will at least be bodies in the seats throughout the lower bowl tomorrow. Interesting numbers - wonder how many of the 7K+ were Howard students. This is a huge advantage of playing local teams given our homecourt. We should be getting squads like George Mason, Howard, etc. on the schedule just to add another thousand or two to our home crowds.

Just wanted to point out that I was thoroughly impressed with this summary of Georgetown by the St. John's site. It's clear that the writer has watched Georgetown play, and wasn't just writing from stat lines.

Granted it was a lopsided game so you didn't hear much from the Howard fans, but it didn't seem overwhelming. There were certainly some sitting in my section, but that's a given since I'm behind the visiting team bench. It seemed like the two end court sections were full of families and youth teams. I also know a bunch of general DC basketball fans that made a point to go to the game. For context, here are the attendance numbers this season: UMES (Tuesday 8:30 PM - election night) 4189 CCSU (Saturday 6:00 PM) 5270 Campbell (Saturday 12:00 PM - Thanksgiving weekend) 6788 Richmond (Wednesday 7:00 PM) 4912 Liberty (Monday 6:30 PM) 4011 SMU (Saturday 12:00 PM) 6763 Appalachian St (Tuesday 6:30 PM - winter break) 4205 Little Rock (Saturday 12:00 PM - winter break) 5189 Howard (Saturday 12:00 PM - winter break) 7519

You'd have to be blind not to see Akinjo's competitiveness and also believe that he won't be amped up for this game. This is what makes him good and will make him special over the course of his career. He is going up against the preseason BE POY and leading scorer so he just needs to make sure he plays within himself and takes advantage of the right opportunities. If he finishes with 10 pts and 7 assists, I think we have a better shot then if he finishes with a stat line like 15 and 3.

Mullin's stroke is still smooth as hell! Do we always let opponents use McDonough? I would think most opponents would do pre-game walk-throughs at the arena in which they'll be playing (i.e., Cap One). Is this unusual, owing to Coach Ewing's strong relationship with Mullin/Richmond, or normal course of business?

It definitely has happened before this season (see Liberty below), so it might be normal course of business. As DFW HOYA pointed out, with so many other events happening at Capital One Arena, they probably don't have the court set up early enough to allow visiting teams to practice there a day in advance or even sometimes earlier in the day of the game.

I know in WSOC that the opposing team is allowed to practice on the same field as you are. So if we don't want them to get accustomed to Shaw Field we theoretically could practice on Cooper and keep them off Shaw....Not 100% sure on this but believe it is true. I suspect we practice in McDonough and know Verizon real well----two very different visual venues, so let them practice at McDonough.

I can't believe that SJU has not won in DC in 15 years.

FYI — the students start back Wednesday, so most will likely be back by tomorrow.
I expect 8-11k.

Kinda nice this game has some buzz to it. If we win...we may look back 2 seasons from now and say "this is when the hoyas became nationally relevant again".

You did not offer to drive her back to school early and take her to the game? You're a terrible father.😉

I tend to think that it's games like this that will speed up Akinjo's growth. The better the competition, the better he's going to be. That's in the nature of a kid that wants to kill his opponent. He's going to have to up his game to win. And losing isn't a palatable option. Same goes for LeBlanc. I feel like strong opponents, nearly as much as coaching, help the most competitive people to develop and improve. Here's to hoping that I'm not as full of crap as I often feel myself to be.
