Happy to get the win and I liked the ball movement in the 2nd half but, if our guys don't improve the 3 point defense considerably and right freaking now, it's going to be a very long season. If Liberty hadn't gone cold in the 2nd, the pucker factor for this one would have been high.

The team really, really needs to stop rushing when we have a significant lead late in the game. I get the sense that Patrick just doesn't teach them how to use the clock in those situations, or they would do it.
Overall, though, I thought this was one of our better games, and definitely nicely balanced on offense.

Liberty destroyed 114th ranked Georgia State yesterday by 26. In fact, Liberty is now ranked ahead of us on KenPom (91 v 98). We are a slight favorite anyway because we are playing at home but, but this game is not going to be an easy one. The fact that we need to play our A game to win this one simply demonstrates how weak the team is at this point. If we need to play our best to beat a 100-level opponent, at home, it's not a good omen for things to come in the Big East season. Is it possible that maybe, it's too early to put much stock in KenPom? KenPom had us as the slight favorite and we won. I don't understand why some people are intimidated by advanced stats and analytics. It's just a tool to analyze the game, as much as video review, a box score, or watching with your eyeballs. Simply because I enjoy looking at them, and making points relating to them doesn't mean it's the only factor that matters. And, as I said yesterday, anything can happen in a game - stuff like KenPom are useful to analyze trends, player stats, and team attributes, but you only play a game once. I've also said that obviously it's early and things can change. I truly hope we improve, end up on an upward trajectory, and end in the top 40, and make the tournament. I would be ecstatic. And for what it's worth, I do think we played one of our better games of the year. I think we were crisper on offense, I thought our defense didn't have as many lapses as it's had in recent games, and we didn't let Liberty torch us from three (though they did miss some open shots). Do I think we played our "A" game? No, but I think it was a step above the effort we've seen in some other games. Was I more worried about this game than I should have been? Maybe. But I think it was a justified opinion, even if it goes against the flow a bit. We almost always bring our A game against Syracuse, so I look forward to proving ourselves there.

Between sitting Blair in the last game and not starting Pickett tonight, PE is certainly trying to communicate to some of these players. Separately, I was hoping that Akinjo would place a higher priority on getting his teammates into successful situations. 19 points, 1 assist, and 4 turnovers is not a bad score line, but I would rather see 8 points & 10 assists. When PE has talked about selfishness the last 2 weeks, I wonder to what extent he is talking to James. I thought Blair hit the two biggest shots of the game late in the first half to put us ahead for good. Love what he brings to the table.

I didn't get the chance to watch the game last night but from checking the box score and reading some articles it sounds like the team showed more energy and focus and had some real balanced scoring. Getting about half of their points from the teams' guards is great to see and makes other teams have to respect everyone on the floor. The last few years other teams knew who they needed to stop in order to slow down the offense ( and to some degree teams will still focus on Jessie) but being able to depend on more players to provide offense makes this years team much harder to defend, which is obvious from the 80-90 points they seem to be scoring most games. We all wanted them to play faster and play a more exciting/interesting brand of basketball and it seems like the staff is starting to get the players who can play that style effectively. Hopefully that resonates with recruits in coming years.

IMO, best win of the season so far in terms of completeness and opponent. I do agree with mapei, Ewing MUST teach these guys a 4 minute offense. When you have such a large lead, bleed the game out and avoid any unnecessary headaches at the end of games. It is good to see some decent end-game FT shooting, but still there is no need for last night's game to end with fouling by Liberty. We have the personnel this season to play keep away and milk the clock. Do it already.
Anyway, like what I saw on offense and defensively I saw glimpses of what this team is capable of. I am glad to see 9 guys got 10 minutes or more. That is good use of the player rotations since at Syracuse I assume their will be a tighter substitution pattern.

The pacing of this game should be interesting. Our adjusted tempo is 31 of 353, whereas Liberty's is 334. Our average possession length on offense is 15.8 (52nd ranked), whereas Liberty's is 19.2 (330th ranked). I have not seen Liberty play, but based on those stats, it seems like they must be very deliberate on offense. As it turns out, Georgetown was able to impose its pace on Liberty, which I think worked out in our favor. For perspective, coming into the Liberty game, Georgetown was averaging 74.57 possessions per game, and Liberty 67.75. Last night, the game had 77 possessions, meaning that it was a fast game for both teams - but only slightly higher pace than our norm, whereas it was a much faster game than normal for Liberty. For what it's worth, Syracuse is an even slower team than Liberty, averaging 67.28 possessions per game. It'll be interesting to see whether the Syracuse zone slows us down a lot.

I thought our defense for most of the first half was as bad as it's been. There were open threes all over the place. The second half was better but was also helped by Liberty cooling off from distance.

We saw flashes of both the very good (most of the second half) and very bad (first half and closing stretch) yesterday. Waaaayyyy too many turnovers, at at times the ball movement gets stagnant (pretty sure they showed Ewing yell after a bad shot "move the damn ball!")--but Mac is starting to find his comfort on offense, Akinjo is knocking down open shots, LeBlanc does a little bit of everything, and when focused, the team plays pretty decent defense. Hoyas will need to play a full 40 of the good ball to beat Cuse--but no doubt Cuse is beatable and hopefully the atmosphere will instead of rattling them, get them amped up.

(When he wants to run) Move the ball! Get back! He gets his points across. Especially when there's only 500 people in the building.

On one Pickett drive, Ewing yelled "Finish!!" as he went to the basket. Pickett went up strong and drew a foul, so I assume the coach was happy.

As has been stated here already I thought the ball movement was much better. We made a concerted effort to swing the ball and I thought Jessie and Trey did a nice job of passing out of the double team. I also liked that it seemed to me that we ran a few more half court sets than we’ve seen throughout the year. As far as the defense...not great but one positive on one play I saw was a late close out by Jamorko had him chopping his feet which is a really good sign of correct fundamentals being taught. Now hopefully that sort of thing permeates throughout the rest of the team.

So clearly not "hold the ball" or "run clock" when we're up double digits under 3-4 minutes to go. Or with 32 seconds to go at the end of the 1st half. Not just last night, but this has been a recurring issue since he got here. It needs to be fixed and it seems like it would be a relatively easy one to fix at that.

With the win, Georgetown's NET ranking jumped from 87 to 57. It's almost like this is all meaningless until January/February It's meaningless from the perspective of what NET should represent at the end of the season. It's not meaningless for getting a better understanding of how the rankings change on a day to day basis since we don't know the exact formula like we did for RPI. For instance, the win last Wednesday against Richmond resulted in a drop in Georgetown's NET ranking from 78 to 80.
