It's not going to be much of a "stage." They will be playing in front of a few hundred friends & family in a convention hall. Even Atlantis, which is now easily the best holiday tourney, has a small-time feel. But at least those games are worth watching because they have 7-8 legitimate teams. This tourney is a dud. Nothing to gain, and everything to lose (except we don't risk a home loss I guess). Wow, and I thought I had pessimisticitis. The players get a nice trip as a reward for their efforts, and we may well beat at least two teams that are superior to last year's early season dreck. And the whole Pat returns to Jamaica is a publicity thing. Is it close to great, no. Is it a dud when viewed through a reasonable lens, also no. Quite the contrary; I am very optimistic for this season (but I was also very optimistic in 2015 and 2016 so take it for what its worth). I am just not excited at all for this tournament. These tourneys serve two purposes: (1) playing quality competition in a neutral environment; and/or (2) allowing a team to play additional OOC games. This one fails the first criterion badly, so the only benefit is the additional games we get to play. I truly hope those additional games prove to be worthwhile, and not a continuation of last year's scheduling philosophy. Now please excuse me, there are some teenagers on my lawn...

The Jamaica field is pretty weak. Granted, it’s better than having a full slate of MEAC teams (and who knows we may have some anyway), but a lot will depend on what matchups we get. If we get the teams in the high 100s and low 200s - and win (which I think we will) - that could be a set of decent wins.
The bigger concern about losing isn’t that we would lose to one of the better teams in the field, but rather that losing might put us against Florida A&M or Central Connecticut, and in that case, the matchups aren’t any better than what we had last season at home.
Still, I think the bracket will likely be set up to give us the better games - at least that’s what I’m hoping for.

Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment (VWSE) and Jersey Mike’s Subs are proud to announce the title sponsorship of the 2018 Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic, an annual pre-season college basketball tournament, to be held in Montego Bay. The newest NCAA basketball MTE tournament for college teams and their fans will be held November 16-18, 2018, in one of the most iconic destinations in the Caribbean. "From our ongoing involvement with the NCAA, we know college basketball fans are sub sandwich fans," said Rich Hope, Chief Marketing Officer, Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc. "Title sponsorship of the 2018 Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic allows us to extend the season so we can continue to engage with our customers during the tournament." Eight (8) teams will participate in the tournament with twelve (12) tournament games held on select campus sites and eight (8) games at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in Jamaica. All eight (8) games played in the Montego Bay Convention Centre will be televised live on CBS Sports Network. www.vanwagner.com/news/2018/van-wagner-sports-entertainment-and-jersey-mikes-announces-the-title-sponsorship-of-the-2018-jersey-mikes-jamaica-classicH/T Whipple 8 games for 8 teams over 3 days in Jamaica likely means they are keeping the two 4 team brackets this year.

Our first game last year was on Nov. 12th. Our game vs. Illinois is on Nov. 13th.
According to wiki: The 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season will begin on November 6, 2018. The first tournament will be the 2K Sports Classic and the season will end with the Final Four in Minneapolis on April 8, 2019. Practices officially will begin in September 2018.
Will there be an earlier first game this year or is Illinois it? A cupcake sounds good to get the rust out before Illinois.

I don't know, that would be six games before an early Thanksgiving. Lots of space to fill between then and conference play. One warm up game at the most I would think.

Not really as I would expect Coach Ewing to take a break in games scheduled after the Jamaica tournament of a week or so (through thanksgiving) and end the month with 2 games. Leaving 4-5 OOC games plus any conference games in December. Coach Ewing may also only schedule 1 game before the trip to Champaign out of fear of early season fatigue of 6 games in a 12 day period. The question will be how important does Coach Ewing and staff feel getting his team some early season action before playing on a bigger stage is? Because the comp in Jamaica isn't the greatest and because this roster looks to be deep (I think Coach Ewing will have at least a 10 man rotation), I see the possibility of 2 cup cakes before Illinois. We'll see how it shakes out...

There's 9 OOC games plus the exempt games from the Jamaica Tourney (2 in Jamaica; 2 from the other half of the tourney at home). My guess is that we play two before going to Champaign, play 2 in Jamaica, play Thanksgiving weekend. That leaves 7 games to schedule between the Monday after Thanksgiving (Syracuse + 6 Home) and Christmas--assuming that we don't try and kick one of the OOC games into 2019. I don't think that they play more than 2 games in Montego Bay.

Interesting. Still shopping for one more big name perhaps?

Would contradict some earlier reports, but if Austin Peay, FAMU, Campbell and Central Connecticut are potential opponents for campus games, while 4 more teams TBD have slightly higher profiles, that would be a mild upgrade to the schedule in itself.

SMU game at home, according to Casual.
Everyone seems to have the same opinion of this game & the developing schedule - not great, but a nice step up from last year.
