That’s what happens when you hand over the keys to family. There’s an air of arrogance and the feeling of lifetime employment. Others around you resent your position and you lack the grit to succeed. And JT Jr. was certainly not an example to be emulated when it came to media, etc. That approach worked for John Thompson Jr. because of the era in which he coached. In the modern world, it doesn't work. It can work. If you have All-Americans at every spot. We don't and, likely, never will. With guys that have potential, how much does a coach want to divulge? If, for instance, JT3 had thrown DaJuan under the bus on the regular for not rebounding and not hustling, does that hit in his confidence cause him to never even get the cup of coffee he got? I have no clue. For some guys, they'd find it as an f*** you and show more. Other guys go the other way and turtle up. Do you treat all of the guys the same publicly and do your personal work in private? They're good questions but I'm not sure one can say that JT3 screwed that up without being around those particular teams. Sometimes you get a feel for a team as a fan. A lot of those teams, I didn't have a feel for at all. I'd zoom in on one charismatic/demonstrative guy and assume that was part of the character of the team. I'm pretty sure I was wrong most years.

I thought Pat had a good game today.
He sat Jessie when he was getting picked on defensively late in the 1st half and Grayson did well. Probably late, but he did it for the remainder of the half and we responded.
He sat Mac in the 2nd when he missed a couple of assignments and then coaxed some decent minutes out of Jagan.
We also looked better when Cooley went to zone. Guessing he worked on that a bit since Wednesday.

I thought he coached a good game today. At this point, any win is a good win.

I still say that 2 occurances that were beyond III's control killed his GTown coaching career: 1.) Austin's diagnosis and 2.) Tyler's heart condition..... If Austin was health that's a final 4 team and maybe more considering the two teams that played for the championship that year. And can you imagine Otto's team with Tyler in the middle? We would have avoided FGCU by being #1 or #2 seed....That would be 3 deep tourney runs in less than 10yrs....I know these are hypotheticals but Austin's team was humming before he got sick and Otto's team hummed all year until FGCU.... You could throw in Wright's wrist too. That stuff happens though. His downfall was the Cameron, Domingo classes of '12 and '13. He almost pulled it off with the '14 class which was great on paper but then Isaac never developed, White got hurt, Campbell got hurt and never became what we wanted, and JTIII never evolved his game to fit his talent. His downfall was refusing to offer Josh Hart. Had he offered Hart, he might very well still be our coach.

The guy is clearly a good coach. He turned around the team very quickly after Keno Davis. This year has definitely been a step back for them, but they are also in a transition year. Providence is lucky to have Cooley - it's hard to imagine that they could draw a better coach with as much dedication to the school.

Cooley is a good coach and always seems to get his players to play hard for him. He lost 2-3 starters last year and has a young team this year. Like all young teams they will be inconsistent for much of the year, but I would bet they will win a few games that no one expects them to win, and probably lose a few they should win. I don't think they will be a tournament team this year, but if all those young kids stay in the program and develop like most players do under Cooley, they are going to be pretty good for a few years to come.

For the record I’ve been very happy with PE, the recruits and his coaching philosophy so far. My question is: Has anyone say behind the bench? Does he curse out the kids? Does seems to hold them accountable. I remember him chewing out dereckson last year and Akinjo this year. I love that!
I just was interested in knowing does he curse? Yell a lot? Any insight?

bump i understand he is responsible for developing Govan and MD last year ... they made strides and i also understand that our bench isnt that strong but considering the fact that we were able to bag freshman of the week for consecutive weeks we cant say that our team is weak... I guess PE is good for developing players but still lack X and O's in coaching... that Creighton team isnt as strong as it has been the past few years and we still lost ....

Coach Ewing took 5 freshmen in the last 2 seasons -- none of whom were top 50 recruits - and put ALL of them on the BE All Frosh Team. Coach also got Govan onto the First Team All Big East. And he got the team to 9-9 in his second year, despite some gut wrenching losses. He played the young kids, right through all their mistakes, and stuck with them.
Someone should be giving some kind of Award to Coach Patrick Ewing!
Wonder what his kids think when they get to MSG and see his jersey hanging from the rafters!?!?!?!

Excellent post.
But the only award Patrick wants is awarded Saturday night in the Garden.

Bump for Coach Ewing's continued effort and results on the recruiting trail. Congrats on signing JUCO Galen Alexander!
If Coach adds a pure shooter with 3PFG expertise who can hold their own defensively, and assuming no transfers/departures, he will have put together a complete Big East roster in basically 2 years of recruiting.
Amazing job. Just amazing.
With this momentum and hopefully some better results next year, I have no doubt that Coach Pat will be able to consistently sign Top 75 talent starting next year, with the occasional Top 25 ringer to put us over the top.
