Rooting for the guy to succeed, but he looks overmatched after Year One. Not seeing much upside in a guy that’s about to be 56 and hasn’t recruited well in a year. Consistently got outcoached in the second half of games. Any chance he has a job if JT2 isn’t still alive?

Your post might be the single dumbest post in the history of Hoyatalk and that's saying a lot considering all the idiotic things posted on here on a daily basis. To be clear I'm not calling you dumb because i don't know you. Just your post!

I’ll give this ridiculous question a real answer. The growth of Marcus Derrickson and Jessie Govan are two very clear pieces of evidence.
How about the fact that his system made this team a pretty decent offensive team despite almost no talent in the backcourt? It’s already a clear upgrade over JTIII’s offense. I will concede to you that the defense was disappointing.

It's ludicrous to claim he hasn't recruited well. He went from JT3's stud 2017 recruiting class of Antwan Walker who likely would have decommitted if Ewing hadn't come on board to having two players on the all-freshman team, internet superstar Mac McClung, 4-star recruit and likely elite college defensive stallwart in Leblanc, and Grayson Carter who looks aight too. Just because we haven't hit on like four five-star recruits so far in no way means that he has been bad at recruiting
His second half coaching is a serious source of concern, but I'm not entirely sure that that rests entirely on him. It's pretty common for young teams to start hot but falter later in games since they aren't adjusted to the faster style of play and intense requirements from college level athletics. This team was dependent on two freshman in Pickett and Blair to majorly contribute. And thats not even mentioning how difficult it is for a team to perform consistently when they effectively have no point guard, but thats another point entirely.
I hate getting into apologetics, but your points are legitimately unfair. Rome wasn't built overnight, and neither will Ewing's Empire.

This was not a young team in today’s college basketball, not even close.

Govan and Derrickson had their best years. Pickett and Blair(!) went from struggling to get on the floor against our joke of a non conference schedule to all freshman honors out of the whole league. We took a team with no depth and beat Seton Hall and won on the road against Butler. Even with our poor guard play, we had more ball movement than I've seen out of Georgetown in years.
Listen, I'm as mad about the end of the season as anyone. And a year ago this time, I was leading the charge against Ewing being hired. But he got the most out of this year. And I think he's going to get us back to where we expect to be.

Some evidence that he is and some troubling signs that he may not be. This year was encouraging and very disappointing at the same time; a mixed bag.
Year 2 better show improvement; by then this team will be over 50% PE chosen, and likely the two best players won’t be among those 50%. In other words, no excuses about the backcourt, etc. This will be PE’s team.

Be patient. Look where the bar was set at the beginning of the season. I think we cleared it and then some. JT3 left a dumpster fire. Pat needs 3-4 years to right the ship. He will recruit his players.

I agree there are LOTS of red flags with Ewing. Let’s see what he can do in season 2 with some new blood. But I thought he would be courting high-elite recruits. His in-game coaching to date is abominable. Sorry, no way to sugarcoat it.
He did a great job with the bigs, but that’s a very small fraction of a very ugly whole picture. Nobody on the team defends. Mulmore had one great defensive sequence yesterday, and otherwise our D was utterly forgettable. Those fullcourt traps were comical.
If that’s a bad athletic matchup (and I think it was), then you better go out and add some elite athletes, particularly in the backcourt. McClung is a start, but he absolutely must bring in one more elite guard or this cycle was a bust. Adding only McClung might not even equal out the losses of Dickerson and Mulmore.
This season was exactly as bad as predicted,no better. We played a cupcake schedule, beat nobody of note, blew a ton of leads, ran the same crap end-of-game play with Pavlovian results in every last-second situation, lost five straight to end the season and don’t look to have addressed our massive backcourt issues via recruiting. Ewing gets a generous C for Year 1 from me.

I think we would be much better if we paid players to come. 😉

I bow to those basketball-savvy enough to be able to distinguish with precision demonstrably weak talent from poor coaching--particularly based on one year of evidence. From where I sit, this team is just not good enough to point fingers at the coaching. If anything, the consistency in the manner with which we lose is indicative of the same players making the same mistakes and physically wilting down the stretch. PE is in the best position to know what his players are capable of, and the "failure to make adjustments" is likely recognition that they are already doing what they do best.

Guess it depends upon expectations. For those who read his playing resume and expected it to immediately transfer into a quality college coach, there is reason for disappointment. For those who saw a 15 year NBA assistant and assumed that meant he would immediately grasp all facets of the college game there could be disappointment. You can clearly pick apart Ewing's performance this year and find plenty to bit** about, but that is true of most coaches. Check out any fan board after a loss and you will find no shortage of expert critiques about why the team lost and how the coach screwed up.
Ewing inherited a flawed roster, with no one outside of the two bigs who could consistently hit a shot--from any range. He had no depth at any position, relied upon 2 freshmen for major scoring contributions, and had to play several guards/wings with poor handles. It was not his team at the outset and yet he made them competitive, while demonstrating a completely unexpected commitment to recruiting throughout a frustrating season. He proved he can develop players--not everyone but several and it is not always the coach's fault if a player does not turn into a star. He deserves more time to see if he can take the next step with a roster filled with more players suited to the game he wants to play.

Tough crowd.
He worked with many of the same players that JT3 did to implement a faster style of play. Remember when JT3 abandoned it, probably because he realized that he didn’t have the team to run it? Pat stuck with it, and he did so without Pryor and Peak, two players who would have benefited from style of play. There is little wonder that the results were uneven.
He has recruited very well. He started so late that recruiting was difficult. The two players he brought in received all BE honors. Pickett was expected, but did anyone expect much from Blair when we got him. They played like freshmen, and that’s ok because they are.
So much said about the guards. Mosely and Johnson had a disappointing end of season. Everyone seems to focus on that. But anyone give credit for the development of Dickerson?About a month ago, I wouldn’t have blamed Ewing if he didn’t play him. Within the past couple of weeks, I wanted him in the game. The offense was so much better when he was in the game. His silly fouls really hurt. On balance, I have to give coaching staff big props for that.
In general he has the Hoyas playing with enthusiasm. It looks like the players are having fun. He’s working with the entire team. This is a huge plus.

The true time to give PE a coaching grade will be this time next year, folks. Not to regurgitate..but several of our players did show substantial improvement as the season progressed, which would normally be credited to the staff. We now run an offense that gives us a chance at geting good guards to come to Georgetown and , quite honestly is much more fun to watch than in recent years.
Defensively the team was goddawful...but so is the team's athleticism. Our two great bigs lack the tools to be good defenders (IMO) and as I've said before, the guards were the least talented I can remember, which goes back to the mid 70's. With no connections to the HS/AAU game, Patrick brought in at the last minute two guys who made the All Frosh team in the BE..so its not clear he "can't recruit".
I know that his loudest critics seem to be the diehards who are still upset Jt3 is gone..you know who you are. Unless we lose Marcus and Jessie, this team should be in the mix for the NCAA at this time next year...or I will be very disappointed. SO...plenty of evidence PE can coach, and some that he needs to improve upon..like any first year coach. Now..whether we should have hired a first year coach..another question for another day?

There is one thing that I think we can all readily agree on re: this year’s team: Ewing’s team was much more fun to watch and plays an uptempo style that is critical to recruiting and playing success moving forward.
I don’t disagree that he did a pretty good job with limited pieces, but I am very disappointed that with his name, our desperate needs and our new facility he hasn’t been able to lure an elite guard other than Mac into the fold. I have seen McClung twice this season, and I think he’s both very underrated and a potential college star. But we must have another option there. MUST. Neither Kaleb nor Jagan is an option as a legit second ball handler next season, which leaves you in one heck of a pickle with Mulmore and Dickerson leaving.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but we are currently looking at a likely downgrade in the ballhandling category next season. Let that sink in after watching the most TO-prone GU team in decades.

The thing that surprises me from the more severe negative posts in here is that folks seem to think we had an NCAA-tournament type team this year. I never saw it.
Sure, we finished 15-15 and I would have liked a couple more wins. Make it 17-13 or 18-12. But either of those records would've left it a stretch to even make the NIT. I would've liked those records better to be sure, but I am certainly not bitterly disappointed in the final outcome compared to those results.
Last night's game also underscored the challenge Ewing faces. Our two best playmakers in Derrickson and Govan can't create their own plays. Ewing actually tried to have them do it last night. He gave the ball a number of times to each on the perimeter and they dribbled a bit and set up a shot. With an off season of development Derrickson might be able to set up his own. But last night really showed me that we need a play making guard to help this team get much further.
Also, for those who are unhappy, it's easy to forget that Ewing arrived relatively late, once the season was over. He had almost no time to recruit, was already behind on this incoming 2018 class, and inherited a turbulent situation. Now I hope he can take steps forward in the off season.

Rest assured we will not be looking at that. Our worst TO% offenders in conference play: Mulmore: 34.5% Mosely: 28.3% Dickerson: 23.4% Johnson: 23.0% Then it falls off a cliff to JP at 19% Dickermore is every bit as bad as Mosely. They are the definition of warm bodies as "seniors." LeBlanc has to be disastrous, Pickett and Blair (and even Mosely and Johnson) regress, and Mac put up TO numbers worse than every freshman guard in the past 10 years for us to be worse than this year. That's without another late PG pickup which I'm sure the staff is working on right now. There's this idea that "at least Dickermore can handle the ball." They can't. They just are the most PG-like thing we had.

Mike Vaccaro, Harvey Aaraton and other NY Knick beatwriters have been a part of the Patrick Ewing PR machine all year. They have all written numerous fluff pieces (all with numerous Jeff Van Gundy quotes) about what a great coach Patrick is. Now it is up to Ewing to turn the positive PR into top recruits and on-court performance.
