The reference in the article to Ewing not being willing to play Maryland is disturbing. No further explanation offered and hope it is just referring to this season. No need to go backwards. That feud is done, why resurrect it now?

Good, balanced, honest article.

I seem to recall a stretch of 8 years where we went to three Final Fours and 5 Elite Eights without playing Maryland...

Can someone explain why anyone on the up and up needs more than one phone?

Can someone explain why anyone on the up and up needs more than one phone? One could be for work, one could be personal, and then, of course, the exclusive for "my players" phone. Duh.

As additional handicaps, Ewing is considered honest and unlikely to cheat to get players; he’s too demanding to countenance slackers and too old-fashioned to do the “I’m hip” backflips of some coaches. “I’m not a social media guy,” he says.
This says it all about modern CBB. A coach "unwilling to cheat" and being "unwilling to tolerate slackers" operates under a handicap. Sad but true.
And this business about being unable to "identify" with young kids -- I just look to Walker, Dickenson, Blair, Sodom and Pickett. Five commits/recommits to a coach hired in April...
Again, lets wait to see how PE does. The program was near rock bottom for a top level D1 league team; had a shambles of a roster left after JT2's firing; and a lousy reputation first for post-season flops and then simply losing. It will take any coach at a D1 program two of his own classes to turn things around.
GU is a complicated place with the JT2 legacy, and PE has pros and cons like almost any coach. I will wait to pass judgment, and refuse to get caught up in the echo-chamber narratives so prevalent in the media these days.

Many work things can be handled later, he is showing his players they are a priority. Does he need a separate phone, probably not, it's more of an symbolic gesture. It doesn't hurt anyone, so what's the harm?

I don't find that odd at all, actually.

Wouldn't that be "the work phone"? You don't need a separate physical device for any of these things. Is this really what we are reduced to? Anyway, many people in my office have two phones...a work phone and a personal phone. One is work property with a number issued by the company and potential restrictions on use. One is a personal phone, with a number, contacts, pictures and such, that a person might have had for a decade and they don't want to change. It is pretty common. As for the "my players" phone, are we complaining about players have special access to him, even if its just optics for players and/or recruits (i.e., he is not an aloof hall of famer that doesn't personally care about his players)? It could be a carry over from the NBA, where players might want to reach an assistant coach with a dead stripper, pot arrest, etc. issue. Hopefully that is not an issue with our players, but the fact that players can reach him whenever is some kind of bad thing? hm

You're putting up a straw man of "he cares about his players how is that bad". I literally don't understand the logic behind carrying around three physical phones, charging three physical phones, keeping track of three different physical phones.
I understand separation of concerns and why you might want to firewall secure vs unsecure or work vs personal, do not understand why players demands a physical firewall from "work".

So this moves from the realm of solid speculation to fact. Or did we already know this?

So when it's something we like it's called fair and balanced these days? :-)
I think the podcast posted offered a lot more detail and a lot more reason for concern. Recruiting is about relationships and the sooner Ewing gets that the better.
