I believe Georgetown should remove the gray from the blue and gray. It's offensive. And, while you are at, take down that statue in front of Healy. That guy started a university that excluded African Americans for about 170 years. And dig up all those Jesuits who taught there during those years. In fact, it's offensive to even think a university with this baggage even continuing its existence. Georgetown, itself, offends me. Whoa! Slow down there, Ed. The only truly offensive color is orange.

This is at once very on point and a great reminder of the brilliant comedy of which today's SNL is almost completely devoid.

Imo The debate over monuments is a side dish to muddy the waters and force people into their partisan corners. Trump normalizing bigots and racists is the real story... Excellent point. Though the backlash to some of the monuments being removed makes me think that it was more "normalized" than I had thought. Trump, it seems, makes it a more acceptable way of thinking and being for those that already felt the way they clearly do. Looking to Trump and feeling validity or legitimacy for nearly any group should be enough to make one reconsider. The monuments became an issue because a bunch of racists and bigots (who know what they signify) chose to highlight, and protest their removal. The noise we hear now is in response to that action. The majority of Americans don't know the context by which these statues were enacted so when they look at them they probably think, cool statue. They're tired of being told what to think, how to think, what's acceptable etc... They just want to be left alone. Black Americans might, but on the list of grievances this would prob be number 1,000,093. The point is this wasn't on the front burner until Spencer/Anglin and now Trump put it there. For the WH/Trump it's easier to defend statues than his bigoted rhetoric. It also fits into his narrative that whites/white culture are under attack. He's playing us. Trump himself has said previously he's for removing from public spaces certain items from Civil War era. You think he really cares about statues!!?? lol Truly believe the majority of people don't care about statues, but it's being used as a wedge issue. They probably looked at the polling numbers and decided this is a better battle for them than defending bigots. Who really cares about statues when the biggest symbol of racism is Panderer in Chief in the White House....

Conservatives: Blacks should just get over slavery. It was hundreds of years ago, enough already
Also Conservatives: Don't touch our Civil War monuments or we'll storm the capitol
Conservatives: We're just honoring our History and heritage. Why are you attacking our history and heritage?
Also Conservatives: How come there's Black history Month? Hispanic Heritage Month? Is that really necessary, we're all Americans.
Conservatives: Millennials and their participation trophies! No more participation trophies snowflakes, to the winner goes the spoils.
Also Conservatives: No, not those participation trophies! Those are to be celebrated at State Houses, and the Capitol.
So while you talk about slippery slopes... I hear on RWM Lincoln was a Republican, don't think that's the side he would be fighting on...

I think I agree with you.
That said, how about we take down all statues of anyone who participated ina traitorous insurrection against the Union?
It is a hard and fast line not subject to misinterpretation.

It is a hard and fast line not subject to misinterpretation. Agree with most of what you say, particularly of the leaders of that insurrection. However, I can see leaving the "war dead" memorials, but moving them to cemeteries where they belong and not in the public squares.

I lived in Athens, Georgia for nine months. Not a week went by without somebody mentioning the Civil War (or the War between the States). Everywhere else I have lived (mainly in Las Vegas), nobody mentioned the Civil War except in American history classes. The culture down South is a little different than the rest of the country concerning that aspect.

Who did Trump mean when he said "very fine people" were marching with white supremacists? "I'd ask you to ask the president," Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Tom Bossert says on This Week ABC.

Did the government somehow impinge upon the freedom of speech of the white supremacists and Nazis you are defending here? I'm not understanding the freedom of speech implications here. Policing issues, crowd control, yes. Freedom of speech, no.
