This is one of the few times I would get the input from incoming recruit. Akinjo wanted to be a Hoya, Johnson did not. If James wants the keys, then he gets first crack at it until he crashes the car. Johnson only comes if Akinjo is okay with it, Period! I'm pretty sure he signed because of the inside track to start at the point from Day 1. Down the road, of course you recruit talent and let it work itself out. Like Pickett last year, there was a gaping hole at his position and he wanted to fill it. Wasn't McClung told he'd be the starting lead guy too? I'm pretty sure he was told that there a lot of minutes to be had at both guard positions. Lead guard day 1. Doubt it.

Xavier Johnson had his chance he dropped us. Akinjo is the priority.

I know during his 1st media day HoyaRon asked him "how the search for a lead guy was going?" PE started talking about having a guy but recruiting rules didn't allow him to talk about him yet, turns out Ron was asking about the current team not a new recruit.. Plus when that coach told McClung he was going to Gtown to ride the bench in that early season tourney, McClung clearly told him he was going there to start.. The clip is in his thread.. My main point was I doubt PE would consult with a player before going after another player, sets a terrible precedent imo..

I remember him saying that but I hope he wouldn't promise him a starting spot

I mean, backcourt minutes are not going to be an issue for anyone that can dribble the basketball without kicking it out of bounds.

Clearly program success doesn't matter for him. If we didn't have Akinjo and Mac, I'm sure we'd be pushing for him.

I’d rather have class balance and shoot for a better guard for ‘19.

I think Johnson is a good player, and if Akinjo had not committed I think the Hoyas would be pushing hard for him now, but at this point I would think they would want more of a scoring/shooting guard if they are going to bring in another backcourt player this year. The one knock people had on Johnson was his ability to shoot the ball so he is more of a pass first PG and would need to sit behind Akinjo at this point. Timing is everything in recruiting. If he had picked Georgetown over Nebraska originally when it was down to the two of those schools there is a good chance the Hoyas don't pursue Akinjo like they did. At this point Johnson does not really fit for the Hoyas. I hope the young man finds a place where he gets a good opportunity.

I was including us in the "program success doesn't matter for him" statement. That is why we would be pushing for him because we could be reasonably successful even without success.

Credit where credit is due. Xavier Johnson has had a great start to his college career at Pitt. Great fit at Pitt!

How he got here: Johnson initially signed with Nebraska, but had second thoughts and asked for a release. Shortly after landing the Pittsburgh gig, Jeff Capel got Johnson on to campus for a visit and moved quickly to land him. This season: 16.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. Analysis: Quite possibly the most pleasant surprise of the freshman class, Johnson has been electric for a very young Pitt squad. He's shot the ball well, he's created, he's scored and he's set the tone for his teammates with his spirited play. He looks like a keeper and a great building block for Capel. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/bossi-s-best-zion-williamson-tops-initial-freshman-tracker

Back in play for the Hoyas as he entered the transfer portal - would've been a great get 3 years ago, now an even better get given his maturity and experience.

He has no maturity. Easiest pass of all passes.

He has no maturity. Easiest pass of all passes. You seem pretty sure on this. What have you seen/heard that this is true?
