Just got some inside info that it's going to be Screamy McScreamerson... Apologize but who? Hurley? I guess? That'd be cool, why not? I love the Ewing idea, but if we're not doing that, and can't get Shaka, let's do it. A life in hoop, with a pinch of maniac, what's not to love?

Me three. The whole anti-PE thing seems to hinge on (1) No college experience and (2) We could never fire him. With respect to (2), I think that's laughable at this point, but as to (1) what recruit isn't at least taking that phone call. There's still some brand left in our name, and there will always be another "Hurley" every year, but we only get one shot at moving forward in the right direction with a link to our past. In 5-6 years if a Hurley doesn't work out, going back to the well will just look like a cheap attempt to get headlines for a few days. I'm not and never have said he should be a shoo-in, but he certainly should have been #2 on any list with any obvious first choice. Hurley definitely does not feel like a first choice... I could support the hiring of Pat Ewing if he can convince the search committee of two things. He wants this to be a long term commitment and is not going to leave for the NBA after a few good seasons and he is committed to, and has a plan to, being a national recruiter. I could envision the staff consisting of guys with a proven ability to beat the bushes and to identify talent and then Patrick being the guy who comes in and closes the deal. His name recognition helps and he would have a really compelling story to tell recruits about his history with the program and the opportunities it has afforded him. He has shown the ability to make players better at the highest level and that is what will attract recruits to him and the program. The college game is about building a program/style that is attractive to recruits and then the ability to get the right players. He knows what works at the highest level and that is the way kids want to play now.

Would rather a young mid-major coach than Hurley... I'm not strongly for or against Hurley, but he's 44 and coaches in the A-10. I'm pretty sure he is a "young mid-major coach."

I think he is talking about ten years younger and from a lower level...a true diamond in the rough.

Yeah, talking more Jamion Christian/King Rice/etc type...I know Hurley is technically at a mid-major now but I just don't see him as being the best fit. The contrast in demeanor between him and III will be hilarious though.

My prediction is our next coach will be someone who has not been mentioned on this board. Though not an elite basketball program at this point in time, Georgetown is still a good program and I think we would all be surprised who might be coming out of the woodwork expressing interest. You mean SRD will be our next coach?! That would be amazingly appropriate. Possible. And bring like labeled recruits with him. Or, maybe a successful name coach that just wants a new gig.

Watching the Knicks v. Pistons game (don't ask) and they had a rather long discussion about Ewing and our head coaching position. Included a clip of Stan Van Gundy passionately advocating for Patrick - which isn't particularly surprising. He made a point of talking about how recruiting is mostly about kids being told that they can get to the league - and who better to tell them that than Patrick. Mike Breen also mentioned that he heard that Patrick really wants the job. For whatever that is worth. Not the I needed Stan, Breen and Clyde Frazier to push me in this direction, but I'd be very happy to see Patrick get the job. I think we mostly agree on the dynamics here: he has the requisite training and experience to be a good x's and o's guy; for 15 years he has been game planning for NBA teams with half the time to prepare that college coaches have; and has the work ethic to be out on the road grinding. And the fact that he didn't have to do any of that also says good things about his commitment and work ethic. There are legitimate questions about his transition to a head coaching position; to dealing with kids and to attracting guards to come here. That said, I've yet to see the candidate listed who didn't have as many questions as answers. Short of that candidate emerging, I'm in for Patrick. But not all - or even mostly - because of his attributes. I'm in because if there is an advantage that Georgetown has over all but a handful of schools it is our story. Our story is a unique story about family and legacy and toughness and that fact that all of that happened in a somewhat unlikely place. I hear and understand the call on this board to separate from the Thompson family and run things a bit more similarly to a standard NCAA high major program. But the truth is that we are not, and will not become, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA or UNC. We don't have the resources and we don't have systemic things in place to make that happen. So as a fan, I don't expect that. What I expect is sustainable success, with a few beautiful march runs thrown in there, and I expect to be committed and tied to the school and the program because of what makes us unique. Patrick helps keep and accentuate that story. We can somewhat easily dismiss both the positive and negative things we've heard from important hoops alumni - particularly during trying times. But wouldn't it be better to keep that family together? It's hard to imagine that a Ewing run program wouldn't bring together Mourning and Williams and Jackson and AI and Wallace and Jeff and Roy and Otto and all. I want to hear more about those guys coming back in the summer to run with the new guys. I want them at games. And I don't imagine we get those summer stories under Hurley or Pitino, etc.. Now I'm not advocating for giving up wins for a story. But I just don't see how a Danny Hurley program is so clearly more likely to be successful than a Ewing program. And a Hurley program lacks any of the uniqueness that makes us Georgetown. I have been on the fence, but you have convinced me.

The problem is it's become a tired story and for kids born in 2000 (which is where the upcoming high school seniors are standing), it's not as relevant as we might think. Legacy and toughness doesn't sell recruits, winning does. Georgetown has made it to two regionals in the last 20 years, and none in the last 10. If we continue to play the "you know, we were big in the 1980's" card, we will be no more relevant to today's prospects than Houston or UNLV. Remember, these kids never saw Patrick Ewing play, and where some of us remember a seven foot freshman walking proudly across campus, those kids see an old man with a few extra pounds sitting on the Charlotte bench. It's not about separating from the past but building new memories, and that's hard for Georgetown to do sometimes. The Ewing team is putting on the full PR press through his surrogates in the media and NBA coaching community, so if he is not the hired, and Jon Wallace and PE Ewing, Jr. become collateral damage, it will be interesting to see what reaction the new hire gets from both Thompson basketball generations.

And while many kids might have no idea who he was, the resultant media splash would get them up to speed quickly.

I honestly don't know what parts of the program alumni are on the same side anymore. I don't believe the "Alonzo got the board to vote out JT3" rumor, but Alonzo's public statement was a lot less deferential than I would have expected. Ewing basically started lobbying for the job before JT3 was fired. Are the Thompsons themselves really going to care if Ewing gets the job vs. Ed Cooley? I reread some of Shapiro's Thompson biography last week. A lot of people here were pretty incredulous that Reggie Williams was speaking out against JT3. Here's a quote from 1991 : "Similarly, Reggie Williams, Thompson's last all-American, hasn't had any contact with the program virtually since the day he graduated. When Williams was a free agent last winter after being dropped by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Chicago Bulls were ready to sign him until general manager Jerry Krause called Thompson and asked him to put in a good word for his former player. Thompson told Krause he couldn't do it because he hadn't spoken with Williams for three years. And Thompson and Williams are represented by the same attorney, David Falk."

I think the world of Ewing the player and was at Georgetown for his final year and then spent 6 years in New York watching him revitalize the Knicks. No argument about his toughness and on court leadership capabilities. But what separates him from any other career NBA assistant coach with no college experience? Just his Hoya legacy. How does that qualify him as a college coach. Seriously, I am trying to understand what evidence people are viewing to determine that he would be a good hire to lead the program. I think that he is a bigger question mark than almost any other candidate mentioned. I would like to believe that this could work out, but emotional investment aside, I just cannot understand the excitement other than again trying to retain the connection to the past greatness of the Hoya program.

I don't believe the "Alonzo got the board to vote out JT3" rumor That's probably a fair assumption, because it looks like Zo isn't a current member of the board. www.georgetown.edu/about/board-of-directorsI remember seeing his name on the 2014 document that showed JTIII's salary. Maybe he left the board between now and then?

I just thought it was a derisive nickname of which I was unaware. While it is a nickname, I think it is more humorous than derisive for Coach Rodney Turner, who coaches in the Kenner League and is quite entertaining on the sidelines: www.teamturnerbasketball.com/
