Thanks to Ray and Cornelio. I can see the reasons behind the departure, but I'm still a little disappointed to see them go. While I didn't see much of Cornelio, others said he was very skilled. And Ray was a much better player than most on this board gave him credit for.
Good luck to them.

I wish I could have seen more of Cornelio. I was looking forward to seeing him with another year's worth of muscle and practice.
Good luck to both.

Reed, I think, wasn't going to much time this year. This gives JT3 some schollies to work with, which, I have to say, is exciting.

I hate transfers too, but I think these are more of a reflection of JTIII's thus far successful desire to upgrade the talent on the team. Ray, in particular, didn't really fit with what we wanted to do - it's tough to have a guard who can't shoot in our offense. I actually developed a soft spot for him as a player based on his defense late in the year.
Guibunda is really a puzzle. I have no clue what happened there. Given our abject lack of size last season, it's perplexing that a top 100 recruit couldn't get a sniff of the court.
Best of luck to both players.

I'm somewhat discouraged/irritated about this right now, but that's just a long-held view on how transfers have corroded this program. Best wishes to both guys as they move on and find new schools. I think JT3's statement was classy and appropriate.

No loss.
Kinda explains the incessent recruiting over the last few weeks when we apparently had no space.....
I just hope all the new people pick up the offense quickly....

GU having kids transfer?? This NEVER happens. I'm numb to this and it's almost expected, but in regard to these two Transfers--they make more sense then in the past. Guibunda punched his ticket out the minute he skipped out on Kenner Games and taking his offseason work seriously. I know that he took a trip home to see his folks, but there were many instances that we read of him being in attendance for Kenner games and then splitting early, and word was he didn't view Basketball as being too important--which is fine but not if you are getting your education paid for by being a basketball player. School comes first but at this level you better take it seriously and Cornelio didn't.
Another telling point was how the kids on the team would talk up every FR player BUT Guibunda. We heard about Jeff, Roy, Tyler, and Jonathan, but Cornelio never got a mention from anyone on the team.
Ray Reed did a nice job and really showed improvement this year, but I'm guessing he saw handwriting on the wall with Hoyas signing 2 guards, and already having a commitment for a lead guard next year. Throw in Wallace and Cook for this upcoming season and next in case of Jonathan, and you don't have many minutes available. I think Reed could've been an outstanding defensive guard in a Role, but my guess is he wanted to play more which is fine and I wish him and Cornelio the best.
For those of us who long for the "old days" of CBB, this week sure slaps you into reality. Everyone and their brother applying to NBA for at least a "look" and it seems like Transfers at schools have grown in numbers as well.
I'd like to think this will be the exception, but in today's game, it's common place and expected.

Wow! I have to strongly disagree with you on that one. Anytime a scholarship athlete [departs], it's a failure of the program and a failure for the University as a whole. Edited.

Wow! I have to robustly disagree with you on that one. Anytime a scholarship athlete [departs], it's a loss for the credibility of the program and for the institution as a whole. JT3 says that we support these guys, which makes it sound like it was their decision. This program is a credible program and is being treated as such on the national level. We have an EXCELLENT staff to thank for that, and it is nice to see things looking up on the Hilltop. The phrase Jersey referred to was previously edited.-Admin

It didn't say they were kicked off, it said they were transfering.
I don't view transfers as "bad". I view people getting kicked off for walking around school with firearms, getting busted multiple times for drug possesion, and simply giving up on schoolwork as bad and embarassing to institution and program.

From the FLHoya Recap Archives (yeah, there's a room with a vault buried somewhere beneath Jupiter, Florida ): The GU-Grambling game that opened up the 2003-2004 season Reed--A quieter game than Israel. My new favorite Hoya now that Drew Hall left didn't quite show as much explosion as we saw against Israel, but I thought his defense was pretty good. He got most of the second half minutes as a 2G with Causey at point. Here, there's some work to do. Reed isn't there yet in the halfcourt set in the traditional sense...I still think he could thrive if he played in the context of the run and gun, cause he's darn quick and can break people down. I came away from that Israel Select game I referred to really impressed with Ray, especially the defense. Probably liked him because, like Drew Hall my previous favorite player, I always thought he got ragged on too much for some mistakes when he was shouldering too big a load for his own good. I always liked to see Drew make big plays (Providence, UNC), and I was real happy to see Ray play so well in the BET game against UConn this year. Wherever he ends up, I think he'll do well. The morale is--the "little guy" players I like always seem to leave. So, uh, I mean, somebody might wanna go hide Jonathan Wallace in the Panic Room or something. ;D (kidding!)

Someone needs to update the recruiting master list. This means we have two spots open for next year, 2 for 06/07, and one more for 08. You've got to think we have a line on quite a few other recruits after the Rivers signing.

I'm a bit disappointed to see these two guys go, since they were so early in their development. That said, it's understandable given that neither was recruited by JTIII, and Guibunda couldn't seem to find his way off the end of the bench with a map and a tow-rope. As for Ray, I felt like he often was one of the only guards who could keep up with the faster guards in the Big East. Obviously, I'm a bit excited to see who JTIII replaces them with, but at this point, I'm still not entirely convinced that the replacements will necessarily be a step up.
In any event, best of luck to them. Now, someone find elvado and bring him to this thread, because I feel the need for at least one person to express the "They are dead to me now" sentiment. Even if only for the sake of appearances.

I already PM'd Wilson and Dan with the adjusted matrix. I'll PM DFW as well.
Jersey, just so's ya know, I think Dan and I have copies of the matrix, but I doubt Buffalo does.

WOW! I'm speechless. You kind of expected it. But when a program such as GU moves in such perfected silence, it is still a little jolting when you hear about transfers. Reed was a defensive role player, with limited offensive game to contribute to the JTIII offensive system. Plus, with all these guards coming in, the writing was on the wall. Guibunda, no suprise there. Maybe he was just overhyped. But usually, when guys are overhyped, they at least get some playing time. You rarely see a highly-touted kid be the last man on the bench, particularly when his position has the least depth on the team. I guess we will never know.
After saying all that, I'm all ready for the Josh Thornton, Marc Egerson, Octavius Spann, and Jesse Sapp show. Not to mention the westside connection of Ashanti Cook and Brandon as a senior leaders, Roy Hibbert's, Jon Wallace's, and Tyler Crawford's improvement, and the almighty Jeff Green's prominence. Add to the fact that we have a great tactician, coach, and leader in JTIII and his coaching staff. Man, bring on the Hoya Paranoia!!!

Perhaps this has already been addressed, but does this mean:
1. Wallace gets his schollie? 2. Owens returns?

Perhaps this has already been addressed, but does this mean: 1. Wallace gets his schollie? 2. Owens returns? 1) Because Wallace's ship would extend past next year, I think it is still more of a question of a) whether he was promised it and b) how many we are looking to take in '06. 2) In contrast, if Owens doesn't return now, either he didn't want to, or III felt it was best to move on. But scholarship wise, it's a free scholarship since '05 recruiting is basically done. One thing to note is that if we had kept 13 scholarship players and Wallace, I think we would have had to cut a walk-on from possible play. I think roster sizes are limited to 16 dressing, and with Izzo, Beal, Kilkenny-Diaw and Wallace, that would've put us at 17. Obviously, it isn't a reason to make a decision, but this probably means those players still suit up next year. (Unless it is 15)
