Rodney Pryor (grad transfer) commits to Georgetown

I know there has been a lot written about him in other threads....but staff is going after him aggressively. They seem to be holding the last scholly for him.

Interesting. I guess that means we don't have a shot at Taurean Thompson? 

Which I don't really mind. If we land Pryor next year can be a big year for us. We don't have that much time left till our group of supposed super freshmen graduate.

If we got him, we'd actually have 6 scholarship guards on the roster. That's a pretty remarkable change at least.

Would really be happy if we got Pryor. I know Kansas has come in late and we are up against some other good schools like Gonzaga. He seems to be a player that can be a stat stuffer type of player - he is listed as a guard but he is 6'5" and pulled down 8 boards a game! If he can use that size to play defense, this team would get a major boost and be among the favorites once again in the BE.

One year of eligibility remaining.
Leaving that schollie open doesn't help at all.
Pryor would be a contributor right away.
Let's hope Staff can get it done.

I always love how we as a fan base always take the position of the staff and never the prospect. Right now Pryor is in the position of power. He has worked his tail off and because of the rules is afforded this luxury of being recruited all over again but at a much higher level. You have to look at it from a courting standpoint and that the conversations between the staff and him are a getting to know each other steps, and the visit will be the major courting period as they both try to decide whether to commit to a 1 year relationship. But don't get it twisted, Pryor is the one being wooed here and is in a position of power. If he doesn't here and is reassured that he's going to get exactly what he's looking for in this 1 year relationship, he will move on and look elsewhere. 

You have to believe he's looking for a place he can maximize his playing time and abilities at a high level which probably means an opportunity to start, which he has earned the right to request that. I actually think he could start for us next season because he brings a unique set of qualifications to this current Hoyas roster including style of play, skill set, physical and mental maturity. I also think that the other schools recruiting him can provide him the same luxuries. Gonzaga is a team where Pryor would start on the wing and could all but guarantee him an opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament next year.  For all those reasons, unless he is bowled over by what the staff is offering, I see his recruitment stretching to end of April and maybe even early May. I also wouldn't be surprised if more schools don't get involved now that the season is completely over and we are in full blown recruiting mode. We already see Kansas sniffing around. A school like the Villanova could get involved as they have 2 open scholarships and are a guard heavy program. Based on what other recruits decide there could be a dominos effect that land in 5th year recruits like Pryor's lap. 

But don't get it twisted, it's in no way up to the staff to just bring him in if he can contribute.

Did anyone say he was definitely coming or that it was up to us? I think the question was whether we should keep recruiting him, and I think the general consensus is absolutely since he's good and we were terrible this year and need more good players.

100% true Hoyas4Ever, and there will be a serious battle on this one. As others have said, there is minimal downside, with the very real chance to have a considerable impact next year. Fingers crossed. Glad that the staff even is in the mix and is getting a visit. Strike while the iron is hot!!!

I agree with this. I just think we should continue to pursue him, and if it works out, great. I am certainly not counting on getting any graduate transfers, I don't even think it's likely, but if somebody like Pryor wants to come, I'm happy to welcome him.

With recruiting, the players always have the stronger position if they are well regarded (and nearly all of the recruits we go after are well regarded enough to get interest from similarly situated programs). College recruiting is one of the rare instances where adults cater to the whims and desires of teenagers. It's certainly not an easy job being a recruiter.

Maybe, but I would rather see them try to do something about it than throw their hands up in the air. I would also note that since the new assistants joined, they have recruited Campbell, Peak, Johnson, and Mosely. Clearly, it would have been better if the staff hit one of their many 2015 guard targets, but they didn't.

The high school class of 2012, which only had Cameron, was also a huge whiff, but that was before we had Sutton and Hardy. But yeah, JT3 did not put together a strong class in 2013. I don't really have a problem with the classes of 2014 and 2015, and would have liked more than one 2016 recruit, but I think Mosely will be a solid player for us. Even though we don't currently have the scholarship room, I think 2017 and 2018 will need to be big years for the staff. All the more reason why this coming season will be so important.

I disagree. Plenty of programs use transfers effectively, including Miami, Louisville, and Creighton. I think it is a really important tool. Obviously, this year the transfers will allow us to strengthen the guard position relatively quickly after a disappointing season. But, if you look beyond that, it is a tool that may help us achieve class balance. We have a large class graduating in 2018. Saving a couple of scholarships for transfers (presuming a solid core of recruits come in) would help provide experience for some teams that will be young otherwise.
