Must win. Creighton beat Butler last night too so they'll be feeling good. LJ has to find a way to stay on the floor and we have to keep Watson out of the paint. This likely won't happen so I would expect to see a heavy dose of Jessie in the middle as he's more mobile in the PnR and can protect the rim better than BJ. Oh it'd also be nice if Ike got going

We need to come out with full intensity, step on them early. No reason to lose this one at home if we take care of the ball and play some real defense.

Practicing at Loomis Chafee right now Pretty awesome that my college basketball team is practicing at my high school. Feel like that must be a good sign going into the Creighton game.

Big fellas stay on the ground, and just stick your hands high in the air to impede the driving player' view of the rim. Stop slapping at the ball. Look, you are 7' tall. Stand your ground!

This rematch is going to be interesting. Will JTIII be able to figure out any way to slow down Watson? I honestly don't see how. Maybe stick Johnson on him the entire game, trot out the box and one; anything would be better than watching a repeat of the last game. One thing is for sure, Creighton is going to guard Govan out to the 3 point line this time around.

This might be a good thing for us if they guard Govan out to the three point line, can anybody say alley-oop to Copeland. This maybe all Copeland needs to get his shot going in the right direction. In fact, Derrickson may want a piece of that action as well.

And on the offensive end try moving towards the basket when you have a clear path to the rim. Try doing it just once, just for me, if you screw up you may get bailed out and sent to the line for a foul shot. It's better then a turn over!!!

We have to outscore creighton. That was our only chance in the first game, and it took a bunch of tough 3s in the first half to keep us competitive with them until the final minutes. I don't think going zone would be that helpful - Watson will still dribble penetrate against the zone, the same way Gibbs often did for Uconn on saturday. I think both teams will get lots of good looks - it will be a matter of who does a better job of hitting their open 3s.
Defensively, the thing that would help the most is if Hayes and Govan can play good verticality-based defense - no jumping, swatting, or reaching over the top of the interior shooter. On the occasions when our D has been at its "best" this year, Hayes/Govan have done a decent job of this. But then they too often go back to leaping and swatting
I would also love to see one complete game in which none of our defenders leave their feet when a 3 point shooter pump fakes, allowing the shooter to then jump into the defender to draw the cheap 3 shot foul (also known as "pulling the villanova"). That play has replaced "inbound the ball under your own basket by bouncing it off Lubick/Smith's back for an easy basket" as my most frustrating hoya mistake play.

It was a straight up dumpster fire early in the season, but it's at least passable now--the guys are certainly working way harder on the rotations. It can still be defeated by good offense--Xavier ran a lot of great overloads, not all of which cashed in--but generally we're at least making teams work harder. It definitely slowed down the Villanova game in the second half. Now, against UConn two bad things happened. First, UConn hit two long threes in a row in short succession against it in the first half, so we went away for a while. Second, after the half, despite their poor overall shooting, they could still attack the zone with a simple screen of one of the top guys to get the PG into the lane and draw a foul on our centers***. That can't stop quick guards thing will get you one way or another. In the end, it still comes down, like you said, to better discipline in our backline defense. Govan is getting better over time, but Hayes appears to be back to old habits. (***Or dish for a score...My Stars, our game after this is Providence. Ben Bentil's gonna score 50 points on dunks from Kris Dunn no-look passes.)

He is shooting better this year but if we let him get into the lane it will be, as FL Hoya suggests, a Bentil dunkfest. Maybe just sit back in a real soft, packed in zone and challenge their entire team to beat us with outside shooting. They certainly could whip us that way, but they are not an especially good outside shooting team, and Dunn is so tough to deal with when he attacks the lane.

In fact, Derrickson may want a piece of that action as well. I don't know about that. I think Derrickson, Hayes, Govan and Cameron would have a nice "worst vertical" battle. I mean I love Marcus, but has he even dunked in a game yet? I don't recall seeing one. And Govan seems to just barely get high enough somehow.

Limit wide open threes for them; rebound; and limit turnovers.

Home games are pretty much "must win" games if we want to make the tournament. It felt like we gave away the game at Creighton. No excuses for letting that happen at Verizon.

This should be a game the Hoyas win if they want to be considered a bubble team. Home game against a common opponent needs to be won. I think this will come down to number of possessions for us, both teams will be able to score, the difference will be turnovers. The Hoyas must avoid turnovers and wasted possessions. That is how Creighton can beat you.
Watson is going to make his plays, I would like to see us at least try a zone or I feel like we could easily have another foul parade on our hands. It would be great if Campbell could bring his uptempo game and shot with him, make Watson expend energy on defense, that could help to slow him down some.
I see a tight game that needs to be won in the final 4 minutes. DSR to the rescue.
