Maybe it's just me but I feel like Derrickson has subtly changed his game a little bit this season to where he is now more of a presence in the paint. The past two years it seems like he was hovering on the perimeter most of the time hunting for a 3 point shot but now he is making more of an effort to be around the basket. Possibly also a function of the new offensive system, but regardless... I like how he's playing right now. He's got impressive strength and size and that's where the team needs him.

It's cause he didn't have the hook shot last year. He basically had no inside game last year. This year he has a go to move that can be shot against anyone.

Love the way he seemingly draws a foul every time they feed the ball to him down low. If he can make a few of those into and-ones he'll be a real head ache for some smaller teams this season.

I think Pat's definitely focusing on keeping him in there on the offensive end. His rebounding and fouls drawn rates are up -- though it's tough to tell at this point whether that has more to do with the quality of the opposition. Something that's more related (probably) is his 2PFG v 3PFG attempts. FR year: 60% of his FGA from 3 SO year: 53% of his FGA from 3 this yr: 40% of his FGA from 3 It'll be interesting to see how that changes as the year progresses. As for Jessie... his 3FGA have remained fairly steady since he arrived. Between 80 and 85% of his shots are from 2, including so far this year. One more thing about Marcus/Jessie 3s. In the first couple of games, it looked like they were really focused on getting 1 of them to finish the secondary break by stopping at the top of the key and looking for a 3. Maybe that was coincidental, but I really liked that look. They're both above average shooters for their positions, and that's a shot that we can get regularly before we have to set up in the half court.

I think the main issue that kept Marcus out of the paint on offense last year was fouling. Early in the year he would try and post up smaller players and they would flop and draw charges on him every single game. I think he just got frustrated that the refs never let him play in the post and figured it wasn't worth it.

Not to be a smartass, but it probably also has a lot to do with the fact that we're playing a bunch of teams that are completely undersized. Maybe it's a deliberate aspect of his role in Ewing's offense, or maybe it's just due to the fact that he's often significantly larger than every 4 who has been assigned to guard him this year and we're just exploiting mismatches.

Except against similar competition last year (USC, Howard, Coppin) he made 2 two-point field goals...total.

Edit for additional context: He played 13, 21, and 18 minutes in those games you mentioned (plus only 10 in the Maryland game), and he didn't play in Arkansas St, Oregon, Wisconsin, or Oklahoma St games.

Well, he IS our second leading scorer and second leading rebounder, so he may have done just a smidge more than merely fill out our starting five.

Power moves inside...3s from the perimeter...take a couple of charges...box out and rebound strong...play like they're holding your family hostage...

Whomever we have played - how can our SECOND most productive player be the guy just filling out the starting FIVE?? Hey, we absolutely need Doc to consistently produce if we are going to have any success from here on out.

Derrickson has no choice. I'm sure he knows this.

Hey, we absolutely need Doc to consistently produce if we are going to have any success from here on out. Well, i think aggy is basing his assessment on Doc's 1st 2 years here. He has been an enigma. Talent was always there. With Ewing here, i was excited to see what Derrickson would do with a coach who is good with big man/inside players. We saw today how much he means to this team.

Doc was certainly inconsistent his first 2 years. But suggesting that his expected contribution is nothing more than giving us a 5th starter on the court was over the top.
