Agree with others that Tre played somewhat out of control against Radford, with little effort on defense or ball movement. My problem is that this is really a continuation of how he played much of last year and over the summer--as a shoot-first PG. To be fair, it may simply be that his mindset is that of a SG and he has a better outside shot than anyone other than DSR. It's just that this is not his role on this team and I was hoping all summer that that the coaches would reinforce the message that his key to playing time is as a quick PG. Against Maryland, I would allow Peak to handle the ball more to give DSR time and energy to focus on his shot and defense. Tre can come in for the jolt of energy he provides but only if he is willing to do more than shoot.
My biggest concern about this game is the size of Maryland. We got killed on the boards by a much smaller team. Although I am just speculating, I believe that Radford was the first of many times this year when the team will miss Akoy and his aggressiveness under the basket--not as a scorer but on defense and rebounding.
Finally, I hope that the coach will consider some minutes for Trey Mourning in a meaningful game. This summer he showed enough potential and dedication that he should be given an opportunity, particularly in games where other players ahead of him in the rotation are sleepwalking. Although that characterization would not apply to Govan or Brad Hayes last game, there were times in the first half when Copeland and Derrickson could not rebound, shoot or defend. Hard to imagine that he did not merit at least a look.

Rebound, rebound, rebound! No excuses. Rebound the ball offensively and defensively. Rebound from the last game. And rebound from the lack of effort. Who is going to light a fire under this team, before it's too late?

Reads like Dakich didn't think the team was prepared on Saturday.. Or we just aren't that good. Which based on Game 1, I'd agree. The question is, how quickly can we get better? And do we maximize the potential of the players on the team?

How can you tell anything after just one game? The only thing I can tell is that we looked awful, there were no bright spots outside of maybe Hayes showing that he might actually know how to play basketball, and that we lost a game that on paper we should've won easy. In theory we had the more talented players top to bottom, but the best dude on the court on that day was not in a Hoya uniform.

I expect a much better showing from the Hoyas. Unless we're experimenting with a new defensive technique that discourages bending your knees, everyone better have had a floor-slapping couple of days.
It wasn't disorganization, it was pure fundamentals that did in the Hoyas on defense. The good news is we've seen every one of those players play better defense at some point (and as freshmen in many cases). So we know they can, they just have to do it. And if they don't, first guy standing straight up and getting blown by takes a seat.

lack of effort was the issue saturday, not anything else. dsr, peak and copeland need to show up tonight ready to play on BOTH ends or it will be a blowout.

just so you know, when we play Edited out ball tonight, I intend to start a thread suggesting that Paul White is the Second Coming of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
unless of course he sits again... that would suck - how can we win without a messiah?

No not really, quite the opposite actually. How so? I mean, he quite literally says that you can spin the loss and say it's early, that the team isn't ready. But he disagrees with that and says simply the team isn't very good. Let's hope Dakich is wrong.

No not really, quite the opposite actually. How so? He suggests that we were as prepared as we could've been with the increased access to the coaches. He thinks that you can justify the loss anyway we want, but at the end of the day he thinks we lost just because we're not very good, not because it was day 1 of the season.

It's a tall order to win on the home court of the #3 ranked team. I just want to see them give as good as they get tonight. Stay close, show they can compete at the same level, and play better defense. I'm going to go crazy if Hayes gets another double-double. Is it too early to question why he received so few minutes last year? Might find out tonight...

"Youth" is no excuse in this era of college basketball (and c'mon guys we started 2 seniors and 2 sophomores who played a ton last year.) I need to see effort, pride, fight- from everyone. Players to coaches to team managers. Otherwise, we could be down by 15 at the under 16:00 timeout and I can't listen to Maryland fans yelling obscenities in my ear for 2+ hours. Who was the second senior who started after playing tons of minutes last year??? " and 2 sophomores who played a ton last year" Ike and Peak.
