Count me among those who believe that we can still be a great team after receiving this news. As others have stated, the departure of DSR may force this year's class to coalesce around its own leadership dynamic and require Ike, LJ, Paul, and Tre to become more comfortable using their skills to take over a game.
That said, I am concerned about a trend where it seems that we are lamenting every March that we were just "1 player short" of making that big March run. I really thought that coming out of this tournament we were on a big upswing with two solid recruiting classes coming in. Now, we have a lot more questions than answers in the short term and, if we are successful this coming year, likely to face the same situation next spring.
Ultimately, though I give the staff the benefit of the doubt, for now. We need an addition now to shore up our potential for next year but I choose to believe that we can go out and find someone. Today was definitely a big blow, but I'm not going to panic until I see what happens and who we are going to have on our roster in November.

Other than the lack of backcourt depth, there's really nothing to panic about. With or without DSR, next year will easily be our most talented team since Chris/Austin/Greg Monroe We just have to go out and find some depth. We'll be fine

This team is going to be really talented as it stands.
Ideally, imo Trey Lewis or Damien Lee fet convinced fo come and we add a freshman point guard to ease up potential concerns if Trey were to go down.

One change that I hope for is that the role of our center changes slightly. I thought Smith/Hopkins got caught holding the ball at the top of the key too often which made us start our offense over midway through the shot clock. If Hayes/Govan/Agau flash to the top of the key, I want it for a pick and roll where they flash to the hoop. I'd also like to see Ike/Paul and possibly Marcus set picks where they stay put and Tre can drive and make decision (kick out, floater, dish to big) depending on who defense follows. I don't want the ball in Hayes/Govan's hand at the top of the key making decisions with the playmaking ability of the other guys on the floor; especially when they aren't a threat to make that jumper consistently. If we play to our strengths we can be a very dangerous team next year. Isn't freshman to sophomore supposed to be the biggest jump developmentally at the college level?

Hoyas need to add a transfer and/or recruit or two for some guard depth. If that happens, they COULD still be really good. I loved what DSR did for the program, and he was a great player; now we have to see if the program can be as good or better with less experienced but more athletic guards in his place. To me, the answer is maybe at this point. Also, guys like Peak and White need to be able to play guard. If those things occur, this team can be very good still.

I am disappointed that DSR is leaving. Until we get more information about DSR's goals and why he is doing this, I will refrain from commenting much on his decision. My inclination is to believe it is not wise, but for the purposes of 2015-2016 it really doesn't matter anymore. A few thoughts:
(1) Under any scenario, we are worse off without DSR. That is no doubt a fact. However, I don't think things are as bad as they initially might seem.
(2) Tre Campbell is really good. My main reason for not being too worried about next year is that Tre Campbell is a really good player, and he should improve (JT3's guards tend to make a good jump between freshman and sophomore year). I think because of his more limited playing time and having DSR in front of him, Campbell's achievements were a bit overlooked. By the end of the season, he was arguably the second best offensive player on the team.
Tre Campbell is one of the most efficient freshman guards we have had:
Campbell: O Rating: 112.6 overall (120.5 in the Big East, which shows he improved - he also shot 41.9% from three in the Big East, which is excellent, though a small sample size). His numbers in conference play actually weren't too far off from DSR's.
Campbell's freshman year was arguably better than other JT3 guards like Starks (76.1 O Rating), Clark (100.3 O rating), Wright (100.1 O rating), Wallace (98.0). I am not concerned.
(3) Campbell is the type of guard who can give us a lot of minutes. Clearly, having a guard play 30-35 minutes per game out of necessity is not ideal, but JT3 has shown that he will go to a tight rotation when needed. I would expect Campbell to do this, and he seems well conditioned, so I am not overly concerned about it if this is needed.
(4) JT3 guards tend to make a good jump between freshman and sophomore years. This was true with Wallace, Starks, Clark, and Wright. If Campbell makes a similar jump, he'll be really good next year and he's already good.
(5) Our depth is not great, but it's not a disaster either. Clearly, we probably need another guard on the roster. That being said, I think PG is really the main area of need. You want somebody who could also fill in for Campbell if he gets hurt. Hopefully, we can get a 5th year transfer, or a late freshman signing to fill this role. If we get do that, we really aren't much worse off because DSR would have left after this season anyway. Again, we will still hurt from DSR's departure, but if we could land someone like Carlino that would help a lot.
We really don't have a problem at shooting guard, in the sense that Peak is likely to get a lot of minutes, and guys like White and Johnson will likely get minutes there as well. But, we do have a gaping whole at PG, and that needs to be addressed.
(6) The freshman should all improve. JT3's freshman generally improve a lot in their sophomore year as I noted above. I am not expecting an Otto Porter like transformation, but if the freshman all improve, and that's combined with contributions from the incoming class, we could be better than expected.
Losing DSR stinks, and we will likely be worse off next year as a result. We should be an NCAA tournament team, but we might be closer to this season than what we were expecting for next year, as a result.

Can't wait to see him run the team next season. With a day to let the DSR news sink in, I'm starting to see some upside. Would have rather had him, but still think we can be a good team capable of playing on the second weekend. Separate note: The overall outsider's perception of the Big East is circling the bowl at the moment. These two hires really hurt - reinforced the notion that these teams are buried in the past, and not looking toward the future. At this point we just all have to take our lumps in the media for another 12 months. I'm convinced that the only way to start to reverse public perception is for several Big East teams to make deep March runs. And it may take more than one season of deep runs to do it.

One caveat, I want to coin it the Otto/Whitt jump because they were pretty much neck and neck on both sides of the ball until his career was derailed....I say that to say that an Otto-like (now Otto/Whitt jump) is as unreasonable an expectation as one might think. DSR has a pretty significant jump as well.

We will be better next year when it matters the most.......in March. We will struggle a bit early because our schedule is tough and we will miss DSR against teams like Duke and Wisconsin. Around the 1/4 mark of the BE season we will start to see things coming together. When the BE tourney starts we will be a 3-5 seed and no one will want to be matched up with us. Trust me fellas, barring the word that I won't mention the freshmen are better off having to swim without the life jacket.

Which is why 'Nova's awful loss to NCSU hurts SOOO much. It does. But it is also the league's fault for letting Nova walk all over everybody. Anyway we are mid-major until further notice--or maybe we really are mid-major! Time to accept it and get to work.

Remind me the last time a mid-major conference had 60% of its teams in the tourney and an 83% win ratio on the first day? Or the last time a mid-major had the 2nd highest conference RPI? Dog, I been reading your posts for years and sometimes you are spot on, but this panicked nonsense about being a mid-major is making you seem like one of the usual ninnies & twits who are making this board depressing. man up dammit

Dog, I been reading your posts for years and sometimes you are spot on, but this panicked nonsense about being a mid-major is making you seem like one of the usual ninnies & twits who are making this board depressing. man up dammit You won't find an unbiased basketball talking head in the country who will agree with the idea that the Big East is on par with the Power 5 conferences. That is the solidified perception now--we had probably 1-2 years to dispel it, but just as the conference was announced the Hoyas lost to FGCU, and then in its first season Georgetown and Marquette tanked, Creighton came form the MVC and took things by storm, and Nova went out early in the tournament. The subsequent fall non-conference schedule and regular season gave great reason to hope that actually the first year was a fluke and this was a very solid, difficult league that belonged in the big boy conversations--and then Nova lost to NC State in Round 2. We can object to individual aspects of these facts all we like or explain them away, but the perception has now solidified. At this point it would take at least 2 BE Final Four or at least 2-teams-in-the-Elite-Eight together type of seasons to undo the damage. The perception has solidified, and if the public at large is saying it, you can bet non-BE coaches are saying it every time they text a recruit, and recruits are hearing about it too. This is an unprecedented recruiting challenge for Georgetown, which has not in my lifetime had to contend with any such thing. Yes the Marquettes and Xaviers and DePauls and Butlers and Creightons of the world are used to this and therefore probably aren't nearly as concerned with the damage Villanova's loss did to perception as we are. But it is a huge and new challenge. I will say expressly though what I think should be obvious so we don't have to waste two hours arguing about it: I am not saying that I believe necessarily that the new BE is below all of the Power 5. I'm saying that what I think doesn't matter--the world at large is all in agreement: we are a cut below.

We could very easily equal Gonzaga's run, and add a Final Four onto it, playing in this lesser Big East. I am with you that it is a bit disappointing how this has shaken out, but it could have been a lot worse, and we can still be a major program even in a (high) mid-major conference.

But how many Gonzagas are there--what a crazy small margin for error? And by the way, has Gonzaga been to the Final Four? Before Gonzaga, there was Xavier and Butler, Wichita St., VCU, UNI. Our margin for error is already small, we're gonna continue to be the upset pick until we win, regardless of what conference we're in and what public perception of our conference is. Again, we have to worry about ourselves. It isn't that complicated and our position as an individual program in the public eye hasn't really changed. Win the games we should, try and steal a marquee OOC win or two and avoid bad losses. Get to the post-season and try to win. III has proven he can schedule strongly in the non-conference. Gonzaga hasn't been to the final 4, but it's going on 10 years since we've been their either! That has nothing to do with conference and everything to do with us.
