DePaul lost to Loyola Marymount, Ohio and Lehigh. These are terrible losses. They also lost a succession of games to teams that sound bad but aren't, like GW, Illinois St., Oregon State and Colorado. To offset that in non-conference, they have a very good Stanford win.
It's too many losses and three horribly bad losses. If we had lost to Robert Morris, Radford and Towson in addition to also losing to Florida and maybe Charlotte -- that's their non-conference. Really hard to overcome.
But -- if they really keep it up in the BE, the narrative could build that this is a different team.

It may not benefit the teams in the middle of the conference trying to get a bid come March - but to have that program on the upswing in the conference would be very beneficial in the long run. And the more losses they hang on higher ranked teams, the less "bad" those losses become. I understand that Depaul is not rocketing up the RPI rankings this season, but I would love to see them become a consistent winner. There’s very little upside to them finishing 8-8 in the BE or 10-6 etc… It’s very unlikely they even get in the top 100 rpi. If they want to start being a consistent winner, I’m all for it. But it would be best for the conference if they started next season in the OOC.. Was watching one of the Bracketology experts who had 7 BE teams in a couple weeks back and he said the only way the BE doesn’t get 6 teams in is if lower level teams like Depaul start beating The higher ranked teams… I agree in general that their OOC this season was so bad that they can't fully recover no matter how well they do, and need to be competitive from Day 1 next year; however a solid conference season this year will help generate a little off season excitement and anticipation. Anyone that can't beat them this year has only themselves to blame. As Bilas always says - stop complaining, and just win more games.

Again, I think you guys are only saying this because it is DePaul. The fact is, this is a team that has won 4 top 100 games, 5 if you consider Marquette at 102. How can you say that they are hanging bad losses on teams? If we lose at Marquette, do you think that is a bad loss? Yes losing to Marquette would be a bad loss. Any loss to a team with a sub 100 RPI is a bad loss. I could care less about Depaul, I care about their RPI ranking. Yup. Basically if we sweep the 3 bad RPI teams: DePaul, Creighton, Marquette and split with the rest of the teams we are in for sure. Winning the remaining DePaul, Creighton and Marquette games are the most critical games of the season as things currently stand.

They made the tournament last year and have an RPI of 45 on top of winning the Diamond Head tournament over #11 Wichita State.

If you guys feel that way, than you have much too high expectations of college basketball teams. Like I said, we will probably be underdogs. Losing on the road in conference to top 100 teams is more expected than it is bad. Im not sure how going 3-6 on the road is good, but losing to Marquette is somehow a bad loss.

There is plenty of evidence that the BE is elite, and I don't think there is a question that it is the best at the bottom. But whether or not we believe DePaul has markedly improved, their stupid 7-game losing streak and subsequent success is an undesirable data point in that argument. All things being equal, I would prefer to see DePaul end up in the bottom 3-4 in the conference. That may still happen, but they are tough and experienced.

How sweet Indiana beating Maryland. As most of us thought at the time Indiana is a very good team and our win over them gets us lots of RPI points. Plus local media that was falling all over Terps may now spend more time and ink on the Hoyas. DePaul proved last night what I've thought for a while, that Seton Hall will be one our our "easier" road wins. So will St John's. Tomorrows game is huge if we want to get to 5 road wins and 14-4 in BE (I'm thinking Nova, Butler will be our other two road loses). I mean, local media won't actually spend more time and ink on the Hoyas. They never do. But it is nice to have the ability to point to our win over Indiana and their beating at the hands of the Hoosiers any time people get too excited about the Terps (especially in relation to the Hoyas). Right. I think we can cease all griping about Hoyas coverage until we start filling up more seats at Verizon/winning tournament games. Tournament success is what drives casual fan interest in programs.

If you have confusing evidence about what DePaul is, you go with "DePaul isn't very good" as a tiebreaker, if you aren't invested in the BE looking good. We can make all of the counterarguments we want--many of them good--but it would be better for DePaul to fall back down the standings.

Is there a line on the GU/MU game yet? I would never bet against the Hoyas, but if anything comes out that doesn't make Marquette a narrow favorite, I think a wise gambler would put money down on the Golden Eagles. This is definitely a winnable game, but I would put it maybe Marquette -1

I wasn't suggesting that you were complaining, just making a general statement that teams that lose to Depaul can't be complaining about Depaul's OOC failings. As long as we are not a team that gets bumped because we lost to Depaul, I would rather see their program start the climb to respectability now, and not worry too much about having one less team in the NCAAT. Again - if someone misses the tourney because they lost to Depaul, and cannot otherwise rely on the rest of their resume, they didn't belong in anyway.

But it's a must win because losing will really hurt our RPI.

If they don't have a strong showing the rest of the season he'll be gone and the program will have to start from scratch again which means it would likely take a couple years to get to even the position they are at right now. So wanting them to lay down this year, basically means they will not be good next year either.

Ok but the same anticipation and excitement was at Depaul last Summer and they still went out and laid an egg in the Non Conference this year. Give me 6-7 teams in the Tourney that’s something that helps every team in the BE recruit. Even Depaul

But it's a must win because losing will really hurt our RPI. It will dent our RPI for sure but it won't be a killer, would move us from 16 to approximately 25. What really does damage to RPI is a home loss to an inferior RPI team. For example, Seton Hall went from RPI of 20 to 40 with last night's loss to Depaul. What's crazy is we really just need 6 more wins to lock up a bid RPI wise, a 19-10 finish will do it under pretty much any combo of losses and wins you choose.

We aren't a good enough shooting team to win every game against teams that we are better than. It isn't going to happen. But I still think an undefeated home schedule and 4 road wins is worthy and achievable goal. If we are able to get a 2nd win this weekend--of course it isn't a "must win", no game in January is when you're on top of the conference--our chances at getting two more road wins out of Creighton, SJU, Nova, SHU, and Butler look better.
