I liked this earlier quote from JT3: “[Hayes] had a very good summer. He got hurt the other day, but he is playing well now. Hopefully, it will just be a couple days and he will be back. He’s got a chance [to be the most improved],” Thompson said.

I'm not worried about DSR at all unless DSR is worried. He had a bad shooting day game 1 and in game 2, we simply had others shoot. The only thing I'm worried about there is some annoyance with freshmen who might be a bit overaggressive at times. But it's tough to complain with fast break buckets or dumping it down low. The offense isn't amazing yet, but it's pretty good, especially if we don't turn it over.
Despite our dominance of the boards, I'm still much more worried about the defense and defensive rebounding. When we face a Florida or Kansas, will Hopkins and Smith be good enough, or will they be exposed on defense, offense, rebounding, fouling, etc., like what often occurred last season against more susbtantial foes.
If DSR isn't taking and making shots when other choices aren't working, then there's an issue. But we've a real effort to go inside and to fast break, and other players have the edge on DSR in those spaces. When someone plays zone or slows us down, that will change.

I should say it's the second best option for the team behind Tre Campbell being able to take over as the point and replace Trawick or Peak in the starting line up/Starters minutes. As I don't see that happening this season, DSR at the 1, don't see him as an actual point guard this year, is our best bet. Why? 1) He is the best option out of our starting guards 2) It gives us additional height in the backcourt which will help when we have to start playing more zone 3) I think DSR will actually become a better basketball once he gets used to controlling the offense a bit more than last year which will obviously help us. Now I don't think DSR at the 1 is a GREAT option but it's our best current option and I think it's far to early to give up on it and him. Once he figures out is role at the 1 spot, and I don't think it's going to be a traditional point guard role at all, I think it will really pay off. We just need to be a little more patient. Why is DSR better than Jabril exactly? Even if we say he is a better option as the lead man, if we ask who's a better option as an off guard the answer would be DSR and by a wider margin than Jabril is better than him as a lead guard.. I guess my point is DSR had a good freshman year playing off the ball and he had a great sophomore year playing off the ball so why screw with the program? The lineup doesn't have to change one bit imo.. I'd still start Jabril & Peak so the same "heigh/length" will be on the court.. Again, I have no issues with letting it play out longer and I will admit that I didn't see the St. Francis game.. Because Jabril cannot handle the ball at that level. I think it would cause too many turnovers. If Jabril had the handle to do it sure, but I haven't seen it yet. Jabril has a good handle but not strong enough to be initiating the offense.

I'm not thrilled with DSR's play so far - how could I be? - but I guess I'm in the camp that believes he is the best option at the 1. I don't think Campbell is anywhere near ready. Could Jabril play the point? Maybe. I think my bottom line is that the team really, really misses Markel at this point in the season.
I was there in an otherwise mostly empty section 110 and what I mostly saw was two very different halves. Our D was pretty porous in the first half; it seemed like CC was making open shot after open shot. And, again, our 3s weren't falling. As others have said, it was the D that picked up in the second half, along with offensive boards. Will the second-half performance be more indicative of the season than the first? I hope so, but I'm reluctant to assume it.

Part of what board members often talk about, especially on the Recruiting board, is the preparation of our players for pro ball, be it NBA or overseas. Team goals come first but helping players achieve their goals basketball-wise is important as well. It should be pretty clear that DSR's only role in the NBA would be as a 1 so if Georgetown's goals can be served by winning games and DSR's goals can be served by helping him learn the role of a 1 it seems to me that he should be doing as much of it as possible.
His removal in the 2nd half was probably more of a statement to him from the coach than we will ever hear about. "Hey kid, I know you are Pre-season BE Player Of The Year but if you don't produce we can win without you so get off your butt". I'm confident he'll take it to heart and come back stronger. Didn't he get benched against Seton Hall last year and then was solid thereafter?

More kudos to Bowen as I re-watch. He generated so much of his own offense -- steals and grabbing offensive boards. These weren't points generated by others and he just finished -- he generated the possession and generally finished it off. Rewatched!? How can I see a replay of the game? HELP!

Our biggest issues are defense and rebounding, and that is not something Markel would help tremendously with. At this point in the season DSR probably really really misses Markel, but the team as a whole has yet to feel the magnitude of his absence. The time will come however.

I thought Tre did a very good job slowing down the point guard for CC. He seems to be just as quick as those little guys from mid-majors, who seem to torch us come NCAA tournament time...so he is a very welcome addition. Like others here, I am also somewhat surprised that DSR, at least in the small sample size, has not looked all that comfortable running the point. I hope it doesn't mess him up....he is a cold blooded scorer, and needs that confidence to be effective.

I agree that the defense is really where we need work. The first half defense was abysmal at times. It seemed to me like we used a zone a little bit and it worked terribly. With this length, it should be better, but maybe we aren't quite there yet.
Defense will be key against Florida. I think we'll be fine scoring against Florida. We have a nice set of different offensive options. Defense will be key though. Texas CC shot 48% against us in the first half last night. Put Florida in there with the same defense and it's probably high 50s or 60s, and we cannot overcome that.

Throw Campbell into the fire. Let him take his lumps, it will pay off in February and March. He is easily good enough to hold his own on the court. As of now, DSR is not a good point guard and is now underperforming as a scorer. Need him to get back to what he does well.

I think we will see it soon too--JT still seems to be experimenting with lineups to a degree he really hasn't before.

While I think this is what we should be doing, and what I think we already kind of are doing, I don't think it would solve the actual problem at hand. It's a mental issue imo, with DSR. He is going to have to be the leader offensively this year, point guard or not, and I think that is what he is actually struggling with. I don't think its the actual "point guard" duties that he is struggling with, it's the responsibility of being the offensive leader and focus. We don't need a "point guard", a guy who distributes and creates for others, but we do need a leader offensively and he is the only one that can be that guy this year. I think we are going to have to be patient with him because it is a tough role to adjust to. Even Green and Hibbert struggled with it in 2007, and Porter in 2013. That is why I am against taking away typical "point guard" responsibilities away from him, because I don't think it will actually benefit him. I am in favor of throwing Campbell in the fire though. The sooner he becomes a strong point guard the better.

Wow guys, seems like a pretty dramatic reaction to a very small sample size of games where DSR's contributions were not needed to win by double digits. I know it's never too early to psychoanalyze a 21 year old based on what is captured by television cameras, but can we maybe wait until conference play has begun before we decide that the preseason conference player of the year doesn't have the requisite intestinal fortitude to be an offensive leader?

DSR had a poor first outing last year against Oregon and that was with a team of veterans who knew each other. He is naturally talented and will be fine. We really have no designated point this year and DSR, Peak and Jabril will eventually figure out what works. I would like to see what happens if we get the interior game going on a consistent basis so that the defense starts collapsing on Smith/Hopkins/Bowen and opening up the outside shot for DSR.

Seriously, it's two games into the season and we basically have 5 new guys in the rotation (counting Smith). There's going to be a bit of an adjustment period for everyone. Maybe Markel was the floor general last year, but I think it's safe to assume DSR was the guy every opposing defense was trying to stop, especially in the second half of the year, so defenses focusing on him should be nothing new. Maybe having the ball in his hands more is a bit of a change, but on the whole, I'd chalk it up to the kid just having a slow start and getting a bit frustrated.
We should all be thanking our lucky stars that we have a team that can bulldoze weaker competition even if he's not on his game, instead of trying to fix something that isn't broken yet. If he was off his game last year, we were in serious trouble against any competition. This year, he basically sits out an entire half and we play the best ball we've played so far in this fledgling season. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. If we hit conference play and something still isn't right, if we've gotten outclassed by the likes of Florida, Kansas, and/or Indiana, then maybe it's time to end the DSR-at-PG experiment. But for now, I say Thompson should keep the lab coat on and experiment as much as possible, because we have all the parts to be a really good team this year, he just has to figure out how they best fit together.

No we can't. Unlike the old BE where we had multiple opportunities for signature wins, we no longer have that luxury. We need to make our mark in the con-conference and need to figure this out well before conference play. Its never a good thing when your best player is benched the 2nd game of the year and looks pretty lost out there on offense. Need to get him back to his comfort zone.
