Only seven schools in the Associated Press Top 25 were defeated this past week: #8 Kansas, #9 Utah, #12 Louisville, #15 North Carolina, #19 Butler, #22 Oklahoma State and #24 Ohio State. Look for Northern Iowa (#11) to move into the Top Ten, replacing Utah. As discussed above, I anticipate San Diego State and Providence moving into the Top 25, replacing Oklahoma State and Ohio State; I figure the Hoyas will slot in at #26 or #27.

I think that is about right. And we do not have the curse of being in the top 25 this week.

If we beat St. John's on Saturday, we'll probably get in the following week. At this point, it really doesn't matter, but I like the optics of being top 25.

This thing is counting our November game with Butler as a conference game, which is annoying.

Though I am sure even if we did win tomorrow we would just fall out again after playing Butler and Seton Hall the following week anyways. I do not think the Hoyas are destined to go into the postseason with a top 25 ranking.

If we win tomorrow, we will probably swap places with Providence (at least) and be in the top 25 but I think any loss would kick us back out. The downside of being a pretty good team in a difficult conference is that it is tough to put together the winning streaks necessary to climb rankings. The top 25 is more about the order of wins than overall quality. It's silly, but it's the way it works. Luckily, for NCAA seeding, it is irrelevant, though I would prefer to be in the top 25 than not.

Fourteen of the AP Top 25 lost games this past week:
#3 Gonzaga, #5 Wisconsin, #8 Kansas, #9 Notre Dame, #10 Northern Iowa, #12 Iowa State (twice), #13 Utah, #15 North Carolina, #18 Arkansas, #20 West Virginia, #21 Southern Methodist, #22 Virginia Commonwealth (twice), #24 San Diego State and #25 Providence.
VCU probably falls out of the Top 25, and we know who's not moving up in its place.

I think SDSU drops out too. Losing at home to a bubble Boise St. team while only scoring 46 points isn't going to be helpful. Not only that, but they effectively relinquished the MWC crown to BSU with that loss.

Villanova moves up to #4, Butler moves up to #21 and Providence moves up to #24. Virginia Commonwealth and San Diego State drop out; Ohio State is #23 and Murray State is #25.

Fourteen of the AP Top 25 were defeated this past week, as the regular season came to a close:
#2 Virginia, #8 Wichita State (in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinal), #9 Kansas, #13 Utah, #14 Baylor, #15 Oklahoma, #16 Louisville, #18 Arkansas, #19 North Carolina, #20 West Virginia, #21 Butler, #23 Ohio State, #24 Providence and #25 Murray State (in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament final).
Should GU be ranked after the wins over Butler and Seton Hall? Yes. Will they be? I'm guessing yes in the Coaches poll, but no in the AP.

Rankings? We talkin' ' bout rankings? This time of year, the rankings go out the door. There should be no national rankings in our players' minds - only the thought of their next opponent. That is all that matters from now on.
Given how we have performed while ranked this year, I would rather we stay out of the polls altogether. We are a 2 seed in the BET and a solid 5 or 6 seed in the big dance. Let's play accordingly. If we do better than our seeding, then good. Actually, great.

Ohio State, Providence and Murray State drop out of the Top 25; Hoyas are #23, Davidson #24 and Boise State #25.
Villanova remains at #4, and Butler drops one slot to #22.

I am glad to see us ranked. There's no logical reason to put Butler ahead of us in the rankings, but it's an illustration of the fact that rankings aren't a science and largely depend on the order of wins/losses than the total record.

Glad to see us ranked again and higher than Boise State. Is their basketball court blue as well?
