Oh lord, can we not call me "The Architect"? How about just "John"? I guess I'm okay with being called by the name I use on here, but honestly, it strikes me as odd this silly nickname business. Just not the nickname type...I would be closer to the "camera shy guy in the third row with the constant nervous expression during games" type. And of all the people to compare JerseyHoya to, Karl Rove just strikes me as funny. I guess our board personalities have taken on lives of their own so nicknames are in order. I figured you'd love the new title.

Here's a quick overview of the meeting:
007 and some kid from the current board got nominated for Pres, with the loser becoming the VP. I was nominated for the position of treasurer, along with 2 current board members, one of whom is abroad.
There was a clear tension b/w the current members (who tried to make past experience w/ HB a requirement for next years officers--which didn't go over well w/ anyone not on the board, including the administration) and the reformers (who weren't just Hoyatalk members, I think).
There was near unanimous agreement that HB should focus on all sports. Also, the rest of the board will be appointed. The constitution will be written next week, along with the voting (which is open to anyone who shows up to the meeting).
From what I could tell, Jersey, FL, CA, 007 and hoyabinx were there.

Some channelling their inner Thomas Jefferson, some not. Some channelling their inner PBR, others not. I believe Joe Hoya was also in attendance, which is great. It is time to win a few elections.

Speaking of which, how do I, as someone with no experience as a treasurer, convince people to elect me as such?

Speaking of which, how do I, as someone with no experience as a treasurer, convince people to elect me as such? Don't claim you don't have experience. You're not some Manchurian Candidate. Choosing between Solo and Dixie cups does not equal experience. We'll have talking points hopefully at some point and "speech prep" sessions over the weekend. Shoot me with an e-mail at some point. We're going to have to mobilize the grassroots.

Oh, I'm not saying I can't do it. I'm good w/ money, and organizing stuff, including a road trip to the BC game. The question is how I go about convincing people that I'm better than someone with "experience". And I know Chris also--he is a good guy. Though I still expect your vote 007.

Speaking of which, how do I, as someone with no experience as a treasurer, convince people to elect me as such? You can count, right? I'd focus on what else you have to offer as a Hoya Blue leader in the way of advertising, inventing new fund raisers, etc. and that sort of thing. Not to make light of the position, but I really doubt you'd ever be faced with any financial matter that is too difficult and complex, and if you ever are, odds are there will be someone above you with their official hands in it as well anyway.

I'd go with Solo, because of their versatility. They can be put into dishwashers ad reused time and time again, if you're under a money crunch. Also, the plastic is sturdier, and they're bigger. Solo all the way!! Oh, right. Yeah, I was there. I thought it turned into a farce. I didn't appreciate the kid being nominated who was abroad. I know you can't control what things go on while you're abroad, but it was specifically mentioned earlier in the meeting that someone HAD to be at the meeting tonight to be nominated. And then, for the current HB people to push this other kid's nomination through...let's just say I left this meeting almost as displeased as I was when I went in. If anyone (namely myself) had thought a little quicker (as opposed to coming up with the idea as I walked out of McD), it would have been beneficial to either have a President/VP ticket to vote for (to avoid conflicts bound to occur between a member of the old guard and a "reformer"), or to have people cast two votes in the presidential balloting (similar to how the Electoral College worked in the first few elections), without specifying which vote is for which. Since a tie amongst three "individual" candidates would be unlikely, there wouldn't be the issues that the U.S. faced 205 years ago. Then, someone would have nominated a third candidate, obviously someone from the reform group. Here's why this works: the current HB people would vote for their boy, and would be forced to vote for a reformer as well. The reform people would then vote for both of their candidates. It is not unreasonable to assume that the two reform candidates would have more votes than the other candidate. Regardless of who was President and who was VP, it would be better to have three new people in power as opposed to a single shred of the current (or any past) regime. Now, I know we've all had our disagreements, but like I said before, I'd much rather have any of you guys running this group than the people who already ran the thing into the ground. If TBird and 007 don't both win, I say we do what it takes and start Jack's Pack, or whatever we would call it, and have a real organization. Focus it on basketball at first, and then when Hoya Blue falters, make the necessary moves to eliminate them from existence and take their place. Sure it seems like sore-loser tactics...but dammit, I'm sore. Now that I've said all these nice things, I expect a nice cushy position on the board that confers the image of a lot of power, without any of the responsibility that goes with an elected position. I'm thinking "Chancellor of Northeastern Internet Talkboard Relations" or something like that.

Joe, I'm throwing together some strategy sessions for the weekend for flyering and speech prep. Hit me with a PM if you are interested in being involved in the campaign.

I don't mind them nominating the abroad kid, from a calculating political stance--that would be 2 old guard candidates, which would split the vote. And the more I think about it, the more I wish I'd thought of your 2 votes idea. Crap. And yeah, Jimmy-my plan right now is to focus on new ideas for HB, emphasize what I have done (BC roadtrip, official party organizer for a club, Bowman flyers) and probably mention that having a hand in the old HB isn't necessarily a good thing. Anyone else have any ideas?

Anyone else have any ideas? The problem is, there are probably more "old guard" kids out there to be split than there are "reform" kids, so a split "old guard" vote could probably still win. Also, the last thing, pushing the idea that being in HB already isn't a good thing...good. Take it. Run with it. Work the crowd into a fervor. You and 007 both. Make sure everyone is nodding their head in approval as you're talking. I think FL's comments were the best ones made all night, and I wish others (myself included) would have spoken up to say the same. Hoya Blue has failed its constituency. Now it's time to go.

Are you sure I can't call you Karl Rove? ;D Well, I want to create a permanent HoyaTalk majority. Isn't this the goal of any campaign adviser? I'd rather not be associated with Rove, but Carville is a good name.

I was there, but I wore the "Thank you Seniors" t-shirt rather than the other one, which, sadly, I do not own. I didn't say anything but took it all in.
As much as speech prep is good, really, it's going to all boil down to which contingent brings more people, the Old Guard or the Reformers (us). I doubt that a massive amount of people will come to this meeting without knowing who they'll be voting for. It isn't like this is the only opportunity to sign up for Hoya Blue, so I dont think a ton of people are going to come to the meeting unless they really care about what goes on next year. Basically, I think it'll be the people in the room tonight plus however many friends they bring, and maybe a couple additional independents.
Edit: I dont mind helping hang flyers or anything like that for 007/T-Bird also, so if you need me just holler.

If I had known, I would have introduced myself. I was behind CA and HoyaBinx.
