What an upside down World (Cup) where the French put up the better fight against Germany... The US put up a better fight. But there's no transitive law in soccer.

The schedule for the USNT will be very busy leading up to WC2018. It is full of important international tournaments. Hopefully, JK also schedules friendlies with one of Belgium, Germany or Holland, an African team and a CONMEBOL team every year. Plus, two tournament lessons learned from the last cycle are: 1.) you cannot take a B team to a Gold Cup anymore, and 2.) you cannot take a B team to an Olympic or under-X qualifying tournament. Here's the schedule: 2015 - CONCACAF Gold Cup - U20 and U17 World Cups 2016 - 100th anniversary edition of CONMEBOL's Copa America hosted in the US and with 6 CONCACAF teams participating. AWESOME!! - Qualification for the Rio Olympics - Rio Olympics (if qualify) for the U-23 team - CONCACAF World Cup Qualification 2017 - Confederations Cup (depends on the Gold Cup results) - CONCACAF Gold Cup - CONCACAF Final World Cup Qualification - U20 and U17 World Cups 2018 - World Cup Nice, I did not know that about 2016 Copa America, should be fun, thanks. By the way, USMNT's next game is a friendly vs. Czech Republic in Prague on September 3. After the German blitzkrieg yesterday that I'm sure will be talked about for many years, rooting for Messi and Argentina in this one. I spent a summer in Argentina during World Cup 2006 so I know how crazy they are about football, plus I'd like to avoid an all-European final if possible. I also think Messi is a swell guy, but Robben can be fun to watch too (despite the diving).

Brasil doing better today, only down 0-2 at half time, but they did let the Blind man score.

An incredibly competitive and exciting tournament. Now if the USA can advance further next time . . .

Germany was the best team in the tournament but Messi simply has to bury the one he pushed wide. That miss remains the hole in his resume. And this comes from an unabashed Messi fan.

What an upside down World (Cup) where the French put up the better fight against Germany... I do find it mildly amusing that after several hundred years of France having their way with the German peoples (Holy Roman Empire, Prussia, Austro-Hungary,) one bad outing between 1939-1945 is all people remember about that ancient rivalry.

You can count the Franco-Prussian War as a bad outing too. WWI was like a match abandoned due to pitch invasion. Bad result for all involved.

And that bad outing was not 6 years, rather it was about 6 weeks...

Nonetheless, I'm always surprised how few Americans know that the French have a pretty outstanding military history if one extends their historical knowledge past the only war Americans seem to know a thing about. Its a bit like making lame jokes about how the Lakers and Celtics are traditionally so bad at pro basketball because of the last season or two.
Napoleon's Grande Armee was more or less the 1927 Yankees of warfare since Caesar if not Alexander and while they were dominating all of Europe there were a great many German speaking princes bending the terrified knee. I wouldn't think it would be an easy example to forget if one has even a high school level of world history. I guess they need a new publicist.

I, for one, am well aware of the rich and vastly successful history of military performance and even dominance of the French.
I am also aware that not all French people spend their days snacking on only Camembert.
I am even further aware that one must go back to pre-history to find a time when people who lived in that area even slightly resembled primitive primates.
On the other hand, I don't know if there will ever be a time when I won't enjoy calling the French "cheese eating surrender monkeys."
If every meme or jibe had to be parsed for 100% accuracy, well, where's the fun in that?

It's not an accuracy thing so much as I guess it's a joke that feels very thin and quite played out at this point, not unlike jibes about British people having bad teeth. When i hear that canard for 500th time i wonder if the joker has actually met any Brits in the last 50 years and I sorta cringe in embarrassment for them.

You would wipe out half of the Austin Power jokes with a single stroke.

Will countries start considering boycotting 2018 World Cup in light of recent events? Discuss.

Will countries start considering boycotting 2018 World Cup in light of recent events? Discuss. Obviuosly, a lot will happen in four years politically and in FIFA: first, FIFA has their presidential elections to deal with; then, they're going to receive the results of their own investigation (conducted by a former U.S. District Attorney) into the awarding of the 2022 WC. Who knows if the awarding of the 2018 WC gets sprinkled with corruption allegations! What will FIFA do? It will depend on who is running it.

Someone just sent me this stat:: "The differential between shots for and shots against in the four games for the U.S. was a whopping minus-39. The lowest mark of any of the eight quarterfinalists belongs to Costa Rica at minus-8 (according to ESPN Stats and Information). Yes, the U.S. competed, but it was also hanging on for dear life for much of the tournament."
Unbelievable!

Well, I guess that stat started the joke about what the difference was between Tim Howard and Jesus: Jesus had 10 good guys to rely on.
