Wow, that would definitely be a great sign. B&G, any sense as to how much the coaching staff thinks each freshman will contribute this season based on workouts/Kenner so far? I wonder, beyond basketball, who they think will be the leaders personality-wise of the class.

Have no idea. Just know that staff has taken note that he is scoring 30 plus consistently in Kenner. I mean that's pretty darn impressive.

No one should be surprised when LJ Peak pushes his way into the starting line up by mid-December. It's hard to argue with that, but I guess the real question then is who does he push out of the starting lineup? Does Jabril go to the bench, or does JTIII start a 3 guard lineup?

Joshua Smith may factor into the calculation.

I attended Kenner yesterday and would agree with B&G's assessment. Peak was the real deal and easily the most impressive player I saw. He may not start, but I would say he'll easily get starter-like minutes at some point this season, and probably sooner than later. Most impressive thing for me was his ability to finish in traffic and through contact, which has long been a weakness of many of our players.
I thought Tre looked good as well. Lightning quick and seemed under control for the most part. Copeland and White struggled to shoot the ball, but I thought their ability to handle the ball (especially at their size) will do wonders for this team moving forward. We'll see far fewer meaningless dribble drive hand-offs on the perimeter this season than we have in recent seasons, and that will make everyone on the floor more dangerous. That's for certain.

Love LJ Peak. I’m an LJ Peak Fanboy but I’ll believe it when I see it in a actual game… When the game is loose and little defense is being played is when he at his best.

LJ is very good but NOT ai as one loyal fan said after today NEEDS TO HIT CONSISTANT OUTSIDE shot in the big east and not there so far Cant just go to the hoop all the time amoung the trees GREAT athlete. but will have to continue to work hard. AND peterson is julian vaughn yup JUJU was back ala ralph BROWN dalton in the old days NOT SURE why not JUJU but that was him me thinks. copeland good white off tre campbell pretty good solid play all around. GO HOYAS and I have to remember its only keener but FUN and good hoop club bbque. GO HOYAS LOL. Come on, lic. No offense but you were making the Iverson comparisons in this thread at this time last week. Now you want to slow the hype machine down. I hear ya. Although to be fair the same criticisms directed at Peak’s three-point shooting could have been just as much directed at Iverson for basically his entire career (or at the very least at Iverson leading up to his frosh season on the hilltop). People also wrote that Iverson couldn’t keep going into the trees once he got to the “next” level (college and then pros). But sure enough he kept doing it. Just like Dwayne Wade kept doing it. If you’re good enough you can’t keep attacking that way. Sure, a player should want to vary his skills and add that jumper (which I’m sure Peak will), but taking it strong to the hole is not a bad thing. No one should be surprised when LJ Peak pushes his way into the starting line up by mid-December. If he’s good enough why wait that long.? I would hate to see someone like a fifth year senior Bowen or a soph like Cameron get that nod and be teased with the thought of staring all season long only to see that dream die before Christmas. If Peak kills it in practice then put him in the starting lineup pronto. Still I give you props for at least realizing that the kid may be the most-ready of the freshmen. Hate to keep knocking the fine folks at Casual Hoya but a few days when one of the questions of the day was which freshmen was going to have the biggest impact I would say 80% of them answered with Copeland. No offense to Copeland who I think will be a stud but how did those people overwhelmingly come to that conclusion? It certainly wasn’t based on what has been going on in the KL so it must have been about which recruit was ranked highest and which the experts told them was going to be top dog. ...and I had the audacity--by the way I was pilloried for it--to use his name in the same sentence with MJ some time ago. Even if you end up right I think it was justified for people to be skeptical of your comparing arguably the greatest player all time to, at that moment, a high school kid who wasn’t on track to even be a McDAA. That was a bit much. This. Opponents may have to worry about guarding five guys on the floor other than just two or three. Love LJ Peak. I’m an LJ Peak Fanboy but I’ll believe it when I see it in a actual game… When the game is loose and little defense is being played is when he at his best. You can make the same argument that Copeland and White will have to prove it in a real game first too. Seriously I don’t get it. Everyone going out to KL claiming this kid is the real deal (same happened with the people praising him in South Carolina) and yet you worry about his halfcourt game. First of all do you really think he scored all of those points in high school and in the Kenner League off of fastbreak points? Those are merely the baskets that people talk about the most because they tend to be the most exciting. Second of all it would appear to me that the only major flaw Peak would have in the halfcourt is his outside shooting. But as I wrote earlier AI had that same issue too as did Victor Page. Do you have them come off the bench because of that? Even with his inconsistent shooting Iverson was still a major threat in the halfcourt because he could break defenders down and go by them with his handle, speed, athleticism, agility and fearlessness. Those are traits Peak seems to share. You wrote earlier that Paul White would be the better fit in the halfcourt. With White’s jumpshot and apparent high bball IQ you may have an argument. I think highly of White as well, love his potential. But White has that “blend in, let the game come to me” approach that suggests he will take himself out of being an offensive threat because he would be looking to pass first, second and third rather than be the aggressor when needed. Some of the very best players under III were the same way (or encouraged to be so). Been there done that. Can we try a new approach? One that may lead to at the very least more free throw attempts for the Hoyas? We one time had a 7’2 All American center shooting above 65% from the floor (hardly any of them being dunks) and yet was taking only around 8 shots a game it seemed. Enough of that. If you have a player who will go at it then by all means let him do so, even if he makes his share of mistakes along the way. I also worry that White will be another in a line of lengthy forwards who will settle for the jumpshot rather than attack the hole like DaJuan Summers and even the Great Otto Porter. Have you seen any of the clips of Hollis Thompson against NBA players whether summer league or the actual league itself? He still has that sweet jumper but he’s driving more, switching hands as he does so and then throwing down one-handed lefty slams in the paint. Where was that guy during his three years at Gtown? I’ll tell you where….standing in a corner waiting to take a three-point shot with no more than ten seconds left on the shotclock. For once I would love to see a Hoya at the swing position rely on his driving than his outside shooting. We got DSR to provide the threes, we have a returning Trawick who got much better from long distance when he returned from injury. We have Tre, Isaac, Reggie and possibly Paul who could be reliable three-point shooters. So let Peak be Peak. Of course some brakes and controls will have to be applied to his game, and that will make him a better player down the road. But let us not neuter him with some shotclock-consuming, halfcourt approach when he’s on the floor. And certainly let us not contain him to the bench at the beginning of games if he is one of the top four or five players on the team by the time this coming season begins.

LJ Peak is an athletic freak 6’5 with a College Body. Halfcourt or Full Court nobody in SC could stop that kid, it means squat. He won’t be facing that level of comp this year. Idk what the end rant was about but the Spurs just one a Championship and the NBA is the highest level.. And who wants Peak to not be Peak? Players should play to their strengths. Can’t make Peak a jump shooter just as it would have been foolish for 3 to turn Otto or Hollis into dribble drive guys. If you want Peak to be Peak he’d probably be best served coming off the bench were he can stay in attack mode Imo... It’s about fit not about putting the best 5 you have out there when the game starts. Hollis Thompson imo based on the games I saw is not good at attacking the basket. In the NBA he’s a 3 and D guy just as he was here.

Who got bashed for loving Peak? The board has all but universally loved him since the commitment. People made fun of michaelgrahamstyle -- and should continue to do so -- for comparing him to Michael Jordan. That's just embarrassing. The prosecution complexes around here are amazing. Almost amazing as thinking a good run through Kenner somehow validates a Jordan comp.

Because I’ve watched him play many times and against various competition.. I’m not exactly a guy who throws shade on guys, I just give my honest opinion based on what I’ve seen. LJ Peak is an athletic freak 6’5 with a College Body. Halfcourt or Full Court nobody in SC could stop that kid, it means squat. He won’t be facing that level of comp this year. With all due respect that's a tired argument. Ewing was doing damage in Massachusetts and folks could have said the same thing : he won't be facing that level of comp when he goes to college. Iverson was dominating the Chesapeake and the same caution to the wind could have been made about him (and was): he won't be facing that competition when he reached college. n fact this argument can be made about every great player in the history of basketball: the competition they faced in college would be much tougher than the one they faced in college and the competition they squared off against in the NBA was on a much higher level than what they faced as a college athlete. And yet the great ones adjust and match that higher challenge anyway. Can't say if Peak is destined for greatness but cam't say he isn't either. So let us see how he adjusts (if he can) rather than throw out all he has been able to do at every level so far (including KL play). And lets us be fair...if he had laid an egg during his senior year of play and was laying an egg in the KL it is doubtful many would be saying "well, that doesn't really mean anything". But we get away with such comments if a kid is dominating his competition. Ah, but you see III may try to turn a non-jumpshooter into a shooter but he NEVER seems to try to make jumpshooters into drivers. Or at least he doesn't seem to make them add the driving ability to their overall game. That's the difference. I don't mind if III makes Peak work hard on his jumpshot, I've been clear about that. But I don't want him doing so at the expense of his ability to drive and score. Why must he come off the bench to do that? And why would the system suddenly change for the Hoyas for a guy coming off the bench anyway? Suddenly the style is supposed to change just because Peak comes in as the sixth man? In my opinion if it isn't going to be encouraged if he is a starter I doubt his style would be encouraged if he enters the game as a substitute. There has to be a consistency especially if III keeps using a short bench. Because if III uses a short bench you may get a situation in which Peak substitutes for one starter but is nonetheless playing with the remaining four starters who are still on the court. Are those four other guys supposed to suddenly alter their approach merely as the result of Mr. Peak checking into the game? That (faulty) point of view apparently gave us three plus years of Nate Lubick starting. Hollis is not Kobe or Wade that's for sure. But he is showing the ability to drive to the hole regularly and using his athleticism to finish. It is not his main weapon of choice nor should it be. But it is one he is capable of attempting multiple times in a game. And if he can drive to the hole against NBA level players then he should have been doing it a lot more against the likes of those on the rosters of teams like Rutgers, seton Hall, Notre Dame, American University, etc. It is something he appears to be working on now when truthfully speaking Hoya coaches should have had him work on that day in and day out. You and I both know that a common instruction in basketball is that if your shot isn't falling don't keep settling for jumpers, get to the hoop. It may not be in the cards for Reggie Cameron to acquire this ability but Hollis surely had enough physical tools to work on that part of his game while at Gtown for three years.

To me the team needs competent front court play more than it needs an aggressive sg/sf type.. All due respect to Nate, Mikael & Moses but they were awful last season.. Hopefully Copeland can provide the much needed stability in the front court.. LJ may very well end up scoring more points, having more highlights than Ike but the bottom line is JT3's offense doesn't run well without solid play from it's front-court..
