Great win. The season was really on the line, Cotton was playing out of his mind, and we were reeling. Can't give enough credit to the team for just gutting it out. Great to see everybody just stick together and play so hard. Would have loved for the crowd to have been a bit larger. Other than that, a terrific night.

Agreed johnny snow plow, the shred of a season we have left flashed before my eyes with Markel grabbing his knee.
Glad to see this team fight, and not just fight, but win games that two weeks ago we would have found ways to lose. Trawick has made such a difference since coming back from the jaw. Johnnies are playing really well of late, that would be a nice scalp to sweep the series with them.

Loving the fact that DSR scored 22 pts off 10 shots.

Cooley sounded pretty annoyed and surprised they lost that game. I can't blame him. We really played a different game the last 8 minutes or so. We just did almost everything right. Even the fouls against us, I thought, were pretty questionable. That DSR rebound away from Derosiers was just awesome. I suppose PC lost some steam, but it's not like we got home cooking on calls or made lucky baskets. Great win. You can tell the past two seasons that Cooley and his guys really want to beat Gtown. He comes across as if his he has the better players (and that's not exactly the wrong view to take as a head coach). After the Friars beat up on the Hoyas earlier this season I'm sure Cooley thought he had the Hoyas figured out; probably thought the Hoyas weren't tough enough to win against his guys. Just my suspicion. One great thing about the win: the Hoyas' scoring output. If Gtown had lost by scoring, say, 67 points rather tha over 80, people here would bemoaning the defense for being horrible. But as I've argued in the past the Hoyas' defense has been very good for the last few years; it's just that you can't always expect to hold other schools to 60 points or less. Sometimes you have to put up points yourself. Beating a Friars team that scores 71 points is very doable, especially on your own homecourt, just as long as you are a team that can put up points like a typical D1 program. Problem with the Hoyas as of late is that scoring has been a, well, problem. That wasn't the case tonight. It helps when you don't lose possessions through turnovers. The bad thing about tonight: the attendance. Ugh. That looked awful,

Let's hear it for JT3 also. He has taken a team with serious problems and came up with a way to mask those problems while building on the teams strengths. The sign of a good coach. I worry that sooner or later those problems (mainly our lame front court) will catch up with us but Trawick has arrived and Reggie getting better every game (how about those clutch free throws at the end) so who knows? I watched St John's beat Creigton and was impressed by how much better they are now. They' seem to realize it pays to play defense. This Saturdays game will be a real battle. Win it and beat either Nova or Creighton and I think we make the show.

What recruit was behind the bench? Was it Reeves?

Congrats to Nate Lubick on the game tonight. He played under control, took 3 or 4 charges, rebounded and passed well. He has taken a beating on this board and is a senior who is playing like one! I mean, really, can the Nate Fan Club stop harping about this every time Nate has a solid to good game? Last time I checked every player outside of DSR and Markel (and a couple of times perhaps even them) has taken a beating this season from those of us on these boards. The head coach and students take a beating too! It is what it is.

I hope it doesn't happen this weekend but if it does on the Johnnie's homecourt I can't be too disappointed with that as long as the Hoyas compete. Beating Providence was more of a big deal to me because the Friars already blew out the Hoyas earlier this season and were going for the sweep tonight on the Hoyas' turf. We HAD to win this one.

Cotton shrunk with the defensive heat in the 2nd half.

I've been pretty disappointed with Nate this season, but if he has a good game and someone wants to praise him for it, why do you care? Maybe you can just tell us what is acceptable to say after a game, when to say it, etc. Sorry, I usually find your comments to be insightful, but that's just a little petty.

The defense on Cotton in the second half was great. Trawick has always carried himself like a stopper but I think he's really starting to grow into that role. He can guard just about any 1, 2, or 3 we face and do a good job. We were determined not to let Cotton get looks in the second half and that's exactly what we did. Good adjustments and good execution.
Nice to have the other team struggle with foul trouble in their front court for once! Gotta say, Nate is pretty much the only guy on the team who ever takes a charge (successfully.) Maybe he can teach some of our other guys...

The kid played a solid game and has put together a good run of basketball the last couple weeks. Of course he's not the player we all hoped he'd be at this point, but why is it so wrong to praise him for a good game? Don't we praise every other guy on the team when they play well?

It is what it is? What does that even mean? Look, I've been very critical of Nate most of the season -- justly so -- and he still has several deficiencies that might end up biting this team when it counts. His inability to hit a jumper is disappointing, although he did hit one tonight and had another shot go in and out. But yeah, he's struggled overall and I don't think anyone is happy about that. However, lets give the guy his due when he plays well. He had a good night and we don't win without him finishing plays, getting rebounds and forcing turnovers on defense. Whenever anyone else has a good game that player gets lauded. I don't understand the reflexive aversion to do it when Nate plays well unless you value assessing his negatives correctly more than an actual win for the Hoyas.
Also, Hoyas may very well finally drop one to SJU next game, but can we at least wait until later in the week for the dire predictions? We just won a huge game that may have salvaged our season....
And yes, I usually find MCI to be one of the more interesting posters on this site so nothing personal here...

A subtle highlight of the game for me was seeing JT2 so worked up after Markel hurt his knee sending messengers to the trainers to find out what the deal was then screaming at the trainers to go get the knee brace out of the lockerroom then was still worked up that he spiked his hat on the table. My guess is that he was Editeded ab a substitution JT3 made cause he was clearly agitated and gave his son a piece of his mind after the game. Anyone sitting right behind the bench have any idea what pops was so worked up about?

Great game by all. Every player had more positive minutes on the floor than negative. Great game plan by JT3. With Providence having a short bench, he had the Hoyas play man defense the first half and play a faster pace up and down floor on offense. Although this allowed Cotton to go off it paid off in second half as Cotton and others seemed to lose their legs and were noticeably gasping for air. In the second half he went mostly zone and made them have to hit long jump shots with tired legs. Not many games that the Hoyas will have the deeper bench. I refuse to believe that there is not a high ranking high school senior big man out there who can't see the opportunity this team would offer them next year with the incoming class. Even if Smith comes back there is no one else that would keep him from getting minutes. Aegba probably will not be back and Hopkins really is a 4. They have to see all the opportunities that Hopkins and Moses are getting and missing that would be theirs if they came to the hill top.

I like the option of Reggie down the stretch for free throws. This group needs to win close games and that skill is very helpful with this group. This. I love Jabril's game and intangibles, but kind of wanted him off the court in favor of Reggie in late game because of FTs. Then they both shot pretty well, so maybe the announcers were right about him working on his shot during injury.
