I have been following Georgetown baskeball on the internet as long as it was possible. I remember trying to get the radio stream on a 28.8 modem. (I wish I had the forethought to start broadcast.com.....) I have been on this board a long time as well.
I just want to point out that this place has become very, very negative. It is to the point where I am reluctant to stop by. I followed the game thread for today for a page or two until the negativity drove me away.
This year has been a struggle compared to team's of the past, but they are still the Hoyas, and they represent our school. No matter how invested any of us are with the hours we spend here, none of that matches the commitment of anyone on the team.
So I am just asking....is this the board we want? If not, then let's change it.

It's pretty easy to identify the trolls.
And then it's also pretty easy to block them so you don't have to read their bile (though it would help if people would quote them less).

The more the team struggles, the more negative the tone. That is probably the case for most programs. Hopefully today's game can serve as the start of much better things for our Hoyas - and for the board.

Sports fans (ie fanatics) are emotional when watching their teams play. Expecting calm, positive, rational posts on a message board during a game, especially while in the midst of an awful losing streak, is ridiculous. Honestly, if we can't rant and rave during on a message board during games than maybe we need to re-think the whole concept.

This site is just like politics...full of debate whether posters deem it good or bad.
What started the debate today in the game thread was Skyhoya made a comment a couple of days ago and of course if proven wrong
someone brought it back to him (i.e. Guru)
Either side could have left it alone but sometimes people need to get the last word.
Side Note: One thing about this board is that poster's will say when you are wrong but will not say a word when u are right.
And that in itself leads to confrontations.

This is about making this site a place people want to come. I doubt I am on the only who feels this way. Given the academic accomplishment (and likely professional accomplishment) of many of the posters here, some of what I have read is an embarrassment to all of us. |

We have to stop treating all of our sports programs like they can't be judged and they are just student athletes. The teams we play against don't act that way and are looking for results. We are paying JTIII enough money that he is accountable for this performance and those that support the program deserve a chance to sound off on what is happening. I feel like we treat everything with kid gloves but expect to go out on the big stage and compete. What perennial top 25 basketball programs in the major conferences would act this way or expect its fan base to act this way.
JWP91, get your priorities straight unless you want this program to fall into obscurity.

Every week someone takes it upon themselves to let the group here know what a miserable bunch of bastards this board has become and we need to stop being so hard on our poor little Hoyas because, aw shucks, they sure are trying their hardest. This season has been a disappointment so far, and one monumental win doesn't change that overnight. And even that monumental win was far from a stellar performance. There is still much to criticize and there will probably continue to be much to criticize. I am thrilled with this win and hope it can be a turning point in what was quickly becoming a lost season. But expecting things to be all cheery and positive, even in the midst of a big win, is somewhat delusional. |

There is, of course, a glaring difference between critiquing the program, the coaching staff, players' performances, and other specifics, vs. snide insults, vitriol and outright trolling. Forums like this will almost inevitably include both - just as they will include positive evaluations as well as pollyannaish(?) dreamers. The uncomfortable part is the infantile name-calling and personal(at least for the Internet) attacks. And the mods do a good job of discouraging those when necessary. All we can do is wade through or ignore the posts that offend, and keep on supporting the Hoyas, whatever form that may take.

Unlike most comparable talk boards following teams throughout the country this is by far one of the most rational and controlled forums that exist. Your Cooment, "Given the academic accomplishment (and likely professional accomplishment) of many of the posters here, some of what I have read is an embarrassment to all of us". is out of line regarding what i take this forum to be all about. Many of the major contributors to this forum over the years [whether you agree or disagree or find their comments to be below your standard] have never stepped foot on campus nor do all professionally and academically accomplished posters share a view would limit postings to ones that would meet your high standards. Yesterdays game thread was rather meek in comparison to some, let alone the old off-site gameday talk forum that was available for a few years. The comments are not only a bit elitist but also indicts the moderators who many would argue input a little too much control, but that control has provided for several years an extremely high level of discussion almost unparelleld given the medium.

Hopefully today's game can serve as the start of much better things for our House - and for the board. I agree with this. Georgetown had lost 4 straight and appeared to be in a complete downward spiral like the end of the 2008-2009 season, so the fans/posters are going to be a LOT more negative. |

I think most of the people that provided a positive slant to this board went over to Casual Hoya. Until that site opened, this site was the only game in town so you had a healthy balance of perspective.

I question the arguments posed that this board is negative; compared to many message boards out there, it has been generally more positive and compared to 10 years ago (for those that were around), even more so. A five game losing streak will bring out frustration among fans but this is not unexpected nor unusual for a fan base that has experienced much success over the past five years. As to site traffic, it has remained consistent (around 2000 per day) among Georgetown fans but is down among opponent fans, who frankly may not be aware of it versus brand-name sites like Rivals, Scout, or SB Nation. Then again, the requests from drive-bys wanting access with names such as "SURules2003" or "WVU#1" is a lot less troublesome. |

In many ways the tone of the comments on this board reflect the state of modern college sports in general and basketball in particular. One or two and done, sacrifice of traditional rivalries on the altar of the almighty dollar, etc have reduced college sports to the level of big money businesses and student athletes to the status of mercenaries (Josh Smith?). I will always love the Hoyas but not like I did 20-30 years ago. How can I truly commit to kids who I know will be here only 1-2 years? I was ready to join the Otto Porter fan club but Otto, who 2 years before, was just a nice kid from nowhere Missouri bolted GU in a nanosecond. If players won't commit to us and the University for at least 3 years how can they expect us to commit to them? Forgive the rant but I think complaining about the tone of some posts without also acknowledging the corruption of the sport misses the elephant in the room.

The sport has definitely changed, but I think it is possible to support the team and players despite the changes. I don't think it's fair to characterize Porter's situation as "bolting" from Georgetown. It wasn't a rash impulsive decision, but rather an good economical decision. Porter's choices were to go extremely high in the draft and guarantee a contract worth millions or to stay in school and roll the dice. While I personally would have loved for him to stay, I would not expect it - if I was in his position, I would have probably made the same decision. Granted, Porter's situation happened in 2013 because of NBA economics. If this was 1983, instead, Porter would have likely stayed longer, but it was just a different time and the benefit of leaving (i.e., a lot of money) was not as great. I understand the frustration relating to this, but Georgetown is rarely the type of program that loses players after a year or two, so I still think it's possible to get behind the team, and enjoy the success that comes with players like Porter. I do understand your frustrations though, and definitely see where this has changed the game, and in some cases, not necessarily for the better. |
