I believe the board requires confirmation from an OFFICIAL source, not just a self-professed insider. So when you become an official source, your info will be enough by itself. It's very simple. This is correct and has been a specific board policy since day 1 that is clearly stated in the board rules and was also quite clearly stated in the PM sent to rockhoya the first time rockhoya raised this issue on February 1.

No question, Hoyas would be pre-season #1. However, he is not returning, and I can't say that I blame him. I have said this many times now, Whitt's game is very similar to Porter's. We will be just fine with Whitt, Smith, Starks, Jabril, and Lubick. DSR, Hopkins, Ayegbe, Bowen, Domingo, and Bradley off the bench, along with the new guys will make an incredible team.

Don't include me in that "we" please. You know what you know (which is apparently nothing) and I know what I know. Don't get those two mixed up. As for why it wouldn't be allowed is because it is speculation either way. In this case it's speculation contrary to what the staff has relayed to others. I believe the board requires confirmation from an OFFICIAL source, not just a self-professed insider. So when you become an official source, your info will be enough by itself. It's very simple. I'm not advocating for anything so slow your roll. I was just asking why speculation was being allowed when it's clearly against board rules. Coach has said that there was a slim chance he could've returned this year. Why would we jump to speculating whether he'd even be back next year. Makes no sense. NOT ONE official source has indicated that the issue may be more serious.

When a player is ineligible for academic reasons, he has to regain his eligibility. Most of us certainly expect that Whitt is getting it done, but we don't know for sure. I presumed that was the original point about Greg. And if you do know, that is great. I'm not trying to pick a fight, we need Greg big time next year, even if Otto were to come back.

Otto is gone and I know it's crazy but for some reason I think our best team next year would be with Otto and an in shape Josh and without Greg.

How is this discussion still going on? Otto's status is that he is a sophomore that will likely go in the top 5 of the draft if he chooses to go that route. For him not to choose that route would be, all things considered, very likely a horrible one. It's not speculation to say that the decision that makes the most sense for the profession he clearly wants to pursue is to leave. I'd love him to come back but I don't understand why he would. If we, as fans, are hoping for one more year out of him, what would be the reasoning for one more year from his perspective? A championship that isn't remotely guaranteed? I'm all for fairy tales and utiopianism but come on.

tas, agree. how can staying make him better than a top 5 pick? the team has over achieved the last two years in the regular season. as far as the post season, something needs to be fixed

IF Otto were to come back - and I agree that there is virtually no chance of it - it would not be to improve his draft position. It would be because he wants to spend one more year in school, with his brothers, to enjoy this time and to see what they could accomplish, with Josh, Greg, et al. None of those may be any reason to delay making big money, or to risk a serious injury. Very few have come back under those circumstances, and there is no reason to think Otto will. Although we do know his family has had Otto follow an unconventional route before!

His use of "all speculation" referred to the prior poster "expecting" Otto to come out and Whitt to step into Otto's role. He then went on to say he did not know for sure whether Greg would be eligible or Otto would declare. Obviously he was not speculating about either, since he said he did not know either way.

Until some official source says otherwise the penalty for insufficient academic progress isn't going to change. Thats why theres a rule. when its violated the consequence is already determined. He's back next semester, period.

Discussing whether or not his penalty extends pass the rule that we were told he violated is speculation.

I'm all for fairy tales and utiopianism but come on. People are funny. Who are you or anyone else to judge whether a decision Otto will make for himself, based on his own set of criteria, would be a "horrible" decision if he were to stay? Let me just say: I fully expect him to declare, sign with an agent, get drafted, and be playing in the NBA next season. I will be surprised if he does otherwise. It's hard to imagine his draft stock getting higher. The money is there waiting. And how could he at least not factor in the injuries to Noel and Ware as part of his decision-making process. That being said, I think there's plenty of reasons he might decide to stay. The fact is, barring injury, Otto will be an NBA player. He might go really high this year, or just be an outside lottery pick next year, but he's going to make be in the league and make his money. But the money and playing in the NBA isn't necessarily everything. He might be considering a plethora of other factors: the NBA is a completely different lifestyle, perhaps one he doesn't want to live just yet; maybe he loves being in school (maybe not); maybe getting a degree is just as important a goal to him as getting into the NBA, and another year in school will make it easier to obtain later; he believes in himself enough to think he can stay another year, improve, have a chance at a championship, and still go as a top 5 pick next year; he has a girlfriend he doesn't want to leave; he has a puppy he doesn't want to leave while he's on the road. Let your mind go wild. Obviously I don't know what factors Otto is looking at. But there have been other lottery picks that have decided to stay in school before (coughROYcough!). Sure, it's likely he's gone. Would it be a horrible decision not to go? Well that really depends on what life Otto wants to lead right now and what his other priorities are. But that's not for you or me or anyone else to determine. Taking LSD and skydiving without a parachute is a horrible decision. Deciding to stay in school another year b/c he may have priorities that aren't all about the NBA wouldn't be a horrible decision, just a different one.

MOD NOTE: The thread topic is Otto Porter Jr not Greg Whittington. Further posts discussing Whittington's status will be deleted. You people have gone back and forth about this at least four times. Time to stop.

Since no one knows Otto's status and there is no news, let's lock this baby up until there is news.

I visit this site often, but rarely post. However, this thread is bothering me. I understand there are rules but stating "you people have gone back and forth about this at least four times. Time to stop" is just patronizing. If the board is going to be so official it requires rules, I think it's important that those who enforce the rules do so with class. We do not need to know that a PM was sent because people were unhappy with their posts. I come here because I like reading people's opinions, and have met awesome people in the process. I know we're on a message board and often that means civility and maturity are no longer governing, but perhaps we could do better?
