I can't stand that our great defensive performance is called ugly.

Why do we have to be embarrassed to say that was an awful game. You realize that III said those exact words, right? Happy that we won, but come on, that was awful

Yes it was an ugly game. I immediately thought, though, that come March it won't matter what the score was.

Lets get to the positives. We should move up the rankings a few spots. Tenn should be a tournament team. Our KenPom Defense Efficiency is going shoot up.

I was there and it was really, really awful on offense. It was actually pretty good on defense. I would feel even worse if we had lost, but really neither team deserved a W tonight.
Did we get any offensive rebounds at all? I don't remember any - it was pretty noticable how skinny our guys are compared to UT's bigs. A lot of the time that's OK because our guys are relatively quick and fluid; but tonight they got outmuscled.
I can't imagine feeling good about this game. Relieved, maybe.
I was there for the Temple game, too, when Greg put the team on his back the last few minutes and we got the win. This game felt worse.

Look, some people say FBS realignment is killing college basketball. I say we decided to do it first. It's called being proactive, you guys.

According to the box score, Otto and Greg both had 8 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, and 1 personal foul. So, you know, that's cooler than winning Powerball, probably.

Great call b&g... 1st round of the NCAAs in 1984 the Hoyas beat SMU 37-36 helped in large part by a Pat Ewing tip in of a missed free throw with 8 seconds to go. Of course we all know how that season finished up. Ugly win yes, but it is only November...

If you're the kind of fan who cares only about March and how the season finishes, that helps. That's not me, unfortunately.

BTW, Nate got two assists, a steal and a rebound against one turnover in 8 minutes of play. That's not poor play, especially in tonight's context. I didn't see anything that looked like an on-court injury. I wonder what's up.

Lubick hurt his elbow before the first media time out. He did not play after halftime.

A win is a win, but that was extremely hard to watch. You can be happy about a win while also being unhappy about how the team performed.

This will go down in the Anals of the worst games ever played. Sets basketball back 40 years.

Pre shot clock and pre 3 point shot, SMU held the ball for large stretches of the game. Also it was not in the first round but rather the second round. This was the year before the tournament expanded from 48 to 64 and we got a bye in the first round as a 1 seed.

If Mikael could finish a shot--literally ANY shot, including free throws--he has 20 points and we win 49-36. Ugly but not awful. But his inability to put the ball in the basket was devastating at points.

The negativity on this board is astounding at times. Obviously, it was a difficult game - ugly, hard to watch, whatever you want to call it. Our offense could have been better, but there are a few really great takeaways from this game:
(1) It's December 1, and our defense has thus far proven to be excellent. If we can keep this up, we should win a lot of games this season. Unlike Tennessee, we did get some good looks and we missed. Tennessee really didn't get a ton of open looks, and they only scored 36 as a result.
(2) We defended well against another team with pretty good big men. First Indiana, now Tennessee. Many of us (including me), thought that Hopkins would be a defensive liability this season. I actually feel a lot better about that after this game and the Indiana game, but Hopkins does need to pick his spots better on offense.
(3) WE WON. Any good or great team needs to win the close games. Clearly, this could have gone either way, but we WON. I disagree with the sentiment that "neither team deserves a win." We played excellent defense and won the game. Perhaps it's not our proudest win, but we should happily take it given the nature of the game.
(4) I actually thought our offense was better than the score showed. We missed a ton of easy shots. There is also a ton of room for improvement. Still, there was less of the pass around the perimeter and then throw up a three offense that has plagued us in past years. I am not saying tonight was a huge improvement on that, but our guys (including Hopkins) did try.
(5) We managed to battle and overcome injury to one of our starters, and still maintain great defense, even with a smaller lineup. I know people seem to like to pile on DSR's defense. While he can stand to improve, we managed to still have great defense, which is important. This game proved we could play smaller, and still beat a decently sizeable team.
(6) This game should make us thankful we have Nate Lubick. While I think the team did a very admirable job without him, the fact that Hayes, Moses, and Domingo came off the bench was directly a result of Lubick's absence. Neither of the three made huge mistakes, but all were tentative on offense (Hayes didn't really play long enough to know). Moses did have a key assist. After the Texas game, I imagine that trio will get a good bit more time.
We won. There's nothing wrong with some criticism, but at the end of the day, we won. Let's enjoy the win and look forward to walloping Texas on Tuesday.
