It does not even have to be hands on. Students want to feel like it is cool to go to a game and want to know that their friends are going, although they may be unwilling (or not predisposed) to find that out on their own. In that case, a generic e-mail from HB or the ticket manager is not going to persuade them, although these e-mails are definitely not harmful. What should be done is that HB should develop a rapport with RA's and Apartment Managers so that they can send out more direct e-mails to members of the floor or, better yet, develop their own promotions around the game (i.e. pizza party in the lounge at 6:00 for a 7:00 game in McDonough or pizza at 5:15 and hit the buses at 6:00 to get to the MCI for a 7:30 game).

Students may be pathetic, but they also aren't used to games selling out. They're so used to the never ending supply of available seats at MCI that they assume they can just get tickets when they walk up. Whatever, I wish it was sold out immediately too, but we still have a lot of work to do. That's a weak excuse, 2007. Now I know you and your legions are going to be out in FORCE and I commend you for it... but the reaction of Hoya students to hearing about an on-campus, national TV, post-season game shouldn't be "Oh yay... we play on Tuesday? Ok let's go to [insert name of trendy Euro bar here] and pre-game, then go to the game... there'll be tickets." It should be "Are you serious? ON-CAMPUS, NATIONAL TV, POST-SEASON? GIMMIE, GIMMIE, GIMMIE!!!" I was fortunate to be on-campus during the Sweetney Sweet 16 game against MD. But the two years before that and the year after were sad and pathetic - but like someone else mentioned, throw a game on campus (especially national TV, post-season) and the tickets would have been gone in a second simply because people can do the math (10k versus 3k). Students shouldn't be given the walk-up option. If they don't sell all the student tickets by the end of business today, they should all be dumped on people on the waiting list. At least they WANT to go.

BuffaloHoya has it EXACTLY right!
What really kills me is how much I've been looking forward to this game since it was first announced. Having been to the '93 UTEP game, I know how incredible a game at McDonough can be. But the atmosphere then was totally driven by students, and at this point I'm convinced that even if the student tickets do eventually sell out far too many will have gone to students who will go to the game simply because it was too early to hit the bars. That will ruin the atmosphere for the students who do care, and it will ruin it for me!

The apathy on the part of the students is apalling - especially the seniors which should be able to fill 1,000 seats themselves. Are you serious? The seniors are the one's who care the least. The Freshman and Sophomores are the most involved and Juniors are pretty good. But excpet for a small portion of seniors, most of them dont give a crap.

For example, I just got an HB e-mail about the ticket situation. The problem is that people who get the HB e-mails are the folks who are going to show up in an above average proportion. What they need to do is find a way to target those who are not informed already. I proposed the Dorm Captains strategy over the summer with FLHoya, and I think it still needs to be done. I haven't checked my email yet but that info wasn't sent out until someone told them to do it.

Ok, to all you alums out there, you need to remember that this is not the same Hoyas. Building? Yes. To 80's and early 90's levels? Of course not. The Dark Ages (ie. the Esh years) have turned off quite a few people, and believe it or not, a game against the hoops powerhouse of CAL STATE FULLERTON, ain't gonna get the fringe fans excited. If it was against Maryland at McD, it would be rockin, but any of the other shlubs in the NIT, I don't think so.
That being said, i have been pumped up for this game since it was announced, and have been telling everyone I know, and even some people I don't to get their asses to the game. And I think that students will have a generally good showing, even if its not the "good ol' days" fans that I hear so much about (yet for some reason I doubt that the picture you all give is without exaggeration).
Give this program some time. Give the fans some time. If JT3 rebuilds this program to being merely competetive in the BE, I guarantee that the fans return. Most current students can't even remeber a winning season, so don't be overly dissapointed if tomorrows corwd isn't yet up to expectations.

If anything a lot of seniors are finally psyched to have a winning team back again after last year. It's a student-wide problem, not simply seniors.

I think it's more of a "mommy and daddy already bought my plane ticket for Easter break" problem... I know students just pretty much take this week off, and a last minute basketball game isn't going to keep many of them from flying home. Lame. Utterly lame.

That may be the case, but I would suggest that the attendance rate is still better among frosh and sophs than the upperclassmen.

If anything, today's students ought to be more excited about - and I can't stress this enough - A HOME GAME AT MCDONOUGH ON ESPN than we were about UTEP in 93. Back then, the program was denied a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 14 years. THAT hurt. In contrast, this year the program has shown that it's finally on the way back up.
And we're supposed to only expect students to be excited about a game at McDonough on ESPN if it's against the likes of Maryland? Come on!
Elrobbo, I don't doubt that you're one of the good fans, and believe me we had plenty of worthless students when it came to hoops back when I was an undergrad, but if you have accurately depicted the general sentiments of the current GU student body, then shame on Jane and Joe Hoya '05-'09!

The only answer: Admit more from the Amtrak corridor south of NYC. In other words, continue the New Jersification of the student body. Joking aside, you hit the nail on the head.

Amen, more kids from VA, MD, DE, PA and NJ....well I'll include NY -- but only if they agree to buy booklets of shuttle tickets allowing them flexibility...

There is no way that you can expect a student who already has plans to go home to change their plane ticket at the last minute to see an NIT game. I wouldn't have changed mine, in all honesty. The students who are around, though, should all be there. And I would expect that at least 1250 students would still be around for Tuesday night!

I'd like to note that in 84-85, we had 2300+ student season tix holders, and with good reason.
Student support has been a little disappointing, but I remain c onfident that the day will come that bball is a priority again.
Just as I made the mistake of attacking the YAs for their lack of enthusiasm, we should not attack the student body. We need all the fans we can get, and our fans are just now relearning how to be fans- just as the team relearns how to win.
Give it time, the support will come.
