Because all indications are he's not good enough to play right now, but has the potential to be a good player 2-3 years from now. So you assume you can make him a serviceable player 2 years from now. Would you want that serviceable or better player for only 2 years or would you rather get as much out of him as possible. Plenty of BE schools red shirt players all the time for non injury reasons, Pitt and ND do it all the time. And when 4 years from now comes and he has a degree, is he going to stick around or is he going to go play overseas, assuming he is Big East-level "serviceable"? Is he going to stick around past sophomore year after seeing no playing time? The potential downside here (injuries, other factors making players ineligible and needing the depth) really outweighs the miniscule chance that you give up a fifth year of a serviceable player who wants to stick around.

I am not sure where I read this, but I thought I saw something about Hayes saying he was hoping to the in the league in two years. If he did say this then there is absolutely no chance he could be convinced to red shirt. I realize he is overestimating where he is right now, but that is irrelevant because he believes he is good enough

If he's good enough to leave before using up his eligibility then that's good news. But yes players do stay for their 5th year all the time. If he transfers because he's not good enough to get playing time then it's for the best for both parties. And I may be wrong, but it's pretty easy to just remove a red shirt if he suddenly becomes necessary for depth reasons, yes he won't have game experience, but he'll have practice experience, which is more than enough. Again I'm more thinking of Bolden than Hayes, but I would be fine with either or both getting red shirted if that's what the staff thinks would be the correct decision.

I think I'll rush out and bring the patio furniture in because it's supposed to be very windy and rain hard in October. The season is still 6 months off. We will all know a lot more by then, coaches and players too, in regard to injuries, health, ability, etc.

The great thing about Kenner is by the end of the second game we have a pretty good idea as to whether someone is a candidate for contributing freshman year.

Just reading this thread shocks me. Everyone needs to drop any and all discussion involving Hayes possibly redshirting. That's crazy talk. Time to stand behind this kid. Hayes could very well start at center this year. He will also likely lead the incoming freshman class in minutes played. All eyes should be on him in Kenner. We don't know how lucky we are to have landed this kid.

DSR will lead this class in minutes and contribution. Period.

Blueandgray, have you seen him play? Not calling you out, just curious because I don't think we've had many people on here who've actually seen him play so would be good to get some input.

He doesn't say that Hayes will be any good, just that he'll lead in minutes - which means that he probably just doesn't have any faith in our other options (Adams/Hopkins/Abraham). Possible he knows something about them that we don't. I still think this guy is riding pine for most to all of the year, unless someone can show me a video of him hitting a shot that's not a dunk.

Have not seen him play. More importantly, staff has and are VERY high on him.

In the videos, he does shoot layups. Maybe his jumper isn't effective right now...

I'm sure the staff is high on Hayes - they wouldn't have recruited him so hard otherwise. I'm high on his future too. But this is a guy who played pretty much one year of high school ball, not a whole lot of AAU, and who is very early in the process of learning to be a center. The potential is there, but asking him to start next year is asking a lot. If he plays even 5-8 minutes a game and helps out on defense with him length, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

You'll be more than pleasantly surprised. He could easily see 15 to 20 minutes a game.

I agree he probably will not play a bunch next year and anything he gives us should be considered a surprise, but he doesn’t have to be able to shoot to play defense… He looks athletic, quick enough, and has the size to help on that side of the ball right now to me....

I have confidence in our froncourt more so than our backcourt. DSR will have more opportunity for pt in front of him. Plus, a rivals reporter who is familiar with our team saw him play last week and he was unimpressed, fwiw. I'll just leave it at that I guess.
