Whats more annoying about this crap is not all the bogus reasons why Gtown wont play UMD, but that it gives UMD backers the opportunity to falsly claim that Gtown wont play ANY local schools.
Both teams have played 17 local teams the past 6 seasons (and thats if you count Delaware and Delaware st. as local teams, otherwise UMD has only played 14). And Georgetown hasnt scheduled fewer than 2 local teams in a season over the past 6 years (UMD had one season with no local teams except for Delaware st.).

But it's a fun trade when every article mentions some combination of: --UMD's athletic department is massively in debt --Because of the above, UMD is fixing to cut several programs --Kevin Anderson may well be in over his head --Randy Edsall

Two great shots at Maryland in today's Washington Post/Dan Steinberg's weekly "Atlantic 11" ranking/humorous asides from reader's about area college teams (can't find the electronic link, but the relevant passages are below):
No. 1 Georgetown (21-6) "You have to wonder what other sports St. Leo's is refusing to play the Hoyas in."
No. 5 Maryland (16-12) "After loss to Georgia Tech, AD Kevin Anderson announces that his teams will no longer play any school whose name starts with Georg."

Only down 13%? Would have expected much much worse with the season they have had. That is the benefit of an on campus arena. I think we're down more than that (18% I think) this year and we're playing for the #2 seed. Tomorrow. At 2PM sharp. On SNY.
I can't believe they have the nerve to complain about "only" 13,000 fans showing up to watch Miami play with the season the Terps have had. That's a great crowd for a good team, and a fantastic crowd for a crap team.

I like to laugh at UMD as much as the next guy, but through February 20th Georgetown's attendance was down 17.3%.

But our team plays in a city where they must compete with a myriad of other cultural and athletic entertainment options! The Twerps get to play in the wastelands of PG where, frankly, there's not all that much in the way of (legal) alternatives for the local yokelry to amuse themselves.

Attendance, sports-centrism, and unanimous school spirit will never be characteristics of Georgetown. I alternate between being disappointed by this and being proud of it. Its a university first, and an athletic institution second tenth(?), and always will be. With so many other of these programs, one can be forgiven for thinking that the latter comes before the former in the eyes of most alumni.

Their undergrads tend to stick in the area. Ours go everywhere. You're not wrong, but there's also basic demographics here.

Bringing this up in the context of a discussion about Maryland was a mistake on my part. The better comparison is to some place like Marquette or Creighton Actually I was just looking at www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/8753820042742b01b8b6be967b4a3893/Awide_Mbkbattlists.pdf?MOD=AJPERES, which doesn't account for this year's drop, but when you look at other low enrollment private schools, we stack up pretty well. I think there are two perception problems: (1) the number of visiting fans who make their presence felt; and (2) the massive capacity of our home arena.

There's no doubt Marquette has better support. I would love to have their fanbase.
If your standard is not Marquette (which may be the best attendance/undergrad population ratio out there), our biggest problems are that our arena makes a good 13,000 person crowd look small AND that so many people move to DC from other areas.
The number of Marquette alums in DC > number of GU alums in Milwaukee, I'd bet.

GU filling a 19,000 seat arena (off-campus, no less), is comparable to UMD - or any other large state school - filling the Rose Bowl for a basketball game. Our fan support is pretty great, all things considered.

For a state school that thinks of itself as a big rival to Duke, the attendance is sad. Ours isn't too bad considering, as many have pointed out, the size and nature of our school. I'd like bigger crowds, but we'd get them in spite of all the factors militating against it. Maryland should get huge crowds just for being huge, a state school, and having nothing else going for it.
