I am disappointed this thread has gotten to 4 pages. CasualHoya nailed the exact response Maryland deserves in one line in the Provvy Casual Awards. In deference to the mods, I will refrain from repeating it here.

I would've been fine with scheduling them if they agreed to a true home-and-home. But this is a ridiculous statement by a guy who is in charge of a multimillion dollar institution. You don't negotiate this in public, and I'd hope we don't play them as long as Anderson is AD. If we're looking to add another sell out to the schedule, let's go back to scheduling Duke or bring some other big name school into a home and home (UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, Florida). The Duke games are always a great atmosphere, and their fanbase, while Editedy, is much more palatable as human beings than Maryland's. ^^^^ This

Since UMCP deems itself to be the Harvard of College Park, let them schedule Harvard.
And oh, yeah, Kevin Anderson can go commit an impossible act upon himself.

In the "if you can't beat them, join them" department, Alex Lundy, who used to go to UMD and I think graduated, ran cross county for us this year - first time he got to the NCAA XC champs on a team - and is running indoor track. And, oh, yes, UMD was supposed to drop track; I am not sure that has been finalized. If so, former GU coach Andrew Valmon is out of a job, except for his Olympic gig.

What are we afraid of? Natural rival, not travel costs, two great programs. Play ball. This guy can't figure things out on the football board, so he certainly wouldn't get it on the basketball board.

Schadenfreude how I love thee. Maryland sucks. I'll bring the marshmallows to the "End of Maryland Athletics" party. I'm sure a Maryland student can supply the fire. They're good for that.

This is the only chance Gtown has to gain back market share in DC. UMD sucks right now in the main sports and is losing money, which will inhibit their growth and marketing. UMD fans are especially delusional about their basketball team (a friend and UMD grad told me today that he thinks they will finish 5th in the ACC and make the tournament), but with out marketing and with a sucky team for a few years the non UMD grads in DC can be pulled over to gtown's side.
And the best way to pull their fans over will be to play (and beat, hopefully) the teams UMD fans hate the most: Duke, UNC, etc. UVA is also a great partner with so many alumni in the area (they WILL fill the booth, but their orange is better than another type of orange). JTIII said this year that he has been trying to schedule a Kentucky series. Duke starts again next year and Memphis is now in the Big East (as an aside, if they join the BE next season, would Gtown still play at memphis in the non-con? guess not).
There is not a single benefit to gtown playing UMD in any sport that is unique to playing UMD. UMD/Gtown will never be a local rivalry like those in other areas (Duke/UNC, Kansas/Kst, etc) because the media will never give gtown a fair shake. If UMD is effectively a dead program, like say an Iowa State, Gtown can take back DC and much of the suburbs.

Jgalt I think you should suggest to your UMD friend's family that it is time to do an intervention. He is obviously on something to think they have any shot of making the tournament with a losing conference record which they will have. They still have to play @unc. Miami and UVA at home, I think they lose all three of those games.

Anderson is a dope. And the UMD fans know it. He screwed this up after the initial meeting with Reed by blabbing to the post, which delayed it (though I do think it would have happened). JT III has been open to it; and with Reed and Anderson being new along with Gary being gone - it would have happened. Who knows what the final terms would have been - I think both teams would have "caved" with it being a 2 year home and home with something like a coin flip to decide who goes first. I don't think we'd ever play in the BB&T on a regular basis but maybe every 10 years or so - JT III likes to travel with his guys to build some chemistry. This move was just so stupid. It MIGHT, might, have worked privately. Reed might have said - listen these are good matchups for lax, soccer etc - lets get this done. But publically - now g town would look like it caved and I don't think the pride has left mcdonough enough for that pill to be swallowed. Just stupid - it really isn't going to be done now - unless its completely on g town's terms.
I honestly don't care about them playing in b ball - I almost like that we don't. It would end up being pretty even if we played them every year - they would win a few / we would win a few. It would just happen - and we'd lose a recruiting edge which is something to protect.

The thing to really be concerned about is other scheduling -
Like it or not playing UVA, UNC, Duke, maybe Tech / Clemson etc - would be good draws for Verizon - and good for the team's development. Esspecially home and home's with those schools - get to experience terrible refs / hostile atmospheres etc. BUT - what should we do with the ACC given they continually raid our conference??? I really hope we stop scheduling cuse and pitt. I don't hate wvu as much for bolting because after those two left - i don't really blame them...well maybe I do - but i hate pitt and cuse more for jumping first. Just don't schedule them anymore
I stand by my assertion that if 10 years ago or whatever it was - if Florida State simply moves to the BE .... the BE is the dominate football and basketball conference - and no other movements need to be made. Imagine
For Football: UCONN, Cuse, FSU, Miami, Rutgers, WVU, Pitt, BC, Tech (i might be forgetting someone) for football. Seems pretty decent - and presumably the competition would have made some better. ( I know they might have needed to wait a year or two before UCONN jumped up) - also Nova might have been motivated to make the jump too.
For B ball - all those schools + SJU, g town, Nova, providence, seaton hall (again probably forgetting a school or two).
that is a strong conference in b ball and football. The ACC - all their good football schools (not sure you can call them good, but you know what I mean) are from the BE except FSU.

Now wait a second. UMD, a full member of the "Flush-with-ESPN-cash" ACC, is running out of money? They'll have to shut down a third of their intercollegiate sports teams and they'll still lose almost $15 million a year or two from now?
What happened? I thought the ACC made so much money that it was impossible for 'Cuse and Pitt to resist that siren song and abandon their longstanding colleagues and rivals to cross over to the dark side?
BTW, I still believe the BE will get a new TV deal that will bring lots of $$ to BE teams. OK, maybe not as much as some other conferences, but the difference on a per team basis is not going to be enough to justify the huge disruption in sports programs, scheduling, rivalries, additional travel costs, and a much more challenging road for their fans to travel to see their teams play.

This move by Anderson is incredibly stupid. Not only will it be a lot longer before this happens, but it will require a public apology for this move.
It's so idiotic one would think he did it on purpose to distract from other things, but that's giving him way too much credit.
For those who didn't listen to the John Thompson show yesterday he did an amazing job with this issue. It was hilarious.

Dan Steinberg @dcsportsbog John Thompson Jr. on UMD AD: "He is a very, very exceptional individual. He’s capable of directing the athletics at two different schools."

Talked a lot about how at any prominent school the athletic director doesn't make the schedule coaches do. I can't do it justice we'll have to wait for the audio to be uploaded to their website. Basically he did an excellent job of making Kevin Anderson look like an idiot with out doing it in a yelling or combative way. He also repeatedly kept asking for the Maryland AD's name again and again.
