The problem with scheduling Vanderbilt in all sports is that Vanderbilt doesn't have very many sports, at least on the men's side. In what I assume is related to the costs of maintaining SEC football and perhaps Title IX compliance, they only have six(!) varsity men's teams, and nine women's teams (we have eleven and twelve, respectively). I do fully support the idea of adding them to the basketball schedule, and the other sports we have in common.

What are we afraid of? Natural rival, not travel costs, two great programs.
Play ball.

Now let get this this straight.
GU v. NJIT in the Verizon Center, who cares, nobody shows up.
GU v. Maryland in the Verizon Center, SRO.
We need the money too.

Would have to be home and home series.
Why do you assume they wouldn't play in the Verizon center?
FWIW, some Maryland fans are promoting a three site rotation--Verizon Center, Comcast Center in College Park, and the third year at the 1st Mariner Arena (formerly the Civic Arena) in Baltimore.--Admin

Bring'em on. Let's settle this on the hard wood. I would have said the same thing last week, but UMD has set up a lose-lose for Georgetown. Option 1: Play UMD in men's hoops, and the Terps will claim that Georgetown caved to pressure because its field hockey/soccer/lax programs "need" the big state school. This is already being said on the WaPo's website in article comments. Option 2: Don't play UMD in men's hoops, and take heat in the local press for arrogance/aloofness/you-name-it. Frankly, I don't care what the WaPo is going to publish on this subject. I expect Georgetown not to be pushed around by other schools. I was fine with playing Maryland before the shoving started. Now let get this this straight. GU v. NJIT in the Verizon Center, who cares, nobody shows up. GU v. Maryland in the Verizon Center, SRO. We need the money too. Yeah, because if we don't schedule UMD, we're stuck with NJIT. And if we schedule UMD, all the NJIT-type schools fall of the schedule. Schedule Butler, Gonzaga, or Temple instead.

All sounds childish to me.
Two great programs, local rivals. Great local draw.
How did the conversation ever get to this point in the first place? What is the history of the negotiations between the AD's?
Seems pretty simple, you come to my house, and we'll come to yours.
What am I missing here?

Pops handled the situation (I thought) absolutely brilliantly on his radio show this afternoon. Essentially made Anderson look absolutely foolish without resorting to getting Editeded and outspoken. I'm sure a podcast of today's show will be made available later. Would recommend someone posting it/ taking a listen. Very entertaining

Seems pretty simple, you come to my house, and we'll come to yours. What am I missing here? For one thing, game at Verizon will end up with roughly 10,000 Georgetown fans, 8,000 Marylan fans. Game at Comcast Center will be like 15,000 Maryland fans, 3,000 Georgetown games. Hoyas never really get a home game. Now, if you mean McDonough and Comcast Center, that could be interesting...

I would've been fine with scheduling them if they agreed to a true home-and-home. But this is a ridiculous statement by a guy who is in charge of a multimillion dollar institution. You don't negotiate this in public, and I'd hope we don't play them as long as Anderson is AD. If we're looking to add another sell out to the schedule, let's go back to scheduling Duke or bring some other big name school into a home and home (UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, Florida). The Duke games are always a great atmosphere, and their fanbase, while Editedy, is much more palatable as human beings than Maryland's.

it ain't just about the money hoya parents..... you see we fund and have a hard time funding.... but fund 29 sports ..... Maryland has just cut from like 27 to nineteen ......for Georgetown it is MORE than just the money.. we do believe in student athletes on this campus... and do support 29 sports..... and probably ONLY men's bball makes money. so money... yes somewhat of an issue... but NOT the only issue thanks be to god .....go hoyas .... and please re learn the hoya history from the 1993 Joe smith game..... THEY WERE UNETHICAL DISHONEST AND SCREWED US ....yup our "HOME GAME" half the take and half the seats..... I KNOW CAUSE I HADDA MOVE MY SEASON TIX ....and then "their home game" at Cole hmmmmm a few hundred seats and not much money at all SOOOOOOOo remember that -please that's why we didn't give them the HOME game at Cole back NOT FAIR AND NOT WHAT WAS AGREEED UPON NOPE.. and when you sleep with dogs you get fleas..... so the history IS important. And the other story is that a MD and GU alum was gonna pay for Verizon to get them to play at Verizon ....half seats half gate .EACH ... JUST like the cap center game and i believe esherick agreed AND GARY WILLIAMS REFUSED THAT DEAL.... so the facts man the facts.. go hoyas...we will see but probably... they re going public on this and trying to embarrass us and bribe us and..... take away games for THEIR and OUR student athletes.....doesn't quite sound so kosher or moral or fair or just plain nice... SO IT AINT ABOUT JUST GEORGETOWN getting money.... nope not at all ..and i liked jt3s comment.. HE is trustworthy smart and for real go hoyas

Anderson's comments will have the exact opposite effect of what he wants. There is no way that the game get's scheduled now. Here is a question I have for those in the know. Had Anderson kept his mouth shut, would this game have happened in the next 3 years? I really wish we could have had a 50/50 game at Verizon. Split revenues and a racous atmosphere would have been epic.

Had Anderson kept his mouth shut, would this game have happened in the next 3 years? I really wish we could have had a 50/50 game at Verizon. Split revenues and a racous atmosphere would have been epic. Thing is, they won't agree to this because Verizon is our home court. Somebody gets the short end either way. If we have it as you propose, they get the short end because our team is very accustomed to playing at Verizon and it's a "neutral site" game in "our building". They know this, and that's why they don't bite. If it's at Comcast one year and Verizon the next, with tickets working the same as they would for any other home-and-home, then we get the short end because in our year at Verizon it's going to look and feel like a neutral site game. They know this, and that's why they push it. These are the kinds of things that stand in the way. Not to mention that you have Feinstein and others pushing for the money to all go to charity. I kind of think that we would have caved eventually. With Cuse leaving and the way the BE is changing, we're not necessarily going to have as many marquis games in the future as we're used to. And we need those--not just because asses in seats = $$$ for us, but because a game with high demand (a Cuse, a Duke, a Maryland) pushes people to make a donation and buy SEASON tickets. Otherwise, in a year like this year where there isn't any one game that's going to sell out, a lot of people decide forget the donation, forget season tickets, I'll just buy the games I care about on Stubhub or from a scalper or whatever. You need those 1 or 2 games a year where demand is off the charts to get people to bite the bullet and buy season tickets. This move by Anderson is just posturing/grandstanding though. Guy has been awful as AD. He hired 2 coaches--Turgeon may get better but has been mediocre so far, and Edsall has been horrible. NOBODY wants to play for Edsall right now, everybody on their team is trying to abandon ship. And he could have had Mike Leach, but blew it. He has only been AD for like a year but he has been awful every step of the way and once Edsall has another terrible year, his and Anderson's seats will really start to get hot. Not to mention that their Athletic Department is a financial mess and a lot of sports are on the chopping block. They're really in bad shape in College Park and the fans will be after Anderson's job pretty soon. He knows this, and so to try to gain some popularity points he's trying to pick a fight with somebody that Maryland fans all hate--mostly out of inferiority complex--in Georgetown. I don't think it will help. I like the UVA idea though (has been mentioned on here before)... They're a better hoops program than Maryland right now and certainly more of an academic peer than Maryland will ever be. Would be a fun roadtrip for our fans too, assuming it was one game at Verizon and one at JPJ.
