43.5% in conference play. Barely a drop-off. They've shot horribly in conference, turned over the ball and not played any D. Wow, that is amazing. I would have been really worried if this was last year' team, but I believe in Otto and Whit to get it done on the boards. Just play our B game or better and this is a W. We have no excuse not to beat any team that does not play good Defense this season.

Most of our fears about this game are based up history and tradition. This year's Pitt team is not the type they have historically fielded, but they are getting their best player back, they are desperate and we are very inconsistent lately. This is a dangerous game for that reason--not because it is Pitt. I would say the same thing if we were playing USF or Conn, or DePaul. Right now the Hoyas are winning despite their play on the offensive end of the court. With the talent on this team, there should be little doubt that this team would be top 4 in the Big East. Growing pains are tough though and each game is a struggle. The Pitt game will be no exception.

But some combination of Pitt's manifest desperation and the gambler's fallacy (that it must come up heads for Pitt at some point) makes me very nervous about this game.

It is my perception that Jamie Dixon and JTIII do not like each other. I don't know if it has to do with the Sam Young recuritment or something else in years past but Dixon always sells the Hoyas short in public - even after we snapped their 31 game home winning streak at the Peterson Center. Jamie never says that we beat them, they always beat themselves, blah, blah, blah. No credit is given to the Hoyas. Basically Pitt thinks they are tough and we are soft. Dixon recurits hard against JTIII's system and style of play. DeJuan Blair mocked us openly when they won at the Verizon Center a few years ago. Showed slighty more class than Dominique Jones but not much. Now that they are basically an ACC team and have begun their downward spiral a la Benedict Arnold College into college basketball hell somewhere undernearth the storied programs of Tobacco Road, they will be that much more fun to beat. Mark Nordenberg's move to take them out of the Big East bordered on criminal. And they left arm in arm with Syracuse. Do we need any more reasons to beat them like a drum? It's not just your perception. It's a real thing.

Pitt is not particularly good at forcing turnovers (318th in the country) or defense in general.
I think we had one of our lowest turnover games against them last year and they blew our doors off early. Gibbs and Wannamaker came out and couldn't miss from 3. But Gibbs is not the same kind of player without Wanamker to set him up.
If i recall correctly wright picked up 2 early fouls and the offense floundered with Markel and V. Think we hung pretty good with them on the boards. But Gibbs went for about 11 staight points in a couple of minutes half way through the game and it was over early.

Got to make Gibbs put it on the floor. He is really scrapping this year but he's better than he has played so far. They're not a horrible offensive team because, as always, they are one of the better offensive rebounding squads around. Limit the second chances to a reasonable amount.
They have been utterly horrendous on defense so far this year. Unbelievably bad. So bad that I don't really know what to make of it. Our offense has not looked sharp at all the past four or so games but if there's anyone we should be able to score efficiently on, it's this Pitt squad.

We are not always good at extending to shut down the 3-point shot, but if we can't do it Saturday, when Gibbs is by far their primary weapon, we have not been paying attention. Some conbination of Jason, Jabril and Greg should be able to keep him in check.

It's not just your perception. It's a real thing. To echo KG's point--it's real and I'm glad. I hate Pitt. I hate that city, their fans, their team, Jamie Dixon's cornball haircut, his preening, stomping, whining Crean on de-caf act, and his talk of "tough guys" even though when games get tough--like say in NCAA's-that program folds like a tent. How can you talk about a peer when that guy has done more then you have as a coach? Until you get to a Final Four, I think toughness is last thing you need to be discussing and until your team has skills other then fouling and getting away with it in BE play and then acting shocked when it gets called in NCAA's-then you need to shut the hell up. I hope Pitt goes winless in BE, Dixon stays there as they move to ACC where they become irrelevant--because if they choose to continue to play the style they do--that's what will happen to them in that league--where if you breathe wrong on a Duke/Carolina player--you will get called for fouls. So see ya scumballs and hope the parting gift is an ass kicking on the goofy homecourt in that cesspool of a town.

I don't know last time I checked we were #1 in the BE at defending the 3pt line and 14th nationally. I think we do it quite well.

I don't know last time I checked we were #1 in the BE at defending the 3pt line and 14th nationally. I think we do it quite well. Yeah, we have breakdowns like every team, but our perimeter length really helps us. And some of our guys -- like Whittington -- probably overplay the perimeter shot more than they need to -- but that may be by design. I'm with RDF on Dixon. He actively negatively recruits against us on system and pace -- even though his team is just as slow paced and actually pretty similar. It certainly hasn't gotten any perimeter players to the pros. He started out as quiet coach but has become such a sniveling whiner on the sidelines that even his own fanbase has become uncomfortable with how bad he is (if their Rivals board is any indication). His teams aren't all that tough or good at D and his players are constantly amongst the overcelebraters in stupid situations (think Carl Krausers premature chest bump or Dante Taylor, who has a different "dunk dance" for every time he dunks but hasn't developed any game past that in three years -- and displays them down by 15). His school is reprehensible, the fanbase entitled. They are the #2 public University in PA and always will be -- and like the #75 overall University but they think they have some god-given dictate to be a top program (see Rutgers). The only thing I disagree with RDF is that Pittsburgh isn't so bad of an overall place. It's pleasant? I mean, I don't want to live there, but that hardly disqualifies it.

Pitt has not won a conference game and has a near .500 record. No way we should lose this game. No excuses.

For some reason, I think Hopkins will get minutes and make a nice contribution. I like the match up for him.
I too have more faith in our D than our O...and think our D is what will win it for us versus Pitt.
