Markel's injury/sickness can provide minutes for Jabril to get confortable brnging ball up against the press. Right now he and Whittington look a little timid but Jabril once he breaks the press has the strength to take the ball all the way to the hoop. Henry got several putbacks after Jabril drove to basket and was challenged by Demons big man leaving Henry a bunny at the basket.

- Fantastic game by Jason Clark. One of the best we've seen from a Hoya in a while, no matter the competition and it should be recognized.
- The turnovers are really frustrating. Yes, some were Otto against the press, but we had our fair share of the same old crap. The free throws will correct; the turnovers will likely plague us all season.
- That said, this was still a decent win. It's not like DePaul sucks anymore, and they were making some really tough shots. Yes, we could have beaten them by 25 without the Turnovers and with some better FT shooting, but we could have lost as well.
- We won this game on the boards. We held them to only 10 offensive rebounds in 40 misses (25%), and got 17 of 32 chances on our end (~56%). Georgetown will always be overrated by rebounding margin (high TOs and good shooting) but we really dominated the boards and earned this win.

The Hoyas went to the free throw line far more than DePaul. End of story. Yeah, they missed a lot of FTs but the point is they were aggressive. They were running on the break too. This led to more points and more scoring opportunities. This allowed Gtown to get to 80 plus points for the first time in a long while. If the Hoyas had been stuck in the 60s again they lose. Like they did at home against Cincy.
Lots to work on. But if the Hoyas are aggressive then they have a chance to make a dent in the post season. They need to stay aggressive on offense.

We're going to miss free throws because of the freshman. But in the last couple games I've seen Jason, Sims and Hollis miss alot of free throws and that shouldn't happen.

Yeah, but Otto had 5, and a lot of that was from handling the ball when he otherwise wouldn't. Hey, he's gotta learn sometime. Let him work through his mistakes. The Hoyas need him to become a more confident ballhandler. In fairness to Otto, at least he was in a position to make those turnovers if that makes any sense. He was the only guy who always seemed to be open or came to the ball against the press. Nobody else was really doing that when Clark got trapped on the inbounds. That was the problem vs Louisville. Nobody else on the team was quick enough, strong enough or big enough to help out Clark when he got trapped. And in that game Otto was inbounding it alot. Being invisible against the press is just as bad if not worse. I think Trawick has the handles to also break the press or getting open but I think Whittington and Hollis are not very good at that.

Not sure I understand the connection between freshman and missed free throws. Jabril and Mikael have two of the highest ft percentages on the team (I won't count Adams who leads with 100%). I'd be more comfortable with either of them at the line lately instead of Jason and Hollis who have been inexcusably brutal. Obviously the scoring punch Jason and Hollis provide is huge, but they'd be putting games way out of reach if they hit their free throws.

You can look at most career stats and you'll see that free throw percentage will go up from freshman to soph to junior, etc. Part of it is just repetition but alot of it is also freshman jitters. The difference between shooting freethrows at your local highschool in front of 3000 fans and at the Verizon Center or MSG in front of 10,000 on national TV in the Big East. I think this is true with Porter and Whittington. If someone is a good free throw shooter to begin with then they are going to shoot at a higher clip even as freshman. Probably the case with Jabril. Not sure about Hopkins since he's shot a smaller sample size.

On Markel Starks: "He has--and this is not the trainer's definition or the doctor's but--something going on with his stomach. I found out after we got here. We were getting on the bus and he said he wasn't feeling well he's been throwing up and having stomach issues and then once he got here, he just said he felt too weak, told me he couldn't play." Also of note great to see Jason find his shooting stroke in this game. I think he hit as many three's this game as he had in the rest of the BE games combined. another thought: how crazy is it that Hollis shot 50% from 3 and that's below his average. The play where DePaul bounced the ball of our player to get the easy score. I know it's perfectly legal and there's no real reason why it shouldn't be, It just seems so wrong to me that you can do that. Did he establish himself inbounds on that play? Poor Markel... hope he soon recovers from his gastroconcussion. I sure hope its that, tho, and not morning sickness.

RE: breaking the press. You don't dribble through a press (you will usually lose the ball). You pass through it. I don't know how much Markel would have helped. The answer is to continue to work on it in practice. To press for the entire game you needs lots of depth as it takes a lot out of the pressing team. As you will recall, DePaul couldn't get any rebounds in the last few minutes, either defensive or offensive. They were tired.

any road win in this league is a good win, especially when you are down a starter. the turnovers were frustrating but that's going to happen when your PG is out. good job by the young guys to answer every run depaul had in them.

Hollis and JC have alot on their plate trying to carry this team. I think fatigue, which effects your concentration, may play a factor in recent poor FT shooting.

If anyone recorded this game, make a copy for Jason so he can send it to NBA scouts. Being the primary ball handler and also getting 31 points is a monster performance. Plus he played almost the entire game so I can excuse the late missed foul shots, all of which seemed to come up short. Of course his foul shooting was the same earlier in the game.
As for Otto, it's been a long time since the Hoyas had someone who had such a nose for the ball for rebounds. He is fantastic in this part of his game. The rest will come.

Agree on all points. As far as Jabril, I agree that he is strong but his handle needs work. Markel has the best handle on the team. Otto had some TO's but, for a guy his size, I like him bringing the ball up.

Who knew Shomnick was such a promising rebounder? I remember the latter portion of his career being entirely ho-hum.

Otto's the best pure rebounder we've had pound for pound since JYD and John Turner
