He would have been a really nice addition for us but it seems he made a well-considered decision. Best of luck Mr. Pollard.

www.clarionledger.com/article/20130503/NEWS01/305030017/Former-teacher-denied-bond-in-kidnappingNot long after 6-year-old Jashayla Markayia Hopson didn’t make it home Tuesday on her East Kemper Elementary school bus, her mother received a chilling text message. It read: “dont call the police I will call you later if you call the police u wont see her again.” The woman who kidnapped the little girl from her school and sent the text, federal prosecutors allege, is Jessie Mae Brown Pollard, 54. Pollard is a well-known and well-liked former West Kemper County High teacher and girls’ basketball coach who, after 21 years as an educator, recently moved to Alabama from her lifelong home in Porterville in Kemper County. Pollard was arrested by the FBI Wednesday night at her Northport, Ala., home. Her three sisters who appeared at her hearing said Pollard moved there less than a year ago to be near her son, Devonta Pollard, an 18-year-old freshman basketball player for the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. He was named Mississippi’s “Mr. Basketball” by The Clarion-Ledger in 2012 as the state’s top high school player and was named to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game.

i didn't have a good feeling about her when she let it be known on several occasions that she would be the main decision maker in her son's recruitment.

Isn't it possible that she was protecting the child against some suspected child abuse? Of course, she could also just be crazy but wouldn't jump to too many conclusions yet.

Not likely when you don't report the abuse to the authorities or when you send a text stating "don't call the police or you won't see her again" to the child's mother and last but not least you don't leave a 6 year old on the street by themselves if you're looking out for them.. Terrible actions by Ms. Pollard!!

Pollard transfer? Strange, no prob wasn't protecting child if there was a "dispute" with the child's mother. Geez, Ms. Pollard you could GO TO JAIL! ....

I'm not condoning her actions by any means but people should pump the breaks with acting like they know the details of the situation. It sounds like she did something horrible, but none of us knows what actually happened.

I wish the Pollard family the best as they address this unfortunate issue. I trust that DeVonta stay focus as he continue his education.

I remember cringing during his recruitment from the stories of his overbearing mother walking on to the court to yell at him during AAU games. Shocking to see that she has now ruined his life.

I truly wish the best for him.
On another note: It just shows the character of the student athletes that come to the Hilltop. This school is prep to become great citizens and role models after their time here.
