I must say—and I only do so from the safety and security of my own office, where no projectiles from any of you can reach me in any form other than verbal—that I root for any BE team over any non-BE team. And I do so for three reasons: (1) It increses the stature of the BE. (2) It makes our numbers better when we beat them. And (3) It makes it more soul-crushing for them when we beat them. Think about it. If Syracuse were a middling team ranked 24th last year when we mercilessly beat them, would it have stung so bad? I don't think so. I think it hurts them the most when their expectations are the highest. So let them win and win and win. And then let us destroy them, leaving nothing but fiery wreckage in our wake. Agree 100%. I want what is best for the Hoyas and what is best for the Hoyas in this case is a Syracuse win - on many levels. There will be plenty of opportunities to root against the Orange once conference play kicks off.

In the abstract, I think it would be good if Syracuse won the game tonight, because it would be good for the Hoyas. Therefore, if I wake up tomorrow and see that Syracuse won, I will be OK with it. Will I be happy? Hell no. But I will be satisfied with the result.
HOWEVER, if I happen to turn the game on, I'll be rooting against Cuse 100%. Once I see those orange jerseys running around, all rationality is thrown out the window and the pure, unbridled, and glorious hate takes over. Not only do I want Cuse to lose, I want them to miss every shot and not get a single stop on D. I want whoever they're playing to beat them by 100.
I remember at the 2007 BET, Cuse had the quarterfinal game right after ours, vs. ND. We played the winner. Before the game, I was thinking that I wanted Cuse to win that game, because I wanted to experience the glory of beating Cuse in the BET, and because I thought they'd be an easier out than ND.
But once the game got going, I realized there was no way I could actively hope for Cuse victory, or even avoid rooting against them. It was simply not possible. I *had* to root for Cuse's opponent - there was simply no other option.

Along the lines of what Stig said, if you can't bring yourself to root against Syracuse because of all of these alleged side benefits of a Syracuse win, my best advice is simply not to watch the game.
Then you can check SportsCenter or ESPN.com later and if they won, well, there it is and you won't have sullied yourself in the process.
But if you watch the game, and Syracuse gets an and-1 to take the lead in the second half, and you find yourself - even subconsciously - saying "Yes!", I promise you, you will have done irreparable damage to your immortal soul.
Irreparable.
However, I cannot force anyone. Despite my warning, do as you choose. But be prepared for the emotional and spiritual consequences.
Also, I think this goes without saying, but in case anyone was even remotely considering it, betting on Syracuse is strictly forbidden. I don't care if you are getting 25 points plus odds. No matter how much money you win, there will be a special place reserved for you in Hell, where you will share a room with Eric Devendorf, Gerry McNamara and Stevie Thompson for all eternity and they will make you watch the 2003 NCAA Tournament over and over every single day (probably while they violate you...or each other).

As a New Yorker (the city), we think Syracuse is as country as Alabama. That;s why most city kids are either Johnnies or Hoya fans!
Boehoime has always been overated and schedules soft, I'll root for MSU!

Go to the Carrier Dome and get verbally/physically assaulted by their fans (as I and several other talkboard members have) and then come back and tell me you want to root for them.
Yeah, I don't think so.

Boehoime has always been overated and schedules soft, I'll root for MSU! Except a ton of people from NYC/Long Island/New Jersey go to Syracuse. In fact, I would say a majority of the Syracuse undergrad population is based within a 50-mile radius of madison square garden. And they alllll move back after graduation, which mean the city has a TON of syracuse fans and I expect MSG to be pretty pro-orange tonight. Syracuse advertises all over Manhattan. Apparently they are "NY's college team" (which is basically a slap in the fact to SJ/SHU, etc but I digress). Anyway, under no circumstance should anyone root for Syracuse tonight. Syracuse sucks and should lose every game they play. And we should root for whomever they are playing against. All the time.

Rooting along conference lines is something that a fan is more likely to do when their school is down/middle of the pack. Georgetown is up. The nominal bump that the Hoyas would get for Syracuse having an extra quality win really isn't worth the trouble to root for the devil tonight.

If a horde of Syracuse fans were ceaselessly beating you with their empty Thunderbird bottles, I would spit upon your bloodsoaked carcass. Okay, just kidding - but c'mon, Suckacuse? Boz is absolutely positively spot on. Under no circumstances can you ever justify rooting for Satan's spawn. If the Orangeboys were playing for the fate of the world, I would gladly welcome the void into which we would all be dumped after they lost.

This can easily be figured out with math. The preface: +1 for good things, -1 for bad things:
Cheer for SU (-1) + SU Wins (-1) + RPI goes up (+1) = -1 Cheer for SU (-1) + SU Loses (+1) + RPI goes down (-1) = -1 Cheer against SU (+1) + SU Wins (-1) + RPI goes up (+1) = 1 Cheer against SU (+1) + SU Loses (+1) + RPI goes down (-1) = 1
The only net positives occur if you cheer against SU. Thus, the only rational action is to cheer for Michigan State. QED.

I am not physically, mentally or emotionally capable of rooting for Syracuse......no one else on this board should be either. I live in the heart of SU country.....about an hour away from the city, but they are hugely popular here and words cannot describe my hatred!! Nothing good can ever come from a Syracuse win......NOTHING!!!!!

I was promised there would be no math in this thread.
But regardless, I'm cheering against Cuse. Logic goes out the window the second I see that prison-jumpsuit orange.

Cannot root for Cuse unless there is a direct and immediate benefit to the Hoyas.
I blame the BCS for all of this lovey dovey root for your biggest rival because it helps your conference stuff. It's one thing to root for SJU or Louisville or even Nova OOC. It's a whole nother animal to root for Cuse. There isn't enough soap in the western hemisphere to wash that off.
