I feel this Hoya team will have a great season but recent (JT3) history would indicate they will probably lose this game. The press of Missouri is the reason I believe the Hoyas WILL win this game because it will bring out the intensity of the Hoyas and our guys can flat out get up & down the court when the situation arises. I do feel the team will stumble before BE play but I think the Mizzou press brings out the best in the Hoyas.

Not that I disagree with the scheduling decisions, but the comments today about needing to play top-flite competition day in and day out for league play seem off. Our problem last year is that we sucked against the crappy teams. That's where we need improvement, not in the games with bright lights and plenty of scouts.
So, why not fill out the schedule with crappy teams so we can practice taking them seriously?

So, why not fill out the schedule with crappy teams so we can practice taking them seriously? JT3 said he put the challenging OOC schedule together for two reasons; to get them ready for the BE games and to keep them focused every game. Some players just have that personality, they are "laid back". Last year two of the starting five were that way Monroe and Freeman. Both great players but it seemed hard for them to get up for lesser teams. Freeman's illness probably had a lot to do with him trying to save his strength against lesser teams. This year the schedule plus Freeman's knowledge of what was causing his fatigue and the correct medication, have him on pace to have one of the best seasons a Hoya has had. [/ducks]

I think the Utah States, UNC-Asheville's, ODUs, App States, Woffords on this year's schedule fit in the mold of either the USFs or the Ohio's, that we need to up our performance against.

...and lets say during tourney time we beat a couple of those "mid-level" teams? i'd say having the Mizzous, etc. is a good thing. Plus it's not about the team necessarily for JTIII, it's about playing teams with different STYLES to prepare us for BE and beyond...i think it's smart.

Do not get destroyed on the backboards and limit the turnovers and we should win this. His storically though we lose this kind of game.

His storically though we lose this kind of game. That's what you said before NC State. Is this your new juju mantra to ward off evil spirits and horrendous charging calls? If so, I fully support that. And I apologize if I missed the joke somewhere earlier. (If not, cut it out! )

This will be a great test because Mizzou is strong where we (think we) are weak. Forgive me for stating the obvious, but we also need to stay out of foul trouble (oh, and hit free throws ;D). We can't afford to have Wright or Freeman pick up cheap ones. We might be able to sustain fouls on the big men, but if our senior back court controls the game, we win.

limit turnovers especially those in play.Mizzou scores off transition steals. our half court needs to get alot better tonight while the defensive intensity appears to be better the mental mistakes on rotations the overplays that end up with wide open shots has not. I'm a ;ittle concerned that without Monroe as both a ball handler and an outlet we may have some problems breaking pressure. i fully expect us to attack the basket hard when we do. need another big game from Hollis and we should be fine.

This will be a nice early test of how far we have come, and a glimpse of how far we can go. It should show how important senior leadership is, and will show whether we can keep our composure against an athletic pressuring team. Let's be good with the ball, hit the glass, and take good shots, and we can get a big preseason win. Hoya Saxa!

We start 4 guys who can handle the ball against the press and can bring in a couple more from the bench. We should be OK if we move the ball diagonally and attack the basket once we get past the first line of the press. I like this matchup in terms of getting the team ready for what Nova and Louisville will try when the Big East season begins.

I'm sure the talking point for the announcers will be pace - Missouri goes at 145 possessions per game (O and D - adjusted for competition) and Georgetown goes at about 134. In rankings, it's like 200 places. In reality it's 11 possessions over 40 minutes, which means the average possession time goes from about 18 seconds to 16.5.
Which is stunning, I'm sure. The reality is, Georgetown runs at an average pace now and has never really had trouble running. I doubt we'll slow it down, but I think it'd drive Mizzou nuts.
The real issue is likely TOs: Mizzou forces 30%! of their opponents into TOs. Of course, the competition has sucked horribly and that's not an adjusted number. They also offensive rebound decently but the same caveat applies. They block some shots, but again.
Here's the downside for Mizzou: their crappy competition has shot pretty darn well against them. And Mizzou has fouled a lot. So it doesn't seem like their defense is much more than the turnovers. If we can get past them, we might get a lot of open shots.

We have become much better at attacking the basket after breaking the press - but we have to keep control of tempo, not turn it into a track meet. Pick our spots to attack and we will come out on top.

I think this game is going to come down to turnovers. We are going to shoot better than them, if we turn it over too much they are going to get way more shots than us and win by quantity vs quality.

Here's where having 5 guards that can handle the rock will come in handy. I agree that if we can limit the turnovers and not get sucked into taking anything and everything when we beat the press (i.e. being intelligent about being aggressive), I like our chances. I really can see this game going either way.

any time you have the number 9 vs the number 16 team play it is going to be a toss up. Esspecially this early in the year, the polls are probably directionally correct, not perfect. Coaches may be expirementing with lineups, defenses, etc. And the teams haven't had that long to gel.
so yea - 50 / 50 game tonight. as has been said turnovers will be the biggest stat to key a victory for either team in my opinion.

I'm feeling good about tonight's game now that gotleib has picked Mizzou to win by 8pts saying that if it was in columbia they'd run away with the game.

Our upperclassmen will have no problem with the press. They have seen everything tossed their way. Chris will be focused and have a ton of assists. Mizz will go nuts with all the dfferent ways we'll score. By the end of the night, Gotdweeb still will not be a believer.

I think we can beat it, but our past problem is we continue at a frenetic pace and rush shots or make impossible drives to the bucket. I want to see us practice beating the press and then getting into a 10-15 second offense.

If we're ahead, they'll foul us if we take it out for a 10-15 second defense.
