And yeah, I blame the Packers for Favre. He wouldn't be the golden boy he is today (well, maybe was) if it weren't for all the bs about the frozen tundra, and Titletown and small town football and blah, blah, blah, blah. I suppose the 70,000 yards and 500 TDs have nothing to do with it. All the big name QBs get slurped incessantly - Brady, Manning, Marino, Elway, Montana, etc. Farve is no different. It's probably just me, but on that list, I would rank the Old Bullslinger last as a quarterback (which is no disgrace - that's a darn good list), but first in slingin' the bull. Which is why I always applaud his game ending picks, but never did so for any of the others on that list.

I think there's something qualitatively different, at least with Gruden and Favre. Gruden's gushing is beyond unseemly. Also, it's amazing to me that the announcer's meme at the end of every close game is the inevitable Favre comeback, when actual Favre-led comebacks have been few and far between in the last several years. Last night's ending was more the norm.

Gruden also coached Favre in Green Bay when he was on Holmgren's staff--so that might have a bit to do with his man love for Brett--but at least Gruden can be objective and point out flaws/bad plays the Hillbilly King makes.
KC Hoya is also right--and to be even more specific--Gruden loves every QB that has ever taken a snap.

I must admit that I don't know where I sit on this whole issue.
Obviously, the clearest and most undeniable opinion for any real "fan" who doesn't have -- or can, at least put aside -- any "dogs in the fight," so to speak, must start with the fact that Favre thinks he is bigger than the sport. He thinks he is "above" preseason workouts, not to mention, rudimentary exhibition games -- at least for the most part.
While this is certainly not a viewpoint you would prefer, much less encourage, the real question is just how much, if any, bigger is he than the sport beyond this issue. I think it's clear that he still has talent, and beyond that of many younger NFL QBs. But he also has at least, and most likely an even bigger opinion of such a disparity in talent. I don't think there is any question as to why Moss was traded to his team, rather than Favre being traded to the Patriots . And obviously, with a healthy Brady, that comment was somewhat tongue in cheek, but still, I think that point that there is an attitude that Sir Brett has that would not be welcome in the Patriots' clubhouse, much as there was enough motivation offsetting Randy's presence there.
As for any praise from Gruden -- warranted, excessive or otherwise -- I think that he is simply doing his job. Maybe I am falsely optimistic and hopeful, but I like Gruden and though I stop short of fully believing all of his stated opinions, I don't think he has much ulterior motivation, at least aside from the paycheck, specifically related to his current job description.

My question is how long until Peyton passes all of Farve's all-time records except for interceptions thrown? 5 years? I know Peyton won't have to play until hes 50 to get them.

Fortunately you can't do much worse then what they did with Oregon. Packer's yellow and green are much better then Oregon's.

I really don't understand this line of thinking for the teams. Yes, I get that Nike can sell a few more jerseys, but at the cost of diminishing the impact of the team's logo....OK, maybe not TECHNICALLY their logos, but their identity. Heck, when they do those retro jersey weekends, you have no idea which team is which when watching the weekend highlights. How can that be good for teams? The whole idea of a uniform is for the team to have a.... uniform.... look! That's why they are called uniforms!

I recommend that they start with the Steelers. After they're bloodied and bludgeoned, we'll see what they do next.

While we're on the topic of uniforms, can we get rid of the pink already?
Look, I'm all for breast cancer awareness, don't get me wrong. And the first weekend they did it, it probably had a positive effect in raising awareness. So good for that.
But it it still having any kind of effect, other than to look simply ridiculous? Do they really need to do this the ENTIRE month? Hey, why not all season? Next month is AIDS awareness month, so they could continue it for that (AIDS awareness is more red than pink, I guess, so there'll be a lot of replay challenges, I suppose). It's also Alzheimer's and Diabetes awareness month in November, and God knows, American football fans need to be on the lookout for diabetes.
Sorry to be a mean, evil person, but I guess that's what I am.

There used to be a huge stigma associated with breast cancer and masectomies keeping someone from being desireable (I remember one or two SNL skits that dealt with this). While embracing the fight against breast cancer was important a decade ago, now almost everyone has a story of a friend or relative who's suffered. I recently read where someone suggested it was an effort to get out more pink clothing for the female market, and I tend to buy that explanation more.

Is there anyone in America that doesn't know about breast cancer or that it's bad? I think there's a breast cancer 5K being run every 72 seconds somewhere in the country.

That was my point - when lots of people began doing breast cancer awareness, it was shunned. Now, it's not.

I think the merchandising angle is almost certainly what is going on.
Sorry to go all "hifi" here, but a quick story: Last weekend's Ravans-Broncos game was not on local TV, so I went to a bar to watch, joined by a female friend who pretty much just wanted to look at Josh McDaniels.
It was downright uncanny. Despite the Ravens owning the Broncos all over the field (for the most part), there was one camera shot of John Harbaugh in the entire second half.
In that same time span, there were no less than two dozen camera cutaways to Josh McDaniels on the sidelines.
If my friend hadn't told me to be on the lookout for it, I probably wouldn't have noticed, but I think there's very little question that this was done for female fans, who I've heard have a thing for this particular coach.
Too bad he'll probably be out of a job at the end of this season.

Might take awhile, actually, although if anyone's game lends itself to still playing at a high level at the higher end of the QB service life, it's Manning's. The Indianapolis Star has a handy tracker with 4 of the main records: www.indystar.com/article/99999999/SPORTS0301/100916010&template=interactivePeyton may pass those records this weekend against the Redskins. Hahahahaha I certainly hope so, as I will be at the game.
