Jackson has no shot at SJU....no one does unless you kiss the AAU's coaches arse in this city. They all want a guy named Gary DeCesare to take over SJU. They have a list of who is acceptable at St Johns and who is not. Crazy but true.

SJU should hire MARK JACKSON. He supposedly wants to be the Knicks head coach so Jackson should go resurrect his alma mater for 5 years and then be ready to actually lead the Knicks. You know SJU would get a lot of NY kids if Jackson was there. I know Mark is comfortable commentating but I believe he is a competitor at heart and if they can scrape together big $$$ for Donovan why not Jackson? Not sure NBA guys are equipped for the long haul (Drexler at U. of Houston, Theus at New Mexico State)

If you look at the front page as well as the sports news, you can see all the people that Seton Hall and St. John's are targeting right now, but failing to get.
I mean, Georgetown usually gets a bad rap for being overly secretive about these matters, but is anyone else happy about it? I mean, it would have been nice to have known who JT III beat out for the job in 2004, as it's human nature to be curious (it goes without saying that we made the right choice). But do we really need to know every person that turns down the job before the position is filled? The media can make schools like St. John's and Seton Hall look pretty embarrassing in a situation like this.

Seton Hall and St. John's have done a nice job of making themselves look embarrassing. However, I agree that this shouldn't all be in the public domain.

I think MJ wants the NBA. As for Hewitt, I think he'd be a good hire, but ATL is ATL. Expectations are modest considering he's not in NC; make the tourney, win a few ACC titles, sweet 16s and an occasional final four. He's done that. Tech is an attractive place, plus COL in GA is much lower in NY. $3.5 stretches a little further. He's said his fam likes ATL. All that said, SJU needs to get him, imo.

Hewitt has turned down the offer, as per ESPN.

I kinda figured he would, but SJU had to take a shot. Where do they go now? Greenberg @ VT has been mentioned. Would they hire a jewish guy @ a catholic school? I don't think they'll get a "big" hire. I'm thinking well respected, very qualified, mid-major, northeastern guy.

" [St. John's] is also in a 16-team league that has guys like Jim Calhoun, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino, Jay Wright, Bob Huggins and Jamie Dixon." And JTIII!

In my most oustider of opions, St Johns has two options:
1) pick up an up and coming coach from a mid major, hope that he strikes the lottery with one or two of the three star recruits he has coming in and thereafter move up the ladder in re-estabilishing itself 2) hire a Calipari/Pitino/Scott Drew clone who has questionable (at best) recruiting tactics and is willing to take chances by greasing the right palms etc..

good points HeartAttack
I am kind of surprised that the Cornell coach isn't getting much mention -- or maybe the guy from Siena. Both of them have been successful in the general area and seemed poised to make a sizely step up in the coaching ranks.

I know an SJU diehard fan at work, so I probably know more about SJU's situation than I should. But the biggest issue facing them is the enormous senior class they need to replace after next season. Because of that, a prime recruiter who can quickly come in and start putting together an outstanding 2011 class is likely a high priority for potential coaching candidates. Clearly, money is not a roadblock, unlike the situation at SHU.
I am interested to see what is next, Greenberg is mentioned often but I am not sure he is a good hire. What has he actually done at Tech, made them competitive? Also, they just invested millions in facilities at the urging of Greenberg to help him recruit. It would be an odd time for him to leave.

From what I've read, one of the influential SJU alumni in the mix is the guy who started Vitamin Water and has made a lot of coin in the beverage industry. 50 Cent? lmao............

Both of them have been successful in the general area and seemed poised to make a sizely step up in the coaching ranks. Siena coach was mentioned frequently and indicated he has no interest the other day. I must admit, that I am not surprised a bit. That was intended entirely as a logical "hat in the ring" suggestion. If it was/will be discussed in the future, then I take no credit or blame. And for the record, it surfaced down here as a part of a general "coaches discussion" given the openings -- both already confirmed as well as readily apparent. I didn't intend any disrespect to anyone involved in either direction. Lastly, and for the little ... or less than little that it is worth ... the talking heads down here think that Mark Jackson, in spite of his lack of college coaching experience, should be the obvious choice. Also, Chris Mullen's name is getting thrown around a bunch. Finally, I don't know much/if even that much about the St. John's program. But IF ... and that's a big if ... but IF they could somehow "find" $3 million a year for Billy D. then I don't think they should have much trouble finding a quality coach. Again, what about going after the guy from Cornell ... or maybe someone like a young protege' from the likes of Bill Self. For that matter, I would think that Tubby Smith's name might be on some lists. Auburn has been going after him vigorously. If I were Tubby, I might willingly use New York and Auburn against each other. Off the record ... anything to get out of friggin Minnesota! I've got two really good friends who have lived there. One is glad to have been redeployed to some country with a "stan" at the end of the name and the other is anxiously awaiting.

Auburn hired the UTEP coach, Barbee yesterday. So, there's no playing St. John's against Auburn for Tubby's services.

Mike Vaccaro via Twitter: Sources tell The Post that BC's Al Skinner has moved into a prominent place on St. John's' wish list.

Skinner would be a great hire for comedic reasons. The return of Dudley's Dad to the BE.
