Awesome, the guy is a bum who is not fit for the Big East. He can take his bush league act to.... well, not sure who would hire him at this point.
Supposedly something bad went down with Robert Mitchell, who got kicked off the team after saying some bad things about Gonzo last week. Reading the SHU board (which has been very entertaining lately, and will only get better now), theyre making it sound really serious, ie, along the lines of attempted murder or something.
That, combined with another transfer driving the wrong way on the turnpike (think he got off the dui charge), another transfer in Pope punching a guy below the belt last night and getting tossed, the bad press in the NYT lately, Gonzo getting his 7th Technical of the year for once again acting like a clown last night, and then getting blown out in the NIT first round at home in front of less than 2K people... it all just kind of came together in a hurry for him.
Hope they get somebody new and respectable, that way I can go back to routing for SHU when they're not playing us, as I did when they had Orr. They may end up battling SJU (and Rutgers?) for the top candidates.

This makes me sad. If only because he was entertaining. But honestly, you can only be that level of jackass if you win. And he didn't.

They were rightfully concerned that the chaos would only get worse (particularly without a strong AD in place), and that he wouldn't win enough to get rid of the stench.
You'll hear names like Fran McCaffrey but he apparently has a great gig at Siena -- half a million a year, full house every night, great standing within the university etc. Not sure SH would offer him enough to make him want to rescue a Big East bottom feeder.
There's also some buzz that Keno Clark may be on his way to Iowa.

Which is the tougher job? DePaul or SHU?

Thamel must be cackling!!! With Broadus and now Gonzo getting fired, perhaps its time to add "Getting Thameled" to the Lexicon. We should suggest that he go after Huggy or Calhoun next...

I am with SF on this. Gonzo is a total clown, but it is a shame to see him go. He's truly a sports entertainer and probably could have a career as Bam Bam Bigelow's long lost ring manager.
I guess I have a few serious questions out of this. Did SHU do any diligence work when they hired him? He recruited daringly at Manhattan, and his graduation rate was not great IIRC.
Next, does SHU have the shortest fuse in the BE? Recall that they fired Louis Orr after making the tournament simply because he was not delivering wins in the tournament. I bet they'd take an Orr-quality hire in a heartbeat right now.
Third, there are serious rumors flying around the SHU board that Stix Mitchell did something serious last night. Those who know aren't talking, but it seems like the full story of the SHU meltdown has not yet come out.

Much more to come out on the Gonzalez story, specifically with respect to the behavior of certain players.
Suffice it to say, he was not fired due to on-court performance.
A disgrace to Seton Hall University and to the Big East---it will be a long time before he winds up on the sideline of a major D1 program again. You have to win like Calipari to get away with running a program the way Gonzalez does.

As a son of a SHU alum and growing up a SHU fan, this firing was coming for a while. His antics on the court are one thing, but the off-court issues and the constant flow of disgruntled transfers into SHU has worried the University for some time.
You know it is bad when a coach can sign a 3 year extension in September, get the team to its first postseason in 4 years and then gets fired in March. I am sure a lot more will come out about this situation. Why did they get rid of Orr? Was being competitive and running a clean program that bad?
Meanwhile, who do you replace this clown with? Obviously it will be an upstanding citizen and I know many local mid-majors up here had very good or series of good seasons - Siena, Stony Brook, Hofstra, just to name a few. Crazy times could be coming to the Big East NYC metro - SJU, RU and SHU may all be on the market for a coach in the next week.

I don't know whether PJ is on good terms with the SHU administration, but it seems like he'd be the best they can do. In the NYC area, I think you really need to have some ties to the local high schools and what not.

I heard PJ for the Oregon job was a possibility (think he is still with the blazers).

There's also talk of PJ going out to Oregon, considering his Blazers ties.

I had posted this over at the Pro & College board before the announcement, but now you've got a situation where as many as four coaching positions for NY-area programs (Seton Hall, St. John's, Rutgers, and Fordham) could all be opening this spring. (and that doesn't count the Knicks or Nets).
The amazing part, according to Jerry Carino at the Star-Ledger: Gonzalez refused to sign an extension offered him earlier this year, which allowed SHU to fire him with little or no buyout.
Seton Hall's got a tough road ahead. If the Big East ever looks to cut down members to accomodate more football schools, DePaul and the Hall have the most exposure.

Didn't we read that Bobby G was trying to get the AD fired? Well, now he's gone. I too hope the Hall gets someone really good.
PJ is still close to the school, but probably not a candidate for the HC job. Dickie V is an Alumnus. With guys like that - and Raftery -- they should at least get the SHU name out there and get some good recommendations for Candidates.
