Gonzo Gone-zo! A little surprising, given that Seton Hall has improved during Gonzo's four years Improved in what way? Both his predecessors went to multiple post-seasons and both won NCAA tournament games. Gonzo hasn't even won an NIT game. Compared to his first lousy year, sure. Compared to the prior decade, Gonzo the Great finishes a distant, crooked 3rd in results AND conduct. Roberts is still officially the coach of SJU, FYI. I'm talking about during his four years there. 2006-07: 13-16, 4-12 Big East 2007-08: 17-15, 7-11 Big East 2008-09: 17-15, 7-11 Big East 2009-10: 19-13, 9-9 Big East, NIT 1st Round Hazell would be a senior, so they'd have another good shot at NCAA's next year. True, he did set the bar pretty low his first year, but I think the recruiting gap was the biggest cause of that, and the reason Orr got canned.

I like the guy from Richmond, Mooney, for SHU. Princeton guy, originally from Philly, so he knows his way around the northeast. Also a pretty likeable guy with no baggage, and pretty young. Plus the most important thing, he's done a pretty good coaching job as the head man at a school that's in a respectable conference. If he'd be willing to take the SHU job (not sure) I think he'd be a real nice pickup. Puff piece on Mooney from Sunday's NYT: www.nytimes.com/2010/03/07/sports/ncaabasketball/07richmond.htmlGetting back to SHU, the ESPN.com article contains an interesting quote from Bobby Hurley: "I had an unusual relationship with Coach Gonzalez," longtime St. Anthony coach Bob Hurley said Wednesday. "There never really was a comfort zone. I thought his focus was always on the New York City players and that didn't include us. I had a comfort zone with Seton Hall, sending many players there in the past, but not recently. Whoever gets the job will personality-wise be different than Coach Gonzalez. I would consider sending our players there."

Yeah reading rutgers and seton hall boards in the past there was always talk of one f the hurley's coming in and taking over. Not sure if that would work out or not, but i wouldn't put it past them to try it.

Same Hurley quote in this article, also. My big takeaway from that article, though? SHU's woman's bball coach was named Mangina? Most unfortunate.

Seems like Danny Hurley is getting the most play right now, he coaches St Benedict's Prep in NJ, and of course, was a former SHU player. That hire would place SHU into the ring for some decent recruits quickly. Will be interesting to see how SHU handles this, clearly if they want to sell tickets and satisfy the fan base, Hurley will be the choice. Remains a significant risk since he does not have college coaching experience.

If I am a SHU fan, I would be looking at Fran McCaffrey up at Siena and the coach at Cornell. Those guys would bring a disciplined approach, and they have a decent track record. Cornell has won the Ivy for three straight years - that's something given the Princeton/Penn rivalry and Tommy Amaker.
Recruiting can fall into place for anyone - it just takes some winning and savvy. A counterexample to the "area guy" argument is Bobby Gonzalez. He has all the ties in the world to the NYC area, but he was only signing dog mess for talent with an exception here or there.

Here's the thing I want to know: "What is Seton Hall looking for?" They have no budget to speak of. They honestly had a pretty good nine years under Amaker and Orr (7 post-seasons, 3 NCAA appearances, 5 seasons .500 or better in the best conference in the nation, a Sweet 16). Then they hire Gonzo and they get a filthy, caffeinated 4 years resulting in 1 NIT appearance and a boatload of baggage. I just don't know what Seton Hall's goals are right now. If it were to be competitive, they were doing that. If it's to be reputable, they were doing that. If it's to be 1989 every year, did they think Gonzo would do that for them? And even if he did, at what cost? Dumb all around. Comparing Gonzo with Amaker/Orr isn't an apples-to-apples comparison because the conference is so much stronger than it was then. The Louisville/Marquette/Cincinnati trio is much better than the BC/Miami/Virginia Tech group was, not to mention that a little Jesuit school in DC has returned to prominence.

The thing about Gonzo is that he lucked into the Seton Hall job. Remember, he was at Manhattan and was up for the St. John's job (that Roberts ended up getting) after the Jarvis fiasco. Interviews for St. John's; goes down to Miami and interviews there (Hamilton had left); tells the Miami AD that he had an offer from St. John's, and they needed to move quickly; the Miami AD contacts St. John's, finds out that Gonzo lied to him, and Gonzo screwed himself out of both situations.
Fast forward a couple of years, Seton Hall decides to cut Orr lose (after not giving him an extension, which jammed his recruiting--not that he was a great recruiter to begin with) and had no one lined up. Gonzo is begging to get out of Manhattan, and the end result is that Gonzo/Seton Hall makes a shotgun marriage look good.
Now, it's 2010, Seton Hall doesn't have an AD and doesn't have a clue what it wants to be. I doubt McCaffrey is interested. Apart from the ND connection (and by the way, his wife has Gonzo's courtside manner--when was the last time you heard a coach's wife getting ejected like Mrs. McC was at a bracket buster game against Hofstra couple of years back), he's a Philly guy; has a good thing going at Siena, in a town where Siena doesn't have to compete for coverage; and I'm sure Siena people will remind him that Orr left Siena for Seton Hall.
In a rational world, the next coach at Seton Hall gets a huge honeymoon because of the train wreck left behind, but Big East school fans aren't rational. Rutgers has been to four ncaa tourneys since the Phil Sellers led team went undefeated before getting knocked off in the Final Four and losing the consolation game. That's 4 tourneys in 35 years (one at large bid I think), yet the media in NY/NJ acts like the turn around is just around the corner.

Didn't the university let the players in? They are acting like they are not to blame at all and that is laughable. Bring in Andrew Gaze and open up the Aussie connect. Go HOYAS!!!
This makes the Esherick years seem dreamy!

Andrew Gaze did not achieve even one credit at Seton Hall.

Andrew Gaze did not achieve even one credit at Seton Hall. Are you suggesting that PJ imported a mid-twenties, professional, lights-out shooter for one season and didn't make him go to class?

www.nytimes.com/2010/03/18/sports/ncaabasketball/18gonzalez.html?ref=sportsA Pirates player, Robert Mitchell, was arrested in Newark on Tuesday and charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary and possession of a weapon, according to a law enforcement official in Essex County. Mitchell was accused along with another person of breaking into a home in South Orange, duct-taping eight people and stealing cash and personal items. The police have not identified the other person. I guess that's why they call them the Pirates.
